|DENISON FAMILY TREE at WORLDCONNECT|
Denison oral history has it that the Denisons came to America around 1740 and that they were Scots Irish. Although this has yet to be proven, the then frontier area of Virginia where they settled, was indeed settled by Scots Irish. Also, the families historically linked to the Denisons, such as the Given and McClung families have had their roots traced back to Northern Ireland (the Given family is from Antrim County, Ireland and the McClungs from Ulster and Antrim, Ireland ). Each of these families immigrated around 1738 and 1740, respectively. The Henderson family originated in Fifeshire, Scotland (County Fife) and also immigrated to America about 1740. Mr. Haskins Coleman, the husband of the great-great-great-great granddaughter of John Henderson says of the Hendersons, "John Henderson was most certainly the son of an Ulster Scot . . .". (See HENDERSON FARM and ULSTER SCOTS for more information.) The Denisons and all of these families were, in all likelihood, Ulster Scots.
Unfortunately, solid Denison genealogy does not begin in Ireland, but with James A. Denison, born 1829 in Augusta County, VA and nothing much is really known about James other than he married Jane Given in 1854, lived in Nicholas County, WV and had a son named John Elliott before he died of consumption around 1858. It is this son that gives the Denison genealogy serious focus. He is pictured above with is wife and one of his sons.
Like the Denison ancestors before him, Elliott’s life, genealogically, was not much more than a silhouette when the Denison genealogical research began. One of Elliott’s granddaughters, Gennivee Shelton Dennison Carey wrote in the mid 1990's, “ . . . no one seems to know too much about Elliott’s past.”
" . . . (He) was raised by cousins “Givens" of Raphine, VA. He went by the name of Elliott. His mother was buried at Mossy Creek Church Cemetery. A search was made for her grave but never found. Elliott’s father was James Denison. This is the extent known about Elliott, no mention has ever been made as to brothers, sisters, etc.”
As a result of dedicated genealogical research, Elliott's life and those lives surrounding him have begun to emerge and their stories are fascinating. The search has been an adventure and a privilege. Please enjoy the Denison website.
