"I have a chart that was sent from England, that has a secondary relative of
mine (Harriet Lawrence Smith) had married "Ephraim USHER, Brewer of Trowbridge
in the county of Wilts." My grandmother had once mentioned he was from the
"House of Usher".

One of our predecessors were brewers from Wiltshire. Some years ago, my fathers
cousin gave me a copy of her grandfathers Marriage certificate.
He was Aaron USHER, Brewer and married Elizabeth Harris, a publicans daughter. Quite possibly the Bull Inn, I did see a postcard of it but too many years ago. It also states his father, Charles, also a Brewer, lives in Back Street, Trowbridge, Wilts.
The address on the certificate is Back Street, Trowbridge. I have been there some years ago and the brewery is still there. Ushers' Ales. Started by Thomas USHER in 1824, on the hundredth anniversary in 1924 the then President (grandson of the first owner, Thomas) gave a speech of which I have a copy.
Though Thomas had 8 sons, there is no Charles!!
Possibly he changed his name or maybe a nephew but I've not seen any reference
to other family members, I find it hard to believe that there could be two sets
of brewing Ushers both living in Back Street Trowbridge who are not related...

Information and descendents of Greenwood USHER of Trowbridge, Wiltshire. This information has been gathered by Kerry Edwards. The family emigrated to Australia somewhere between 1850 & 1852.
I am currently researching my family tree of the usher brewery and am desperate to know what happened to 2 of Thomas and Hannah sons, they are Jebez and Samuel, their births dates are 17/71824 and 21/5/1826. I am unable to trace them via census etc.

My family originated with Thomas USHER (1717-1783) and Jane BIGWOOD of Westbury,
Wiltshire, England. At least two of their descendants eventually emigrated to
South Africa. One of these, James, was an 1820 Settler. My ancestor, James'
nephew, George USHER, came to South Africa with his wife Caroline GAISFORD about
1849-50.

I finally made it to Wiltshire Record Office today and was able to look at the
Westbury Vestry Minutes (WRO 548/2) They nearly didn't let me as the book is so
fragile, but as I had travelled from Cardiff and had the exact date they
literally gave me kid gloves and let me have it open at the correct page. List
of those paid by parish of Westbury to travel to Cape of Good Hope, dated 25
October 1819:
