We are looking for info on the marriage in Co. Durham of John Anthony USHER
and Barbara DAWSON about mid 1880s. Our g-father was their first son Robert b.
12 MAY1884. John came to U.S. alone to prepare a home. She sailed for the U.S.
when the baby was about 18 months old. Family was and remains in coal mining
both in England and U.S. We have lost track or relatives in England. Would like
to re-establish same.

Jane USHER married Bartholomew LUMLEY on 12 Nov 1674 at Corbridge, Nbl.
Her children were named Ralph, Jane, John, Bartholomew.
There are lots of Ushers subsequently bpt or married in Corbridge, but the only
clue to where Jane came from is "Broomhaugh", given as her place of residence.
This is in the parish of Bywell St Andrew, but I can't find any Jane USHER there
& no USHER bpt earlier than 1669. (unnamed male, son of John). She is only the
2nd USHER mentioned in the Corbridge PR.
My grandfather William USHER was born in Newcastle in 1916. His first marriage was to Dorothy WILSON in York. They had two sons Michael and Peter. His parents were William and Anna. They had two other sons Fredrick and Arthur, I think they moved to Cumbria with their mother. Anna died in Penrith possibly in 1974. I don't really have enough information to get certificates, I am hoping someone might recognise the family.
A small Northumbrian twig of the Usher family still lives in Newcastle.
Descended from Thomas USHER and Margaret, a hatter from Carlisle, his son Thomas moved to Northumberland and as a Tailor and Innkeeper became sufficiently wealthy to own a street of houses. Thomas married Mary Ann SWINBURN in Newcastle in 1855. They ran a pub, the Black Bull in North Shields, then moved to Cowpen, near Blyth. They had 4 children, the youngest, my great grandfather predeceased him, and the trouble caused by the wills of Thomas, Matthew, and Matthew's wife split the family up until the present day. Matthew married Sarah Robinson and had 3 sons, Matthew Swinburn, William Robinson and Thomas. Matthew S was a railwayman, as a fireman he went on the Flying Scotsman from Newcastle to London. Married to Sarah CULLUM, he had 2 children, one also called Matthew Swinburn USHER. By time I came along, all the money from Thomas's property in Blyth had been dissipated between various members of the Usher family, Matthew USHER's wife's children from her second husband and last, but not least, the lawyers

James Williams [we think he was named for the place, as the other siblings don't have second names] was trained as a game keeper and estate manager, and amongst other things, skated down the North Tyne one very cold winter, and worked for the Duke of Northumberland at Keilder [before it was a lake] and met George V many times at shooting parties, where he was in charge. He married my Great Aunt Mary Ann Hillary, who worked as housekeeper at Scar House, Arkengarthdale for many years, before going to live at Malham Tarn, near Settle, in Yorkshire.
Mary Ann died in 1950 and six months later he died 1951. Both buried in Kirby Malham churchyard, very simple stone, wrongly ascribed, in his case, to James William Usher - they'd missed the 's' out and I remember my mother being very upset about it. James and Mary Ann had no children, but due to her sister's illness at the time of my mother's birth [she was a twin], they both agreed to rear my mother. Another aunt was involved in this process, Sarah Hillary, but she never married, her fiance being killed in the Great War. There is, in Malham Tarn Estate, a cottage known as Miss Hillary's cottage, she was living there when the Estate passed from the Colemans [of mustard fame] to the National Trust and became a Field Centre. She died in 1957.
In 1861 the family George Usher & Ann Pearson were living at Briarwood,
Ridley, then 1871 at Castle Cottage, Willimoteswick [known locally as
Williamswick]. In 1881 still at Williamswick Cottage. with wife, Robert 11 Ralph
9 James W 6. and 1891 at Allensgreen Cottage, Ridley with Annie 36, son Ralph
19, & Gson Thomas 16.
