"The
Moon" is a newspaper that was first released 125 years ago this week, and to
celebrate this anniversary I have decided to digitise the originals and place
them on the web site for the whole family - indeed the whole world to enjoy.
The newspaper was made by many of the younger children of
Thomas Usher, brewer in Edinburgh and some of their cousins during the
holidays as a way to keep them occupied, amongst them
Eliza
Mary Usher (age 21),
Helen
Madeline Usher (age 17),
Thomas
Leslie Usher (age 16),
Annie
Millard Usher (age 14 and who died 2 years later),
Charles Howard Usher (age 13) and others who I have not yet been able to
work out.
There are a total of 6 issues, in the first issue there were some flaps of paper stuck over some of the articles which were to be lifted. I have included them in the scans at the side of the article over which they were originally. At the end of issue 6 are also some comments about how "The Moon" came about.
It makes for most interesting reading and shows how talented many of the youngsters were.
The images are quite large, about 250kb each so will take a few minutes to load unless you have a broadband connection. If you have any difficulty reading the images, any comments about the places or stories, or even a review then please let me know, and I will post them here. My thanks to John Usher, Courthill for the loan of these periodicals to be digitised.
