3 "10th Duke of Grafton, farmer," (London) The Daily Telegraph, Friday 13 November 1970;
The 10th Duke of Grafton, who has died, aged 78, was an experienced and capable farmer who frequently advocated England's self-sufficiency in the matter of food.

A descendent of Charles II, Charles Alfred Euston FitzRoy, Earl of Euston, Viscount of Ipswitch, succeeded in 1936 his cousin, who died as the result of a crash in the Limerick International Grand Prix car race.

In the early 50s he divided his time between Euston Hall, his place in Norfolk, and his cattle ranch in Southern Rhodesia.

This ranch he had maintained for his youngest son, Lord Michael FitzRoy, who was reported missing, believed drowned, off the Solomon Islands in July, 1954.

Eventually the Duke sold the 23,780 acre estate, at Enkeldoorn, near Salisbury, for £58,240.

Water-colour skill

The Duke, an expert water-colourist, and his son, the Earl of Euston, who is also an artist, both showed their work at the summer exhibition of the Bury St Edmunds Art Society in 1967. The Duke was then 75. Among his Old Masters which he exhibited in Norwich, he owned Van Dyck's portrait of Henrietta Maria.

In 1950, "owing to the high cost of maintainence" he ordered the demolition of about two-thirds of Euston Hall.

Educated at Wellington and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, he joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers at Quetta in 1911 and also saw service in France in 1914. Later he became ADC and Comptroller to Earl Buxton, Govenor-General of South Africa, from 1917 until 1920. He retired from the Army in 1921, to farm at Coney Weston, Suffolk, from 1921 to 1927.

The Duke was married three times. By Lady Doreen Maria Josepha Sydney Buxton, daughter of the first Earl Buxton, he had a son and a daughter, in addition to a son who was killed in action in 1944. She died in 1923. He married in 1924 Lucy Eleanor, daughter of Sir George Stapylton Barnes, and had two sons, one of whom died. His second wife died in 1943.

In 1944 he married Mrs Rita Currie, daughter of Mr J. S. Carr-Ellison. She died last August.

The heir is his son, the Earl of Euston, who is 51. He is chairman of the Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings.

ASSETS WORTH £3M
Estate kept intact

OUR ESTATES CORRESPONDENT writes: The late Duke of Grafton once owned land and other assets worth more that £3 million. He transferred his property to his heir, the Earl of Euston, at least 10 years ago, which means that it is exempt from estate duty.

The family property comprises an 11,000-acre estate in East Anglia, which must be worth well over £1 million, as well as Euston Hall and an art collection. The new Duke is a leading member of the National Trust in East Anglia and chairman of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings.

He co-operated with his father under the available tax arrangements to safeguard the estate, and so prevented the break up of about 12 well-run tenanted farms. The late Duke maintained a famous herd of polled Herefords in the 2,300 acres the family has in hand.
