The Usshers of Gerardstown

TreeThis has now been amalgamated into the general Ireland tree.

NEWCOMEN.DOC. This is a document from Hugh CASEMENT detailing the NEWCOMEN family. It is interesting as two USSHERs, a brother and sister both married issue if Sir Robert NEWCOMEN. It is in MS Word format 97/2000. If you need another format then email me.

From Joan Ussher Sharkey

Just some snippets about the family which might interest you.

William Arland USSHER died 20 August 1928 [not 1927 as in Burkes]. Source:- Will Book, 1928. National Archives, Bishop St. Dublin. Residence at death was Gerrardstown House, Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, occupation - farmer. Bequeath all his assets to brother Harry Ingham USSHER, of Brackenstown House, Swords, Co. Dublin.

As you can see, he didn't leave anything to his daughter, Kathleen. His wife Mary USSHER nee CAULFIELD, died 8 August 1921 at Tobberclair, Athlone, Co. Westmeath. [Source - death certificate]. He ignored her also - there was a big court case about the marriage, reported in newspapers, which I need to research more.

Will Book 1957. National Archives. Harry Ingham USSHER, of Brackenstown House, Swords, Co. Dublin, died 30 July 1957 and left his estate to his niece Kathleen BROWNE.

From talking to neighbours and friends at funeral, Harry never owned Brackenstown House and when he died, he secured a life tenancy for his niece Kathleen in the gate lodge of Brackenstown. Kathleen had been living with her uncle Harry since the break-up of her second marriage. Each owner of Brackenstown House had inherited Kathleen in the gate lodge, present owners are the CAMPBELL family, who organised her funeral.

new From Adele Burkitt

Thomas USSHER, (consul. gen. of Haiti) had a second marriage to Catherine COATES...who was the daughter of Admiral? COATES. They immigrated to Australia and had two children, Arthur Neville BURKITT, b.1891 (my husbands grandfather) and Dora Catherine b.1905

Obituary

From Joan Ussher Sharkey

Hon. Kathleen BROWNE [nee USSHER] occured on April 10th 2000, aged 89, at Blanchardstown Hospital, Dublin and she was buried in Rolestown Cemetery, Swords, Co. Dublin. Kathleen BROWNE was the niece of Henry [Harry] USSHER, and had been living since Harry's death in 1957, in the Gate Lodge of Brackenstown House.
Death notice appeared in Irish Times, on 11th and 12th April 2000.

Kathleen was born 15th January 1911, only child of William Arnold USSHER, Eastwell, Co. Galway, and Mary CAULFIELD. [I have a copy of her birth cert.] Kathleen married [1] Capt. Joseph FITZGERALD, MC Royal Ulster Rifles [he was killed in WW2 - haven't got exact date] and then married [2] 1946, Hon. Geoffrey BROWNE, younger son of 3rd Baron Oranmore and Browne, and divorced 1958. She had no children. Details of her marriages are in Burkes Irish Family Records. Her father William Arland and then brother Harry Ingham were the last of the Usshers of Eastwell House, Co. Galway.

There are some very interesting aspects of Kathleen's life and of her parents, which I must get down to writing about soon - needs some further research.
