The life of Isaac Newton Erwin

Isaac Newton Erwin was born in East Tennessee (McMinn Co. we believe) on 03/17/1817. His parents are unknown but possibly, James Erwin of McMinn County. Isaac Married Phoebe R. Trim on 09/05/1839 in McMinn County. Phoebe was the daughter of Anderson Trim of McMinn County. Soon after they were married, they moved to nearby Monroe County and lived next door to Phoebe's uncle, Carter Trim. It was here, their first child, Abigail A. Erwin was born on August 24, 1840. In 1842, Isaac and Phoebe moved across the Tennessee River to Rhea County where Phoebe's father had recently moved. They lived near the town of Washington, Tenn. which was located on the banks of the Tennessee River.

While living in Washington, their second child, Martha E. Erwin was born in 1845.

According to Rhea Co. Court Minutes, Isaac and Phoebe's father, Anderson Trim, were elected to a "Jury of View" (Survey Crew) to lay out a road from Washington to the river. In those days. local citizens were appointed to build and care for roads in the county.

About 1848, Isaac and Phoebe heard from relatives in Texas about new land so they packed up their family and joined a wagon train heading West. They eventually settled in Panola County, Texas near the Louisiana Line in 1849. Isaac and Phoebe lived here for ar least 10 years and this is where they became parents of 5 more children: James K. Erwin, Isaac A. Erwin, Parr Onslo Erwin, Joseph H. Erwin and one girl who died when they moved to Arkansas. No record of Isaac and his family has been found between 1860 and 1868. The Panola County records show they last paid taxes in 1859 and the next record we have is of their purchase of land in Bradley County, Arkansas in 1869.

Isaac filed for a Homestead in Bradley Co., Arkansas in 1870 near the Calhoun Co. Line and in the papers, it shows that the land was sold to Isaac and William N. Erwin who may have been his brother or cousin. No record has been found after that time on William N. Erwin. Isaac and William bought 82.6 acres for $9.12 and had to remain on the land for seven years before receiving title to the land.

Isaac was a Farmer and also had a keen interest in music and taught voice lessons. Isaac died on 05/11/1883 and Phoebe died 11/24/1898 and both are buried in McFarland Cemetery in Bradley Co., Arkansas.

The life of Isaac Anderson Erwin

Isaac Anderson Erwin, (named after his mother's father, Anderson Trim) was born in Panola County, Texas in 1851. Isaac Married Nancy Jane Drury on 08/19/1875 in Bradley County, Arkansas. Isaac filed for a Homestead on 80 acres of land near his father's place in December of 1891 and was given title to the land seven years later for the sum of Seven Dollars. There was already a small house on this land and he and his family moved into the house after fixing it up. The house had only 2 rooms, one was the kitchen and dinning room and the other was the bedroom for him, his wife, and 8 children. Isaac lost his sight later in life but continued to farm and raise his family and was even able to write with a little assistance. A document was found in the Bradley County Court House in which Isaac gave the Right of Way to Little Rock, Miss. River & Texas R.R. to cross his land for the sum of One Dollar.
