Grandma Nancy Jane Drury's parents were from Native American ancestry; and in fact her father was full blooded Indian and her mother was one-half Indian. It was very hard to find any information on her father, James Drury, since most of the people of Indian Blood had been so mistreated and were sent west to Oklahoma & those who managed to stay hidden and remain behind, kept a low profile and were not found in local records.
We were able to find James Drury in the 1856 Bradley County Tax list and the
Hempstead County marriage records: James M. Drury to Nancy Morgan each about 40
yrs of age; 10/15/1851 by Hugh White, JP.
Grandma Nancy Jane's mother was Nancy M. Drury, born on April 9, 1811. Nancy M. was first married to
James Morgan. Their children are listed above.
The Civil War
Although we did not have any Erwin Ancestors in the Civil War, we did find that Nancy Drury's half brothers were in the War. They had some very interesting experiences during the war that will be included in the pages to follow. We noticed that Pleasant D. Morgan and his brother McDaniel Morgan were in Hardy's Regiment
in Arkansas and after the war, we were never able to find what happened to Pleasant D. Morgan as we could not find him in any more census records after 1860.
(ooops - oh yeah we did find him in Union Parrish, La.)
Finding Nancy Jane Drury and P.D. Morgan
I had remembered my father, Jessie, going to Louisiana to visit Hosea McAdams who was Elizabeth McAdams' son and Jessie's first cousin. We looked in the National Telephone Directory on the Internet and looked for people in Northern Louisiana named McAdams. We found one in Monroe, Louisiana who gave us the name of a lady named Fay
Dyson in Farmerville, Louisiana (near El Dorado) who was a descendant of Elizabeth (Drury) McAdams. I called her on the telephone and received an invitation to come down for a visit. We did so and met 2 other McAdams relations of which one was the daughter of Hosea McAdams. They brought old photos in which we found a photo of Grandma Nancy Jane. They took us to the nearby Canaan Cemetery and found Pleasant D. Morgan who was the son of William Morgan buried there, which told us where his father P.D. Morgan disappeared to after the Civil War, and also found Elizabeth Drury's marker.
On our next trip to the State Archives, we looked in Union Parish, La. census records and found Nancy Jane
Drury enumerated with one Pleasant D. Morgan in 1870 where Nancy was shown as 18 years of age. Our thanks go out to Fay
Dyson and Betty Taylor (both descendants of Elizabeth Drury) for their help and kindness.
James Drury was found on Tennessee Reservation Roll #13-208 from this Treaty of 1817, listing him with "Persons wishing Reservations in Arkansas." The date was February 24, 1818 and he was listed with another person (possibly a wife), living in the "Battle Creek" area of
Eastern Tennessee. The other Cherokees in this band were later moved to Oklahoma in 1828 or at least, most of them. Sometime before 1828, James Drury made his way to Bradley County, Arkansas but nothing is known of the fate of the other person who had moved to Arkansas with him. He is found on Bradley County Tax rolls in 1856 and since he is absent from the 1860 Census, we know he died before 1860 and after 1857 (Elizabeth Drury was born in 1857). We know that James died while digging a Well, which caved in on him.
The location of the Well is in Bradley County across the road from the Wagnon
Methodist Church. The property is grown up in weeds and bushes now.
Most Native Americans got their American names from white and foreign settlers many years ago and many of the Keetoowah Cherokees got their names from French settlers and it was found that Drury was a French surname.
