*page 4:
"Samuel Alonzo Allen was born 13 Jan 1865,
in Parowan, Iron, Utah. Thisbe Hanks was born 28 Mar 1872 in Salt
Lake City, Utah. Samuel and Thisbe Hanks were
married 27 Oct 1892 in the Manti Temple, Manti, Sanpete,
Utah. They came to Grover to live. They had ten
children. Samuel having come from Escalante bought a farm on Carcass
Creek, so called because of the dead bodies of sheep and cattle found on it.
(The creek is narrow and steep and an animal slipping into it can hardly ever
get out.) The town is now called Grover, Utah. Here Samuel built a
three room house, this was the year of 1884. When their third child was
born Sam. Samuel was called to fill a mission in the Southern
States. He left for the mission October 2, 1896. Thisbe kept the
post office and boarded (rented a room) to the school teacher and also rented
out the farm, and this way she was able to keep Sam on his mission and support
the family. Sam returned from his mission October 2, 1898 exactly two
years to the day.
In 1900 Sam traded their place at Grover for a farm and orchard in
Caineville, Utah. Thisbe took over the post office soon after moving to
Caineville, this helped to keep their fast growing family, there wasn't much
sale for fresh fruit at the time, so they dried and sold it. In 1903 Sam
traded for a ranch two and a half miles from Teasdale, Utah. Thisbe stayed
in Caineville while Sam worked the farm in Teasdale, Thisbe stayed in Caineville
until 1906, then moved to the ranch in Teasdale, and this is where Paul Knowlton
"Doc" Allen was born on April 17, 1908. (Teasdale is at the junction of
Bullberry Creek and the Fremont River. The settlement was originally
established in 1879 and was named for George Teasdale, a Mormon church apostle
and pioneer.)
During this time Sam had been sustained into the bishopric as first
counselor to Bishop William Heaps. Sam and Thisbe had seven sons and four
daughters and are both buried in the Lyman Cemetery."
memories of Doc *page 13: "In 1909 they moved to Lyman, Utah,
about 15 miles north of the northern part of the county. Samuel bought a
nice little 30 acre farm. He raised hay and grain and lots of potatoes, he
kept a small herd of cows which furnished us plenty of beef. We had lots
of butter and cheese. He also kept a few pigs. When fall came, they
were busy gathering the crop, killing pigs and smoking the meat in the smoke
house."
memories of Doc *page 15:
"When Thisbe became ill, Samuel mortgaged the farm to pay the bills.
Their son Doc was the only one working so he paid the premium which was $33.00
every three months. Doc got a job working for Frank Neff on the Horse
Valley Ranch four miles from Lyman, Utah. The other brothers would stay
away from home. Sam the oldest was married, Rube the next was off chasing
around. Pete had gone to live with the Harvey Mangum family in
Bicknell. Doc was 16 years old (1924) when his mother died, she had been
ill for some time. Doc was at the ranch and they didn't even send him
word."
memories of Doc *page 42: written by Doc's
wife...
"Doc's dad had stayed with us for a while, I sort of got
acquainted with him after the years I had been in the family. He never
seemed to like me, the idea that Doc had married me, because it seemed I had
taken their financier away. When Doc left, Grandpa (Sam) went to Amy's to
stay, then on November 30, 1935 he died of a heart attack. He had been
outside, he came in and Amy said he seemed short of breath, he sat down on the
couch and leaned over, she checked him and he was dead. She went for me, I
was the first to get there. She was alone with her children. Doc
came home for the funeral, then after Christmas went back with the sheep
herd."
Samuel died, 26 Nov 1935, in Bicknell, Wayne, UT. source used: *"A Legacy of Allens take their Action" compiled by Lyle Royce Allen and Debra Allen Young (Royce is a son of Paul (Doc) Knowlton Allen). |
