There is a Pat Rust who is the granddaughter of Sidney Alvarus Hanks-brother to Ephraim, that I have been working with that lives in Nauvoo. She has done a lot of field work for us. She has been digging through the Hanks histories and deeds in Nauvoo and Madison. I heard a lecture of Knowlton Hanks last September when I was visiting Samoa. That information sent me on a scanvenger hunt and we are now learning more about the conversion of the Hanks family with the added help of Barbara Shannon. Barbara has no ties to Eph other than our two lines trace back to a common Hanks grandfather. She loves Eph anyway. This conversion story converges with other family members that joined the church during that time period, the Knowltons & Eldredges. Did you know that Martha Jane Knowlton Coray was 1st cousin to Ephraim Hanks. She was the scribe to Mother Lucy Smith and her husband Howard Coray was personal secretary to Joseph Smith. John S. Eldredge baptized Ephraim in Nauvoo and is 2nd cousin to Ephraim Hanks. Eldredge became a general authority. And the Sidney Algeron Knowlton, brother to Mother Martha Knowlton Hanks-he and his family moved to Nauvoo. They contracted land between 1836 and 1846. In 1839 was when the Saints were starting to move to Nauvoo. Originally, in 1839, there was only about 100 Mormons but by 1846 there was 20,000. Sidney Algernon Hanks family joined the church in 1840. Information contributed Wed Apr 26 22:00:11 2006, by Sherry Smith. Ephraim, Sidney and Knowlton Hanks probably had more than one familial influence or thread in their conversions to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Sidney Algernon Knowlton family joined the church in 1840. They had been deeding land in Illinois from 1836 to 1846. In 1839 there were only 100 Mormons and by 1845-46 the population reached upwards 20,000.
Sidney Algernon Knowlton is an uncle to Knowlton Hanks, Sidney Alvarus Hanks & Ephraim Knowlton Hanks. Sidney Algernon Hanks is the brother Eph’s mother, Martha Knowlton Hanks. Sidney Algernon Knowlton’s daughter. Martha Jane Knowlton, was first cousin to the Hanks boys. Martha Jane Knowlton became Lucy Mack Smith's scribe. Martha Jane’s husband, Howard Coray became Joseph Smith's personal secretary.
