Baker:
Great great great grandmother, Cassandra Baker (1795-1852), was wife of James S McIlroy. The Bakers are a well documented colonial family of Maryland that moved across PA to OH in the early 1800’s. Shortly before the revolutionary war, Cassandra’s father, Zachariah Baker married Susanna Washburn in West Virginia. About 50 miles west of Pittsburgh, PA, in Harrison Co., OH, the Bakers encountered the McIlroys. There James S married Cassandra and their son, Zachariah, was born. There have been many namesakes for Cassandra and her father. Zachariah was the source the "Zachariah’s" in our line. Some of the Bakers moved on to Carroll Co., OH, just north of Harrison Co., others moved west to the Union county area. The Baker line traces back through the Washburn’s to John Howland, Jane Tilley and Francis Cooke, all passengers on the Mayflower. Therefore descendants of Cassie Baker McIlroy may be Mayflower descendants.
Much of the early Baker history was from the schluck database on Rootsweb.com and from Christine Baker.
Heminger:
Great great grandmother, Catharine Heminger (1821-1901), was wife of the first Zachariah McIlroy, eldest son of James S McIlroy.
The Hemingers came from Neckartenzlingen, Wuerttemberg, Germany. The question is which group is ours. The line is well defined back to George Heminger, Sr., born about 1757, probably in Neckartenzlingen. Nancy McIlroy, a sister of the Zachariah, married Andrew P Heminger, a cousin of Catharine, so we have two links to the Heminger’s. They also had a family name spelling controversy, Heminger vs. Hemminger.
Al Heminger of Livonia, MI and Marjorie Waidner of Morrow, OH, have provided much of the data on the Heminger family.
Hubbard – Rowley:
Great grandmother, Emmaline Hubbard (1824-1923), was the wife of John Marion McIlroy.
Emmaline’s great grandmother was Thankful Rowley (1753-1796).
Thankful’s grandmother was Elizabeth Fuller (1693~1766).
Elizabeth’s great grandfather was Samuel Fuller, whose father was Edward, 21st signer of the Mayflower pact. Therefore, the descendants of Emmaline are "Mayflower" descendants.
The Hubbards and Rowley’s were populous families among the New England founders (those arriving before 1640). The Hubbard’s and Rowleys of New England are well documented and make a lively read. (Little Lizzie Hubbard was one of the "afflicted" children in the Salem witch trials and the wife of firebrand preacher, Cotton Mather, was a Hubbard, as was Alexander Graham Bell’s wife. None of these were in our direct lineage. The Hubbard’s and Rowley’s are noted in the Savage "Dictionary of New England Founders".
Two daughters of Joseph Hubbard and a sister of his wife, Thankful, married founding members of the Licking Land Company. The company was formed in Granville, MA and brought many folks from VT and CT to Granville, Licking Co., OH in the very early 1800’s. The Hubbard name was brought to the county by Gustavus Adolphus Hubbard in 1819, the son of Joseph, when he joined his sisters. He brought his wife, Elizabeth, and son, Joseph Rowley Hubbard. Joseph Rowley was the father of Emmaline. Three daughters of Joseph R Hubbard married three descendants of James S McIlroy.
A primary source for data on "our" early Hubbards (down to Thankful’s husband, Joseph) was the book, "One Thousand Years of Hubbard History, 866 to 1895". Additional information came from "Weathersfield Century One" published bt the Weathersfield, VT Historical Society. Tom Sinton furnish data on the later years of Joseph Hubbard. Amy Baker was instrumental in finding the final resting place of Adolphus Hubbard
Richards:
Grandmother, Mayme Alice Richards, was the wife of Zachariah Hubbard McIlroy, grandson of the first Zachariah McIlroy. She was the daughter of Joseph L Richards and Jennie Austin. So far, the Richards line goes only to Mayme’s great grandfather, Elias, and requires more work to track his origins. Her maternal Austin and Haines trees are documented back to England
Alice Joan (Jody) Rittenhouse Streng recalled visits with her great aunt, Hazel Grubbs in Logan County, OH. Through Hazel & her husband, E Glen Grubbs on the 1900 census, we made contact with their descendant, Gary Jackson. Much of the data on the Richards and Austin family lines came from Gary.
