James was born on 21 June 1882 in Winston county, Mississippi. He was the son of Fletcher Anderson Savage and Margaret Ann Chandler. He married Lucy Unger in West Point, Clay county, Mississippi, on 14 December 1924. Recorded on page 394 of book 23 in Circuit Court of Clay County, Mississippi. James died on 2 June 1954 in West Point, Clay county, Mississippi, at age 71. His body was interred in West Point, Clay county, Mississippi. Daddy is buried in Section F-2 lot 33.
Daddy's daddy (Fletcher Anderson) was a diabetic. He developed gangreen in his right foot and it caused his death. The final six months before he died he was unable to work at his job of railroad right-of-way section foreman. Daddy worked his crew until granddaddy died. When granddaddy died Mr. Taylor (grandaddy's supervisor) gave the job to daddy permanently. Daddy worked for the railroad a total of 50 years. Sucessively it was called the Mobile and Ohio; Gulf, Mobile and Ohio; & finally the Illnois Central. Daddy started his railroad career in January 1904 with the Mobile & Ohio Railroad as a Bridge gang laborer, in Sept 1904, he became a Car Inspector's helper for the Illinois Central System Aberdeen district (Miss.). Oct 1905 he became a Maintanance Section foreman in the Aberdeen district. April 1906 he became a Flagman..the next record shows he returned to the Mobile & Ohio as a Switchman in Nov 1908 in the Artesia (Miss) district. December 1909 he became a Car Inspector for the Artesia district..Nov 1911 he became a roadway Section foreman at Sessums, Miss..then West Point in Jan 1924..then Starkville Dec 1931..back to West Point June 1937..
The year I was born daddy had double pneumonia, the infection was so bad and daddy was so weak the doctor was afraid to put him to sleep with ether (all they had then) for fear it would kill him, so with the aid of a pint of whiskey (my daddy didn't drink) the doctor removed half of four ribs and with his hand collpsed and drained one of his lungs. Daddy was out of work for six months. Mother said she could not get anyone, the grocer (Tom Chandler) or the others to tell her how much her account was. They said if Jim gets well he will pay and if he does not you can't. This is an example of the kind of reputation my dad had. He always told me "we are poor people and a poor man only has his reputation".
