After the death of his father, James, Samuel Fields was taken in by
relatives named Johnston, who raised him to adulthood. The Johnston
family moved to Lawrence County in western Pennsylvania and bought
property, which later became known as the "Fields Homestead." It was
located about three miles northwest of Enon Valley on the P.F.W.& C.
Railroad.
All traces of the Johnston family have since been lost. Samuel Fields
was an only child and was a member of the Presbyterian church.
