It is speculated that all Swaims in America descended from Matthys
Barents Swaim, not from the Lanen/Van Pelt family. However, these two
family groups may have common ancestry in the Netherlands.
Jack Stuart Swaim makes a compelling case for this descendancy issue
in his book "The Swaim Family of Indiana and Oklahoma."

Recent DNA test results on Swaim descendants seem to verify that the
Swaim line in New York descended from Matthys Barents Swaim, and not
a Van Pelt.

Matthys Barents emigrated to the New Amsterdam colony aboard the ship
St. Jan Baptiste in May, 1661. Accompanying him were his second wife
Scytie Cornelise and children Barent, Belitje and Anthony.
He and his family were some of the first European colonists on Staten
Island, New Amsterdam (renamed New York when the British assumed
authority). Staten Island was deeded from the Native Americans to the
Governor of New York in 1670.
In some records, Matthys Swaim was called Thys Barents van Leerdam, a
nominal reference to his ancestral home in the Netherlands. Thys is a
nickname for Matthys, which is Matthias or Matthew in English.
Some researchers have determined that the surname Swaim translates
from Dutch as "dweller at the sign of the swan." In other accounts,
it was an acronymn or slogan representing Dutch protests over the
colonial takeover by the British. Supposedly, it stood for "Sworn to
Withhold Allegiance from the Invading Monarch."
Most likely, the protest story is just a family legend, and the name
Swaim was used by these Dutch ancestors only because a surname was a
legal requirement in the British colonial census.
The original Dutch spelling of the name Swaim was probably "Sweem."
