Aubrey Swaim and his brother Parvin were observers of the test flight
of the Ezekiel Airship in 1902, one year before the Wright Brothers'
famous flight. The ship is claimed to have stayed aloft for 160 feet
before the pilot turned off the engine to land.
The Ezekiel Airship was one of many inventions of the Reverend
Burrell Cannon of Pittsburg, Camp County, Texas. A skilled engineer
and Baptist preacher, Cannon based his design on descriptions of a
flying machine in the Bible's Book of Ezekiel. Over $25,000 was paid
by investors to the Ezekiel Airship Company to begin production.
The prototype Ezekiel Airship was destroyed during a rail transit
accident, en route to the 1902 World's Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. A
second prototype was built, but crashed during a test flight. No
other airships were built after that, and Rev. Cannon entered the
sawmill business.
A Texas state historical marker in Pittsburg denotes the site of the
original Airship flight.
