Brooklyn Male and Female Academy

(No. 240, 1851-52, page 378-79, Acts of Alabama)
An Act "To incorporate the Brooklyn Male and Female Academy, and for other purposes:
Section 1, Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Alabama in General Assembly convened, that Caleb Johnston, George W. Turk, Asa Johnston, C.W.Snowden, Samuel Feagin, Elijah Mc Crary,and George H. Dubose are hearby constituted trustees of the Brooklyn Male and Female Academy."
A catalog advertisement (1864-1865) for the Brooklyn Male and Female Academy indicated that J.C. Lowry, A.M., a graduate of Trinity College, Dublin, was principal; Mrs. J.C. Robinson of Brooklyn as Assistant; Mrs.F.A Robinson of Brooklyn was Music Teacher.
Trustees listed: Asa Johnston, C. Johnston, L.Turk, A.J. Robinson, C. Floyd, J.A Robinson, John Scott, M.D., with the following courses offered:

Spelling, Read, and Writing ................................................................ $10 per session
English Grammar, Geography, Arithmetic, and History ..................... $13 per session
The higher English Branches of Science ............................................ $18 per session
Latin, Greek, French and Spanish ....................................................... $20 per session
Music, including use of instrument ..................................................... $25 per session

The catalog also stated that "the location of the Academy is undoubtedly healthy, and sufficiently remote from the business part of the village to be free from the noise and temptations incident to a place of public resort. The sale of ardent spirits in the place I prohibited by law. Board can be had in the place on reasonable terms."
The Academy (or school) was organized long before it was incorporated by the Act of Alabama in 1851, the following is a list of the principals and teachers from 1818 to 1928 as compiled by the Brooklyn School in 1949:
