Ukie GenSearch

Hello, and welcome to my Ukrainian Genealogical Research pages.  It is intended for anyone researching their Ukrainian heritage.

My intention is to make this site a collaborative effort. You never know who, from where, can have that one little lead that can bring results to your search. I have found that in my own search, and due to the political and administrative structure of Ukraine in the last decade, it can be rather difficult to know where to look.

I hope people will subscribe to the mailing list, and post their queries, as well as any successes. Some subscribers may have invaluable links to databases or URLs that can point others in the right direction.  Then there are days when a little encouragement can go a long way to restore the spirit.

I welcome any submissions and will set up a directory of all related URLs.  I realize that there are many sites that can inform you of Ukraine's history, culture, etc. This is not my intention. Here you will find links that are directly involved in Ukrainian genealogical research, in a community-interactive, up-to-date format. I will check out each site personally, make sure it is valid, and will categorize them with a brief description. No more dead links, or wasting of your time. The categories/descriptions will be made as the submissions come in - some are province or state specific, some are general. By default, each link will give credit to whoever submitted it, unless requested otherwise. As my site develops, I will contact some of the bigger sites for permission to link to them, and will categorize them as well.

The greatest tool in genealogical research is communication and the exchange of information between like-minded people. For this purpose, I have set up a mailing list. This will be a very MODERATED mailing list. I, and many others I am sure, have had enough with flaming, non-pertinent entries and the like. Each and every e-mail will be properly referenced, and your time will NOT be wasted with squabbling, mud-slinging and other personal agendas. I simply will not list them.

If you establish a habit of inappropriate content, I will unsubscribe you from the list.

Also, there will be times when someone needs help translating writings on backs of pictures, etc. You can e-mail the List your pictures, but I will set up a separate page for pictorial submissions with a direct link in the body of the e-mail, instead of sending that picture out to every list member. Not everyone has a fast computer, and who wants to waste 5 minutes downloading a picture that they would rather not? Instead, for those that want to see it and want to help, they can click on the link and view it on the site's pages.

Lastly, I would like to mention that my intention is not to profit in any way from this site, except to be an invaluable resource for the serious Ukrainian researcher, and perhaps even have a submission that helps me in my own search. To this end, I welcome all professional genealogists, historians, scholars, community leaders, other site holders and anyone who wants to help others in their searches.

Please note, that I will edit all e-mails --- so if you're hoping to plug your professional services, or advertise in any way, no one in the list will see it, so don't waste your time, or mine. Naturally, some of the URL's in the links page may have their own banner advertisements - I can't help that - that's the site's own independent advertising.

My site will be a little scant in content at the beginning. Don't worry, I will be adding and improving just as quickly as I can.

Thank you for taking the time to read, hopefully you'll want to participate in the e-mail list, but mostly, thank you for your patience.

Good luck, and God Bless!

Anna M. Markiw, Proud Ukrainian
