Renovation of Orritor Presbyterian Church, 1934-1936

Committee's Report

After the completion of extensive repairs to the outside of the Church, the installation of Electric Light in the Church, Manse and School, and the erection of a Memorial Entrance Gate, on the Meeting-house Road, in memory of the late Mr Samuel Henry, the Church Committee decided to embark on a large and very necessary scheme of removation of the interior.

The late Mr W.R. Black's bequest being left specifically for supplementing the stipend, the Committee, after consulting the relatives, decide to utilise Mr. Samuel Henry's bequest to inaugurate a Renovation Fund and to launch an appeal for the balance.

The scheme included a new Porch on the west gable, a new Session Room on the east gable, with new floor, seating and pulpit with the necessary woodwork, painting and redecorating.

The work was carried out very satisfactorily by the contractors, Messrs Collen Bros., under the supervision of Mr. R.R. Black, Architect, a former member of the Congregation.

Special Dedicatory Services were held on 13th and 20th May 1934, the special preachers being:-

Very Rev T.M. Johnstone, B.A., D.D., Newington
Very Rev Edward Clarke, M.A., D.D., Stabane
Rev W.J. Harrison, B.A., Crumlin Road
Rev Prof W.J. Farley, M.A., B.D., Magee College, Derry

The following kindly attended and acted as special collectors:-

Rowley Elliott, M.P., J.J.
G.Ross Gilmore, M.A.
Wm. Alexander, U.D.C.
Robert A. Johnstone
Dr William Cousley
W.S. Lamont, M.R.C.V.S.
William French, J.P.
Mervyn Glasgow
Samuel Weatherup, B.A.
Frederick Hobson
Thomas E. Black
Samuel J. Henry
James F. Finlay
David Morris B.A.
Samuel M. M'Cully
Thomas Phillips

These collections amounted to £39 10s 2d, which sum was put to the credit of the Renovation Fund.

Appended are a Balance Sheet and list of donations and subscriptions.

The subscription list is not yet closed. Although a balance of £9 15s 3d is shown this is insufficient to complete the furnishing of the Church, and further subscriptions will be gratefully received by any of the Collectors.

The Committee propose to erect two Bronze Tablets in the porch, in memory of the late Mr W.R. Black, Brisbane, and Mr Samuel Henry, Dublin, for their generous bequests to the Church.

The Committee wishes to thank all those who assisted in any way in furthering this large undertaking and heavy responsibility, especially Mr R.R. Black who designed and supervised the work, and Mr Charles A. Wray fro the handsome set of collecting plates given in memory of his late sister, Miss Martha Wray, also the Session and Committee of Falkirk Presbyterian Church for the gift of the Pulpit.

The Committee cannot conclude its report without paying a special tribute to their miniter, Rev. George M'Cahon, M.A., for his inspiration and guidance and the active part he took in furthering the work and bringing it to such a successful conclusion.
