Death of Magherafelt Doctor

The death occurred on Wednesday of last week, at an advanced age, of Dr. Joseph P. Kerlin, Magherafelt. A native of Drumsurn, Garvagh, Dr. Kerlin had a distinguished medical career. He was educated at St. Colum's College, Derry, and later at the National University of Ireland, where he obtained his M.B. and B.Ch. degrees in 1907. During his term at the university he was awarded five medals, including a gold medal for out-standing study. Dr Kerlin commenced his practice in Magherafelt in 1908 and retired only a few months ago. He was brother of the late Rev. Chas Kerlin, the late Rev. Patrick Kerlin and of Sister Mary Kieran, and an uncle of Rev. W. O'Connor, Moville and Rev. J. O'Connor. In his earlier years Dr Kerlin was prominently identified with the Nationalist Party and the G.A.A. He is survived by his wife, Mrs R. Kerlin. |
