William Tyler

From England, he took the oath of fidelity in New Haven, Connecticut on 7th of April 1657. His estate was inventoried on 8th Feb. 1692-3 at 348

pounds 15s 8d. He removed to Milford, Connecticut, where he married Abigail Terrill, daughter of Roger Terrill (from England, who was at Milford in 1639, was made a freeman in 1669, and married Abigail Ufford, daughter of Thomas Ufford, Sr. There is a stone erected to Roger Terrill on Memorial Bridge in Milford.).

The real home of this line is Wallingford, Connecticut where William's sons William and John, the only males who had issue, removed early and left numerous descendants. The first two generations of this family figure in New Haven, Milford, Derby, and Wallingford, all early settlements in the present New Haven County. Some suppose this family to have come from Devonshire, England. There is strong evidence to prove that William was related to Roger (1) of the Branford line. A tradition is that the Rev. John Tyler of Norwich Connecticut visited Devonshire, England relatives. The children of this family were born in Milford. The four elder children were baptized there in Sept. 1669.

Notes for WILLIAM TYLER:

Born in Milford about 1665; baptized there, Sept. 1669; accepted to full communion, Dec. 14, 1685; married. in Derby, Connecticut June 3, 1695 to Mary Lothrop who died in Wallingford March 11, 1754. In 1703 in company with Samuel Stanley, he purchased the mills at the present Yalesville, Connecticut (a part of Wallingford formerly and for many years called Tyler's Mills), and bought out Stanley's interest the following year. This was the old gristmill of Wallingford, first owned and controlled by the town but in 1707 the town made absolute and final contract with Tyler, surrendering municipal control. The mill remained in the family about 100 years, through William, Samuel, Samuel, Jr. who died in 1822, after which they were set off to his daughter, Merab, whose guardian, Nehemiah Rice, sold them to Charles Yale, Esq. who renewed the surroundings and changed the name to Yalesville. Quite a settlement early grew up around "the Mills", and from the ownership of numbers of kindred early acquired the name of "Tyler's Mills". They were an old "Tory Mill" where grist for the British was ground in the Revolution, taken to Branford, and smuggled over to Long Island. The Yale who succeeded the Tylers was a dissolute man, but the place has regained its grace. The old buildings were consumed by fire about 1860. William (2) is rated on the Wallingford Grand List of 1707 at 57 pounds. The children were born in Wallingford.

Notes for MILES CHAUNCEY TYLER:

Miles Chauncey Tyler was born 13 Dec 1764 in Wallingford, Connecticut. His parents were Isaac Tyler and Abigail Chauncey.Apparently Miles Chauncey was named after Isaac's first wife (Susannah Miles) and second wife (Chauncey's mother Abigail Chauncey).Since most records show him as M. Chauncey or Chauncey, it appears he used his middle name most often. However, he appears in the 1800 US Census as Miles C Tyler residing in New Haven County.Chauncey did serve in the Revolutionary War. Nelson Tiffany of Norwich spent hours documenting and locating graves of these soldiers in all the towns of Chenango County lists him in Revolutionary War Vets Chenango County NY, however there is no record he ever applied for a pension and he is not in the DAR index.†† Chauncey Tyler apparently moved to Smithville after 1800. Chauncey was in NY during the 1810 census The first settlements in Smithville occurred around 1799, but Chauncey is not listed as an early settler in the History of Chenango and Madison Counties.According to Helen Reed Tuttle in her history on McDonough and Vicinity, Chauncey came from Wallingford, CT to Smithville to build corduroy roads. He is buried in Union Cemetery in McDonough, NY.

SPECIAL NOTE:For several years I have tried to determine the father of Amos Tyler, my great-great-great grandfather. The best theory I have is that his father was Miles Chauncey Tyler.I have yet to find any direct evidence on which the children of Miles Chauncey Tyler were. What I mean my direct evidence is that I have not found a list of children attributed to Miles Chauncey Tyler. However, the following are the children I think he had and the information those conclusions are based.

The following are the children I think may be attributed to Miles Chauncey Tyler:

Susan, Nelson, Thomas, and Amos.

1.Susan Tyler was born Apr 9, 1801.Researcher Diane Clark reported census information revealed that she was born in Connecticut. She married Charles Edward Clark in 1819. Their first child was named Miles Sanford Clark.Since Miles was Susan's father's name (if Miles Chauncey Tyler was her father) and Sanford was the maiden name of her mother. Susan also had a child who was born in Chenango County NY.It makes sense that Susan Tyler is the daughter of Miles Chauncey Tyler.

2. Thomas Tyler (according to cemetery record) he died Apr 24, 1879 at the age of 86, which means he was born around 1793.Chauncey and Thomas both lived in Smithville in 1820 and 1830. In 1840 they both lived in McDonough.Miles Chauncey Tyler's wife, Sarah was living with Thomas during the 1860 census after Chauncey died.Thomas Tyler and Miles Chauncey Tyler are both buried in Union Cemetery in McDonough New York.Only a few Tylers are buried there. It is reasonable that Thomas Tyler was the son of Miles Chauncey Tyler.

3. Nelson Tyler lived next door to Miles Chauncey Tyler in 1840.He and Miles both lived in Smithville in 1830.There is a good chance that Nelson is a son.

4. Amos Tyler lived in McDonough in 1840 as well as the rest of the Tylers.Amos moved to Tioga County PA in the late 1840s probably around 1849.Probably a good chance he was a son.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the 1790 CT census Chauncey had the following in his household:

20010 20010 00

2 Free white males under age 10

1 Free white male between age 26 and 45

2 Free white female under age 10

1 Free white female between age 26 and 45

In the 1810 Chenango County NY census Chauncey had the following in his household:

11010 10010 00

1 Free white male under age 10

1 Free white male between age 10 and 16

1 Free white male between age 26 and 45

1 Free white female under age 10

1 Free white female between 26 and 45
