1.  JOHANNES2 BARTLE  (PHILLIP BALTESAR1 BARTHEL) was born February 07, 1735/36, and died May 17, 1808.  He married MARGARETHA BEARD.  She was born July 22, 1737, and died March 30, 1804 in Oxford, NY.

 Johannes(John W.) and Richard BARTLE, brothers, from whom most of the Bartles in this country are supposed to have descended, came from Germany previous to the Revolution, and settled on the Livingston Manor, in Columbia county. Richard afterwards removed to the west, where many of his descendants now live. John removed to Oxford, with his six sons and one daughter, and failing by some wrong-doing of others to secure the land promised him, settled on the west side of the river, at the mouth of Bowman's Creek, some four miles below Oxford village, on the place now owned and occupied by his great-grandson, Irwin Bartle, which has ever since been retained in the Bartle family. There he kept the first inn in the town, and there he, his son David, and grandson West Bartle, died. His children were John, Peter, Hendrick, Philip, Andrew, David and Elizabeth. John was a harness-maker. He lived and plied his vocation in various parts of the town, in which he also died. He married a lady named DUFFEY, by whom he had ten children, and after her death, he married Lydia TUTTLE, by whom he also had ten children. Nineteen children attended his funeral. Peter, Hendrick and Philip settled on Panther Hill, which derived its name from the fact that a panther had been killed upon it in the locality of their father's settlement, Peter, where Jacob BUCKLEY now lives; Hendrick, where Cyrus CRANDALL now lives; and Philip, where Lewis KETCHUM lives.

Peter, born September 24, 1769, died in Ohio, March 22, 1831.  He located on what was afterwards known as Jacob Buckley farm, and was a surveyor, running all the township's lines in this vicinity.  He married twice, his first wife was Tabitha Loomis, daughter of Benaiah Loomis.  This marriage, which took place in May 1795, was the first one contacted in the town.  Four children were born to them:  Annis, Uri, Caroline and Lot.  Soon after the close of the war of 1812, Mr Bartle went west, where  he contracted his second marriage and had seven children.

Peter married twice. His second wife was Tabitha, daughter of Benaiah LOOMIS. This marriage, which took place in May 1795, was the first one contracted in the town. He was a surveyor and surveyed all this section of country. He went west soon after the close of the war of 1812, and died in Ohio, March 22, 1831. He was born Sept. 24, 1769. He had four children by his first wife and five by his second. Only two are living: Uriah, in Oxford, and Caroline, widow of Orson WEBB, in Wellsboro, Pa

Augustus Bartle, a native of Chenango County, New York, born Jun 19, 1796,was a son of John Bartle, a native of Massachusetts, and the father of seventeen children, of whom Augustus was the fourth child and oldest son.  He learned the stonecutter's trade in boyhood, and followed it unit 1841.  In that year he came to Tioga County, Pennsylvania and purchased a farm now owned by his son.  He married Cynthia Buckley, a daughter of John Buckley, of Oxford, New York, who bore him ten children.  Augustus C who died in 1890 in Texas; John deceased; Jacob C., of Delmar; Peter W., a resident of Arkansas; Mary J. wife of Emanuel Impson of Potter County; William V., who died early in youth; Emily E., widow of J. C. Wheeler, of Wellsboro; Ann A., wife of Lewis Hastings;, and Amy C., wife of Floyd Taylor, both  residents of Delmar.

12.  JACOB C.5 BARTLE (AUGUSTUS A.4, JOHN3, JOHANNES2, PHILLIP BALTESAR1 BARTHEL) was born June 29, 1825 in Oxford, New York.  He married EUNICE BACON April 06, 1848, daughter of OLIVER BACON.  She was born January 15, 1828, and died September 07, 1890.

Jacob C. Bartle was born in Oxford, Chenango County, NY, June 29, 1825 and lived in this native country until 1843, when he came to Tioga county, whither his father had preceded him some two years.  He labored at farm work in the summer and in the lumber woods during the winter seasons, for six years.  In 1849 he purchased 240 acres of land in Delmar Township, but subsequently sold the greater portion of it, retaining 72 acres, upon which he lived. He operated a gristmill on the place for twelve years, when it was burned.  He than ran a mill in Charleston township for three years, at the end of which time he erected a mill upon the old site, conducted it four years, when it was again burned, and he has since devoted his whole attention to farming.  Mr. Bartle was married April 6, 1848, to Eunice Bacon, a daughter of Oliver Bacon.  She was born January 15, 1828 and bore him seven children; Henrietta H., who has been twice married, first to P. G. Lyon, of whom she had four children, and afterwards to J. T. Wortendyke, of Delmar township; Clara J. who died April 9, 1890; Eli, a resident of Shippen township; Adaline, wife of Henry J. Mitchell, of Delmar; Nellie., wife of Wilbur West, of Delmar; Lottie T., wife of Charles L. Miller, of Addison, New York, and Eloise, wife of Clinton West, of Delmar.  Mrs. Bartle died September 7, 1890, aged sixty-two years.  The family is adherents of the Presbyterian Church, and in politics, Republicans.  Mr Bartle  has been a school director for three years, and is a member of the Patrons of Husbandry.

13.  WARDEN E.5 TYLER (ANNICE4 BARTLE, PETER3, JOHANNES2, PHILLIP BALTESAR1 BARTHEL) was born October 28, 1839 in Chenango County, New York, and died March 04, 1903 in Appleton, Minnesota.  He married CATHERINE NANCY ORR August 24, 1864 in Delmar, PA, daughter of ROBERT ORR and DELIA COOK.  She was born August 02, 1839 in New York, and died April 04, 1916 in Appleton, Minnesota.

 

Notes for WARDEN E. TYLER:

Warden was born in Chenango County NY.  He and his family moved to Delmar Township, Tioga County, PA sometime after 140 and before 1850.  Corporal Warden E. Tyler enlisted from Tioga County, Pennsylvania, September 26, 1861, and mustered into United States service at Harrisburg, PA, in October, 1861, as a private of Company "I", 45th Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, under Capt Chase and Cols Welch and Curtis, to serve three years or during the war.  The regiment was assigned to the 2d Brigade, 3d Division, 9th or Wandering Corps, and the said W. E. Tyler took part with the regiment in the battles of:  Edisto Island, S. C., April 18, '62, Fredericksburg, Va., Dec 13 '62, Siege of Knoxville, Tenn., Nov 17 to Dec 5, '63, Fort Sanders, Va., Nov 29, '63, Wilderness, Va., May 5-7, '64, Spotsylvania C. H. Va., May 8-18, '64, North Anna River, May 23-27, '64, where he was wounded in right foot by gunshot and his second and third toe on his right foot amputated. Confined about a year in McClellan Hospital and at Baltimore.  Was discharged in December, '63 at Blaine's Cross Roads, Tenn., to re-enlist same day for three years in same company and regiment.  Captured while foraging and imprisoned in Libby and Belle Isle for 7 days and exchanged. According to the Tyler family oral history, he was exchanged when the soldier to be exchanged had died and Warden Tyler said he was the soldier in his place. Promoted to corporal.  Honorably discharged in July 1865, at McClellan Hospital, Philadelphia, on account of disability.   After the Civil War, he and his wife moved to Appleton, MN where he was a farmer.
