Pvt. John Barnett Kizer Sumner Co. Captured 21 Jul. 1863 Ewington, OH. POW, Camp Douglas. See
this website for more on the capture: http://www.nashville.com/~jack.masters/we1863.htm.
Camp Douglas was a prisoner of war internment camp near the 35th-street estate of Stephen Douglas,
named for the late senator.
Camp Douglas, located near Chicago, Ill., was a sprawling training base for Union soldiers before it was
converted into a prisoner-of-war camp for Confederate soldiers captured at the February 16, 1862,
surrender of Fort Donelson. More than 7,000 prisoners were in the camp, many of them ill-clad and sick,
with only one surgeon to care for them.

Conditions at Camp Douglas were horrendous. Disease, hunger, poor sanitation, lack of adequate
clothing, and miserably cold weather were endured by the men incarcerated there. The president of the
U.S. Sanitary Commission inspected the prison and gave a dismal report of an "amount of standing water,
of unpoliced grounds, of foul sinks, of general disorder, of soil reeking with miasmic accretions, of rotten
bones and emptying of camp kettles.....enough to drive a sanitarian mad." The barracks were so filthy and
infested, he said, that "nothing but fire can cleanse them."

In January and February 1863 an average of 18 prisoners died every day, for a death rate of 10 percent a
month.

Notes for BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SR KIZER:
Married a woman named Ann that was 15 years older than him. She had 12 children with 3 living in
1900. Not sure if any were Ben's. Ann died in 1904 and Ben remarried in 1905.
Married Nora Bethel Unknown., 25 years younger than him) and had 3 daughters. Nora died in
childbirth of Irene Dixie Kizer in 1910. Need any information concerning this birth, death, obituary,
maiden name, etc. She is buried at Hamilin East Cemetery in Jones County. Nora was born in TX.
Ben took the girls back to Sumner Co, TN. He gave newborn Irene to brother Orvil and his wife Elnora
to raise as they had no children. He took the other two girls to Nashville, remarried and had two boys,
one possibly named Ben. One source says Ben Sr was married 4 times. Found through Ben Jr's ss app
that one wife is Maggie Hullet.

Family states: After he took Irene to be raised by brother in Sumner CO, near Goodlettsville, he moved to
Nashville, with the other two girls, remarried and had two boys. There is a child born to a Benjamin and
Maggie Kizer in Davidson County in 1912. Family states Ben and the boys lived in Chicago, IL at one
time as the two boys were raised there.
Where is Ben buried, when did he die?

Notes for ANN UNKN:
[family.FBK.FTW]

Obituary in Dension, Grayson CO, TX paper, 11/13/1904, states she died 11/7/1904 and was survived by
a daughter, Mrs. Walter Shulze of Van Alstyne, TX and a Mrs. Phillips.

Mrs. Annie M. Kizer, aged 56 years, died Monday from a congestive chill. The lady had been ailing for
several days but was able to be at her place of business at the corner of Main street and Mirick Avenue.
the remains were removed to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Phillips, corner Morton street and Mirick
avenue. The deceased also leaves a daughter, Mrs. Walter Shulze, who rrsides at Van Alstyne, Texas.
Sunday Gazetteer, Sunday, November 13, 1904.

Walter Shulze is the son of Fredrick A and Elvira M Shulze buried in Fairview in Denison. Has sister
Helen and brother Ralph (Of OK City OK). What was Walter's wife's full name? Walter is 19in 1900.

Also above obit was:
The Gazetteer man dropped into the Denison Candy and Bottling works the other day and was surprised
at the magnitude of the plant. It looked like business down there. It gives employment to about thirty
people. This is an industry that should receive the most hearty encouragement, and we are glad to learn
that it is doing better at present than at any time in its history. the proprietors, the Sweeney Brothers, are
hustlers. They are giving the public a quality of confectionary that is just as good as any foreign product.
The Sweeney Brothers have four drummers on the road and they are pushing their trade to all
Texas and the Indian Territory.

Is this where Ben worked? He is listed as a confectioner on the 1900 census. Was he one of the 4 on the
road when Annie died or were they divorced. He is not mentioned in the obit. Where is the third child
that was listed on the 1900 census as Ann states she had 12 children with 3 living at that time.

Ann's business was 427 W. Main (also residence) selling cigars, fruits and confectioneries.
