"History of Texas"

Page 686

Captain P. C. BUCHANAN, deceased, was one of the prominent and well-known citizens of Bosque County. He was born in Wythe County, Virginia, on the 11th of August, 1811, and was the son of George BUCHANAN, a native of the same county. The grandfather, John BUCHANAN, was of Scotch-Irish lineage and a relative of President BUCHANAN. The father married Miss Agnes LAMMIE, who was born and reared, in Wythe County, and was the daughter of Andrew LAMMIE, also a native of the Old Dominion, who was of French extraction and participated in the early Indian wars. Our subject was the sixth in order of birth in a family of seven children, five sons and two daughters, only one of who is now living George, a prominent attorney and politician of Independence, Missouri.

During his boyhood and youth the Captain received a good education. On the 17th of October, 1839, he was united in marriage with Rachel GRAHAM, a highly educated and refined lady, whose birth occurred August 14, 1822, and their wedding was celebrated in Smyth county, Virginia. Her father, Samuel GRAHAM, was born at sea while his parents, Robert and Mary (CRAIG) GRAHAM, were coming to America from Ireland, and they became early settlers of Wythe county, Virginia.

At the age of twenty-five years Samuel GRAHAM wedded
Miss Rachel MONTGOMERY, a native of Wythe county, and a daughter of
John MONTGOMERY, also of Irish origin. To this worthy couple were born thirteen children, --five sons, and eight daughters, --namely:
Nancy GRAHAM
Mary C.GRAHAM,
Amanda GRAHAM
Eliza GRAHAM,
Margaret GRAHAM,
Helen GRAHAM,
Catherine GRAHAM,
Rachel GRAHAM,
John M. GRAHAM,
Robert C. GRAHAM,
Samuel I. GRAHAM,
James Monroe GRAHAM and
William L. GRAHAM

Five of the family are still living. The father, who was a merchant, served as a major in the war of 1812, was a Democrat in politics, and a member of the Presbyterian church. He died at the age of sixty-one years, and his wife was sixty-three when she too was called to the final home.
For seven years previous to the civil war Mr. BUCHANAN served as a captain of the militia, and during that struggle held the same office. In civic affairs he also took a leading part, being a prominent and active member of the Democratic party and served as presiding justice. In 1875 he became a resident of Bosque county, locating hear Iredell, where he owned a good farm and there made his home until his death, on the 11th of February, 1886. He was a man of strictest integrity and honor, acting as elder in the Presbyterian church, and was one of the most highly respected and esteemed citizens of the community.

To the Captain and his estimable wife were born eleven children, as follows:

S. A. BUCHANAN, born November 21, 1840, enlisted early in the war, was taken prison at the battle of Waynesburg, Virginia, February 2, 1865, and died at Fort Delaware June 20 following;

Louisa M.BUCHANAN, born March 26, 1842, died of scarlet fever August 2, 1847;

George C. BUCHANAN, born December 23, 1843, was wounded at the battle of Dry Creek, Virginia, and is still a cripple; he married
S. C. GILLESPIE, has an interesting family of two sons and nine daughters, and is living in Scurry county, this state;

John Graham BUCHANAN, born October 17, 1845; died August 12, 1847, of scarlet fever;

Nancy A. BUCHANAN, born May 18, 1847, died April 2, 1849; James M., of New Mexico;

William F. BUCHANAN, born April 8, 1850, ex-postmaster of Iredell and a popular teacher of the county;

Amanda BUCHANAN, born December 17, 1852, first married Charles Fipps, had two sons, --James B. and William F., --and is now the wife of S. F. Marshall, of Iredell;

Montgomery C. BUCHANAN, born July 14, 1855, married Mattie Myers and lives in Bosque county; Helen M., born December 14, 1856, is the wife of S. S. Barry, of Iredell;
and
B. R. BUCHANAN, the subject of this sketch.

The last named is one of the popular and representative citizens of Bosque county, where he arrived in 1875. His birth occurred on the 18th of December, 1859, in the Old Dominion, where he was reared and acquired a good education, which well fits him for the practical and responsible duties of life. In 1884 he went to the Panhandle district, where he engaged in the stock business for a time. He now owns a fine farm of five hundred and sixty acres in Bosque county, sixty-five of which is under a high state of cultivation, and besides general farming he is also extensively engaged in the raising of stock, including cattle, sheep and hogs.

In March 1885, he solemnized the marriage of
B. R. BUCHANAN and Miss Emma STRAWN, a native of Georgia and a daughter of
Albert and Julia STRAWN, the former now deceased.
Socially Mr. BUCHANAN is deservedly popular, as he is affable and courteous in manner and possesses that essential qualification to success in public life, --that of making friends readily and of strengthening the ties of all friends as time advances. In his political views he is in sympathy with the Democratic party.

Mom and I listened to the radio and cooked in our cabover while the guys went home to Mom & Dads to bring their boat over, after dropping their travel trailer here at Sardis Lake in OK. Mom and I listened to Ten Rounds of Jose Cuervo by Tracy Byrd. :) So every time I hear that song, it reminds me of Mom and my time together.

He was born about 1732 (other sources state 1724 or 1730) in Chester County, Pennsylvania and moved to Augusta County, Virginia about 1743. He was a weaver and farmer.
On March 19, 1753, he bought 370 acres on Walker's Creek adjoining his father, James Buchanan, from Benjamin Borden. He then sold that land to James McCown.
On August 20, 1754, he bought 240 acres in Beverly Manor on the patent line from James and Margaret Roseborough for L63 (another source states L50). He Married about 1756 (another source states 1758) making the connection with the Augusta County Buchanans who were already living there.
In 1761 he posted bond for the administration of the estate of James McFerrin. On August 20, 1771, he and his wife sold their 240 acre plantation to Charles Berry for L90.

(Family record written by Alexander Buchanan, 3rd son of this John Buchanan. Augusta County, Virginia Deed Book 6, page 347. Deed Book 17, page 282. Will Book 3, page 23)

In 1771, John and his wife moved to Locus Cove in Rich Valley in what is now Smyth County, Virginia. When he aquired his lands there has not been determined and since there were several men with the same name in Augusta County and Southwest, Virginia, it is difficult to determine which references are to him.

Note:There is a John Buchanan who was a Captain of a Virginia unit, according to American Geneaological Research Institute- "Buchanan Family History" page 63. This John Buchanan who also married a Martha Buchanan was born 1724 and died 1783.

On September 8, 1774 an Indian raid through Locus Cove caused his family and that of his brother Archibald to take refuge in Royal Oak Fort- now Marion, Virginia.

(Botetourt County, Virginia, Tax List, 1772; Goodridge Wilson, "Smythe County History and Traditions" (Kingsport, Tennessee, Kingsport Press, 1932, page 53).

In 1776, as a resident of the western part of Fincastle County, he signed a petition to divide the county; on November 25, 1795, he signed a petition to form what became Tazawell County, Virginia.
On November 14 and 15, 1784, John had surveyed two tracts of 90 and 160 acres in Rich Vally on the North Fork of the Holston River. On June 21, 1806, he gave his son Patrick 274 acres on the North Fork. On June 26, 1806, he gave John Buchanan, Jr. 128 acres in Locus Cove and he gave his son James Buchanan 148 in Locus Cove and 148 acres on the North Fork of the Holston River.

(Washington County, Virginia Entries and Surveys, Book 1, pages 104, 113. Wythe County, Virginia Deed Book 5, pages 236, 131, 132. Book 4, page 387)

Family tradition has long stated that John died in 1781 of wounds received at Guilford Courthouse, but these deeds of 1806 would seem to refute that. No record has been found of his death or the settlement of his estate.
