Henry Stone Kunkle (1823 - 1913)
Henry Stone Kunkle > George Heinrich "Henry" Kunkle

Biographical Sketch

The story of Henry Stone Kunkle, if not a rags to riches story, is at least a story of a man that went from rags to living reasonably well and to one who put his name, literally, on the pages of northwest Ohio history and on a road sign.

Henry Stone was born the son of George Heinrich "Henry" Kunkle and Mary Catherine Stone in 1822 or 23 near the settlement of New Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvania. Coming from a poor family, at an early age he was introduced to hard work and long hours. When still a young boy, after his mother died, he was bound out as a laborer to a neighbor. George Henry had very little formal schooling but did manage to learn the basics of the three R's.  By 1844 he had saved a little money and ventured westward to look for his brother, John Henry, who he had not seen in a number of years.  He found him in Williams County, Ohio near the small community of West Unity.

In a different township of the same county, Henry Stone initially purchased a quater section of land in order to put down roots. He work at various jobs in the area for the next five years, saving his money, until 1850 when news of the gold strike in California called him west, at least temporarily.  After two trips to California in a matter of about 6 years, Henry Stone had saved enough money to finally marry a lady from New Bloomfield, PA (Matilda Jane Baltosser) and begin living on the property he had purchased in Williams County, Ohio years before.  With the money he had saved, he purchased a considerable amount of additional land and settled the unincorporated village that bares his name to this day -- Kunkle, Ohio.

He fathered four children with Matilda Jane -- Mary Alice, Martha Jane, John Calvin and Ira H.  Henry Stone's house, as well as the houses of his son John Calvin and one of his grandchildren, Henry Phillip Kunkle, stand tall and strong to this day -- much like Henry Stone Kunkle had stood throughout his life.  Henry Stone died in 1913 at the ripe old age of 90.  He is buried with his wife in Floral Grove Cemetery just outside of Pioneer, Ohio -- just north of Kunkle, Ohio.
