Dundee was first named Harpending Corners, Her Early Settler, Eddytown or Lakemont, was then the Bid community; building Boom Started Century Ago. Barrington Township Named By Pioneers from Mass. Post Office was located at Warsaw.
The village o f Dundee was first known by the name of Harpenden's Corners. The first settler who came here in 1807 were Isaac Stark and a family by the name of Houghtalling. They built log housed. Stark on what is now Main St. and Houghtaling on Seneca St. The original tract of land included in their homestead was around 100 acres. then more settlers came to make their home and among them as family by the name of Harpending. As the settlement grew, it had to have a name and it was agreed to call it Harpending's Corners. "Corner" it certainly was, as it presented a dreary, desolate village. The streets were rough and filled with piles of boards on either side. Cows, pigs and geese strayed at will. There were no shade trees, churches, schools, lawyers or stages. There were just 30 buildings in small clusters on the four streets, which today are Seneca, Main, Union and was built by a man known throughout the settlement as "Ducklegs Johnny." He erected a double log house at the lower end of Main street and part of this was a tavern. Jonathan Botsford erected another log house nearby and in this the first store was started. The making of potash was the chief industry of the village. Eddytown, or what is now Lakemont, was the big village, and Harpendings Corners just a secondary at fair. Eddytown, Wayne and Tryone all had a daily mail while Harpendings Corners had just weekly service. In 1831 a building boom came to the Corners and several business blocks, dwellings and a Baptist church were erected. A short time before this Samuel Harpending had erected a hotel, and at the time of the boom he greatly enlarged his structure. Then it was that the village of Eddystown began to lose its prestige and Harpendings Corner became a business centre with Starky Corners paying a close second. In 1834 it was decided that this settlement was to important in place to be known by a name of Corners so a change was agitated. Several names were suggested, such as Plainville, Harpendale, LaGrange and Starkville, and many others, the number of names proposed being only limited to the number of inhabitants. Palinville, which was quite popular was turned down when it was found that another place in the state had the same name. FInally at a meeting called to decide this important matter, James Gifford an old fashioned singing school teacher proposed the name of Dundee. He was not a Scotch man but had taken the name from the "musica macra" it is thought that the reason for the name Dundee being taken was due to his popularity among the people. dundee was incorporated in 1848, with a list of 250 voters. Later Mr. Gifford went to the western part of this county and once again he was in a settlement in Illinois where the people were deciding on a name for their village and thinking of his success in naming Dundee back in Yates Co, he again offend this name for the western village and the people stood by his choice.
