CIVIL WAR VETERAN
OBSERVES BIRTHDAY

Mr. and Mrs. P. B. Hart gave a birthday party in honor of Mrs. Hart’s uncle Geo. Doner, it being his 85th birthday. In spite of Mr. Doner’s advanced age, he seemed to be as young as his invited guests and during the evening he gave a few steps of his one-time clog dance, which was enjoyed by all present. After a lunch was served on the lawn, with decorations of red, white, and blue bunting, and a large American flag, they all assembled in the living room, where games and music were enjoyed. Mr. Doner was the recipient of many useful gifts. Those present were Mr. Doner’s sister, Mrs. Geo. Patchin, Felts Mills, Mrs. Robert Cline, Miss Lottie Breslow, Mrs. W. W. Gale, Mrs. Oren Fowler, and Fred Dorr.

BIRTHDAY PARTY

(February 19, 1910)

After snowing and blowing hard all day, in the evening the moon came out in all its glory and brightness so that by its light 40 of the friends and neighbors of George Patchin, invaded his home, taking him by surprise, it being his 68th birthday. The evening was pleasantly enjoyed, the young people participating in games while the older members had a social time. A bountenous repast was served under the direction of Mrs. Fannie Patchin. A. A. French in behalf of those present presented Mr. Patchin with a purse of money. At the midnight hour the guests departed wishing Mr. Patchin many happy returns of the day.

There was a very pleasant surprise party at G. F. Patchen’s last Thursday evening. Mr. Patchen was absent and did not arrive home until about an hour after the 77 guests had taken possession of his home. It was his 55th birthday. Rev. B. G. Blaisdell and wife, of Depauville, favored us with a few fine pieces in singing. The Gray Brothers, Orvis Mather, Clarence Ellis and Mrs. Preston Ellis were present, and all enjoyed their fine playing, which added much to the evening’s entertainment. After all had feasted at the bountiful tables the guests departed for home, wishing Mr. and Mrs. Patchen many more happy birthdays. On Tuesday evening a large company were present to help celebrate Mrs. Patchen’s birthday.

Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Littlefield, of Watertown, are visiting friends at Clayton.

Mrs. Emma Hart Surprised On Birthday

Mrs. Emma Hart was surprised at her home in Clayton Sunday, the occasion being in honor of her birthday. A one o’clock dinner was enjoyed. Those present were: Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Dixon and son, Gerald of Deferno; Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hart and children, Dorothy and James of Line Road; Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gale of Clayton; Mrs. Betsey Austin of Felts Mills and Mrs. Emma Hart.

A Family Gathering.

Depauville, June 4. -- One of the happy times in Mrs. Elizabeth Schnauber’s life was Saturday, June 1, when her children and grandchildren assembled at her home in honor of her 82d birthday. Mrs. Schnauber, although just recovering from her recent illness, heartily enjoyed the day. The only regret was the necessary absence of some members of her family. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. William Schnauber and Mrs. William Tracy of Lafargeville, Mrs. Lewis Haas, Miss Ina A. Haas and Mrs. Anna Schnauber, of Redwood. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Linnell of Clayton, Mr. and Mrs. George Schnauber, Mr. and Mrs. John Haas, Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Schnauber, Miss Clara Schnauber, Miss Bertha Haas, Albert A. Haas and Miss Emma Schnauber of Depauville.

Birthday Surprise

Mrs. Emma Hart was pleasantly surprised at her home Friday evening by relatives and friends, the occasion being her birthday.

The evening was spent playing cards, followed by a midnight supper.

Those present were her father, George Patchim (sic), who recently celebrated his 93rd birthday, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gale, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hart, son James and daughter Dorothy; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dixon and son Gerald, Clarence Conant and John Cornaire of Potsdam.

Mrs. Hart Celebrates Birthday

Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Priest of Depauville, Mr. and Mrs. F. A. Heyl and Mr. and Mrs. E. E. White and children, Earla Teddy and Carol of Lafargeville and Mr. and Mrs. B. A. Consaul and Mr. and Mrs. Henry O. Bertrand of Clayton, spent Tuesday evening at the Hart farm, the occasion being Mrs. Hart’s birthday. Cards and refreshments were enjoyed.

Mrs. John Longway spent a few days last week with her daughter, Mrs. A. M. Dillenback of Clayton Center.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Dwyer and children of Depauville, were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. C. May.

Mr. and Mrs. Leland Gokey and Mr. and Mrs. Roy Longway spent Monday in Watertown.

93rd Birthday

George Patchin Given Dinner

Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gale entertained at 6 o’clock dinner on Tuesday evening in celebration of the 93rd birthday of her father George Patchin who has resided with them for the past year.

Mr. Patchin is enjoying the best of health and is looking forward to working in his gardens, which occupation he has followed for a number of years. He was born in Clayton Center February 19, 1842.

The dinner guests were Roy Patchin, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hart and son James, Mrs. Emma Hart and Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gale.

Roy Patchin, his oldest grandson recited the following toast:

Here’s to Grandfather who has lived 93 years,
He has seen lots of happiness, sorrow and tears.
But that is the life we all have to live,
So let’s be happy and kind to each other,
Because yesterday is gone and today is another,
And who knows what to-morrow will bring,
So let’s all be happy and joyous and sing --
“Blessed be the tie that binds.”

Mr. Patchin was the recipient of many cards and good wishes for many more happy birthdays.

Mr. and Mrs. Alvah Dillenback gave a party to their friends and neighbors Friday evening, Feb. 6th. Seventy-four were present. Dancing and pedro were indulged in until 4 a.m. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Woodman, Roy Longway and Wm. Dixon, C. Prime and James Gokey acted as callers. Refreshments were served at midnight. When all departed for their homes, they declared Mr. and Mrs. Dillenback royal entertainers.

Byrl Chapman and wife, of Lafargeville, were guests last Tuesday and Wednesday of Mrs. F. D. Orvis.

85TH BIRTHDAY OBSERVED
BY CLAYTON WOMAN

CLAYTON, Jan. 4. -- On December 30 Mrs. Harriet Putnam was given a surprise by her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, it being the 85th anniversary of her birthday. Shortly after noon a dinner was served, covers being laid for 18, the outstanding feature being a beautiful birthday cake of pyramid shape, iced with white icing and cake candies and decorated with 85 candles. The cake was made and presented by Mrs. E. K. Brown, a granddaughter of Mrs. Putnam. Among other gifts she received was a bouquet of carnations, a large basket filled with evergreen moss and bowers, decorated with ribbon; also a framed motto appropriate to the occasion.

On the morning of her birthday Mrs. Putnam made a custard pie, such as none other but mother could make and was greatly enjoyed by the diners. She entered into the spirit of the occasion with as keen a zest as the youngest of the party. Mrs. Putnam is of a truth 85 years young.

Those who were present were: Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Putnam and son Miles, Mr. and Mrs. C. G. Lingenfelter, Mrs. E. K. Brown, J. H. Lingenfelter and sons Everette and Francis, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dwyer, all of Brownville; Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Rice and son Leland, of Glen Park; Mr. and Mrs. Ross Lingenfelter and daughter Ruth, of Watertown, with the guest of honor, Mrs. Harriet Putnam.

Those unable to be present, owing to illness in the family were: Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Halladay and sons Roy and Gerald, of Cape Vincent; also E. K. Brown and daughter Marion, of Brownville.

The day was also the 34th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Rice and the 22nd anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. James Lingenfelter, Mrs. Lingenfelter having passed away in the epidemic of diphtheria in the fall of 1924. Mrs. Putnam received cards from nephews and nieces from Seattle, Wash., Port Huron, Mich., as well as from all the near by towns.

Her 16th Birthday.

About 30 of the young friends of Miss Carrie Reed gathered and surprised her Tuesday p.m. at her home on the Burrs Mills rod to celebrate her 16th birthday. Among the guests was Miss Adah Hart of Clayton who has been visiting relatives here. The evening was spent in music and games, supper being served at 12 o’clock. Several gifts were left. Among them was a handsome toilet set, which was presented by Charles Vary in behalf of the guests.

Felts Mills, Feb. 21 -- On Sunday, Feb. 19, twenty-three relatives of Geo. F. Patchin enjoyed the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Cross, Felts Mills, to help “Grandpa Patchin” celebrate his ninty-first (sic) birthday.

Three children present were George H. Patchin, Black River; Mrs. Emma Hart and Mrs. W. W. Gale, Clayton; the only remaining children of a family of seven. Six grandchildren, Roy Patchin, J. B. Hart, Mrs. C. H. Dixon and George Gale of Clayton; Clarence Patchin and Mrs. Morris Cross of Felts Mills and five great grandchildren, Gerald Dixon, Dorothy and James Hart of Clayton and Howard and Shirley Mary Cross of Felts Mills, were present. Others present were: C. H. Dixon, Mrs. J. B. Hart, W. W. Gale and Mrs. George Gale, Clayton; Mrs. Bella Foley, Watertown; Mrs. George H. Patchin, Black River; and Mrs. Frances Patchin and Morris Cross of Felts Mills.

A feature of the celebration was a beautiful pyramid birthday cake, bearing 91 lighted candles and made by Mrs. Cross.

Mr. Patchin extinguished the candies by three “blows” and was the recipient of many beautiful cards and eight dollars in money.

Felts Mills, Feb. 21. --- George F. Patchin, sr., celebrated his 92nd birthday Monday at the home of his granddaughter, Winifred Patchin Cross with whom he has made his home since the death of his wife in 1926.

Mr. Patchin was born near Clayton Center, Feb. 19, 1842 and there he spent his early life. Other than a few years spent in California and Michigan, the remaining years have been spent in and near Felts Mills. Mr. Patchin taught in the district schools and later followed farming, having retired a few years ago.

He married Mary Donner Dec. 23, 1860 and they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1910. Mrs. Patchin died Feb. 22, 1926. Seven children were born to them. The three living ones are George H. Patchin, Black River and Mrs. Emma Harte (sic) and Mrs. Etta Gale, both of Clayton. There are 20 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Good health is being enjoyed by him. Each summer Mr. Patchin has a large garden which he cares for and delivers fresh vegetables daily to his customers. He has always been a regular attendant of the Methodist church.

Mrs. Cross gave a birthday dinner Sunday in compliment to her grandfather. A huge pyramid birthday cake decorated in pink, green and white with 92 candles and a purse of money was presented to the guest of honor. Roy Patchin gave a toast to which Mr. Patchin responded with a brief speech. At the close of the dinner the 15 members stood and sang “Blest Be the Tie That Binds.”

Present were Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gale, Mr. and Mrs. G. B. Hart, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Dixon and son Gerald, Mr. and Mrs. George Gale and Mrs. Emma Hart.

The table and accessories were decorated in a pink color scheme.

George F. Patchin, former Clayton resident, father of Mrs. W. W. Gale, was honored at a family gathering at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Morris H. Cross at Felts Mills, Friday, Feb. 19, the occasion being his 90th birthday.

The dining table was attractively decorated in the center with a beautiful pink pyramid birthday cake, containing 90, which was made by Mrs. Cross.

Mr. Patchin enjoys good health, is very active, and has a large garden with keeps him busy gardening during the summer months.

His birthday was announced from Cheerio station CKGW, Canada and a birthday telegram was sent to him by grandchildren who reside at Santa Barbara, California. He was the recipient of many cards, good wishes and gifts including a gift from the Methodist Episcopal church which he attended at Felts Mills.

Those present were: George F. Patchin, Felts Mills; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. H. Patchin, Black River; Mr. W. W. Gale, Mrs. Emma Hart, Clayton; Mrs. Fannie Patchin, Felts Mills; Mrs. Isabel Foley, Watertown.

The grandchildren were: Clarence Patchin, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hart, Clayton; and Mr. and Mrs. Morris H. Cross, great grandchildren, Shirley and Howard Cross.

The gathering was dismissed by singing “Nearer my God to Thee,” Mr. Patchin joining in the chorus.

Mr. and Mrs. George Gale were given a birthday dinner in honor of her birthday Tuesday, March 15, at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gale. Covers were laid for six. Present were Mrs. Nella G. Quick, Mrs. Emma Hart, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Gale and Mr. and Mrs. George Gale.

The color scheme decorative for the occasion was pink and white.
