An Old Document.
Syracuse Journal, March 7, 1879
Mr. John Mead has in his possession a memento of the War of 1812, in the
form of a “muster and inspection return” made out by his father, Captain
Michael Mead, dated at “Oswego Garrison, Sept. 1, 1812.” Captain Mead
commanded a company raised at Salina and Liverpool which was in the service
about two years, at both Oswego and Sacket’s Harbor. Daniel Ayre was
Lieutenant and Handley Lamb, Ensign. The roll - made entirely with a pen -
contains the names of sixty officers and men. Many of the names are borne by
people in this locality who, no doubt, are descendants. Captain Mead was
well known and universally esteemed in Syracuse, where he died in 1849.
