Albany, N. Y. Evening Journal, Albany, Dec. 7, 1840 (taken from Jefferson Co. Carthagenian)

OUR BANISHED COUNTRYMEN

It is now time to think of our distant friends and neighbors, who are suffering all the horrors of a life of slavery, under British tyranny at Van Dieman’s Land. The good feeling of our nature should now should be exerted to its greatest stretch to procure the release of the unfortunate prisoners taken at Prescott---and what is done should be done quickly, that their sufferings may be of less duration. Therefore tens of thousands on this northern frontier who would spare no pains, trouble or expense in this benevolent and praiseworthy labor. At noon as “Old Tip” takes the Chair, with which his countrymen have so singley honored him, we should be ready to present to him a correct and true statement of each prisoner’s case, and ask him aid, as a man, if not as President, to assist us in the noble work of delivering our neighbors from degradation and slavery; and his good offices we know will be kindly lent in effecting so noble and object. It is worse than labor lost to petition Mr. Van Buren in their behalf---he has no feeling in common with those who suffer in the cause of human liberty. His, is a heart of steel, and has been faithfully tried in this matter, and from him we have nothing to expect, but insult and injury. Men of character should engage in this matter, and not leave so important a matter to profligates, who can carry no influence with them. Let us act, therefore, and quickly too. --- Jefferson Co. Carthagenian.
