*THE COMMUNITIES OF TOWN OF ALEXANDRIA
An Analysis of an 1866 Directory
Theresa, Dec. 29. -- Plessis and Alexandria Bay were about the same size once, and Redwood was considerably more than twice the size of the Bay, shows an old directory.
The directory is for 1866 and gives Alexandria Bay a population of 308. Redwood is listed as having 689. Plessis has three physicians and three clergymen, while Alexandria Bay has one physician and one clergyman. Rev. George Rockwell, Dutch Reform. Plessis at that time had William K. Peck and Lewis Place as blacksmiths. Boots were made by George L. Roof and M. Randall. There were two carriage makers, Silas G. Norton and Henry L. Scott.
The clergymen were: Rev. Henry O. Tilden, Rev. John Crawford, and Rev. Thomas Plato. Mrs. Philinda Comstock and Mrs. Almeda Shaver were listed as dressmakers. The physicians were Loyd (sic) S. Lewis, Sheldon Moak and Eber S. Carlisle. Plessis had a merchant tailor, Mr. Jonas Bidleman, who later removed to Theresa.
There were six merchants listed, four as general and two as sellers of groceries. They were: John S. Vanderburgh, Joseph Fayel, Alexander Augsbury, Ferdinand Fairman, Daniel Roof and Matthew Avery. Amaziah P. Ellis was hotel keeper while Morgan Augsbury was postmaster. There were to sawmills, two shingle mills, a grist mill, three milliners, a hide and leather dealer, surveyor and an undertaker.
The village of Redwood had a bakery conducted by Charles Kavanaugh, and an ashery run by William W. Butterfield. Redwood had four blacksmiths, William Butterfield, Peter Tassey, Thomas Coonan and Lewis Brusse. There were three shoe and bookmaker, Michael Ryan, Christian Ahles and Frederick Ahles. Three men made carriages, Charles W. Clark, Harry K. White, and Lewis Martin. There were three physicians, Robert Clink, Nathan J. Hutchins and Jason T. Milard (sic). George A. Hartman was the tailor and Daniel Becker was the cloth dresser. The village had two coopers, Lemuel Russell and Stephen Labar. There were two hotels. There were eight merchants, a harness maker, sawmills, planing mills, a tinsmith and a glass factory there.
