Joyce Gale Strain, 58, of 281 Oak Grove St., died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, in North west Medical Center at Franklin. Born March 14, 1941, in Bennington, Okla., she was a daughter of Roy David and Ollie LOCKE GAHR. Mrs. Strain had lived in the Golden, Colo., area for many years before returning to Oil City. She had lived in the Oil City area since 1987. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Stain enjoyed camping, gardening, cooking and her three pets, Chelsea, Max and Missy. She first was married Oct. 5, 1957, to Arley J. SMITH of Oil City, He died Jan. 30, 1981. She then was married May 8, 1982, to J.D. Strain of Tulsa, Okla. He survives in Oil City. Also surviving are two sons, Philip J. Smith and his wife, Tammy, of Golden, Colo., and David E. Smith of Oil City; two daughters, Jacqueline BUCHOLZ and her husband, Patrick, of Seneca and Julie HABERMAN and her husband, Steven, of Arvada, Colo.; 11 grandchildren, Jennifer L. Smith of Orlando, Fla., who was raised by Mrs. Strain and her husband in Oil City, Erin and Greg EGAN of Seneca, Jessica SHOEMAKE and Paige HABERMAN of Arvada, Colo., Bryan, Cierra and Hillary Smith of Golden, Colo., Shanon Rinker and Gary and Roy David Smith of Oil City. She also is survived by a brother, Roy David Gahr of Olkmulgee, Okla. She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Hutchinson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Capt. James Foley of the Oil City Salvation Army officiating. Interment will be in Cherrytree Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oil City Salvation Army.

Cornelia M. McDowell Hillburg, 86, of Smethport RD 1, formerly of Melbourne, Fla., a native of Rockland, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, in Sena-Kean Manor in Smethport. Born Oct. 12, 1913, in Rockland, she was a daughter of Dr. Samuel Wesley and Melda PRYOR McDowell. Mrs. Hillburg was a clothing designer. She first was married in Mercer on March 11, 1935, to Donald Earl DAVIES, who died April 1, 1949. She then was married in Franklin on Nov. 23, 1956, to DeForrest P. Hillburg, who died Jan. 17, 1994. Surviving are a son, Donald M. Davies of Smethport; a daughter, Jon Davies of Severna Park, Md.; five grandchildren, Susan WALTERS and Sally MARBICH, both of Franklin, Anne HAGGERTY and Jon Genevieve DEAN, both of Maryland, and Michael Davies of Cyclone; and four great-grandchildren, Sara and Daniel Marbich of Franklin, Crystal Davies of Big Shanty and Debra Davies of Cyclone. She also is survived by a brother, Donald Keith McDowell of Texas; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and two husbands, she was preceded in death by eight brothers and eight sisters. The Gary K. Drum Funeral Home, 2 Bank St., Smethport, is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Rockland Cemetery, Venango County.

Gaylord H. '' Scooter'' Glenn, 84, of Church Street, Harrisville, died at 3:40 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, at his residence following a brief illness. Born Sept. 6, 1915, in Harrisville, he was a son of Chester M. and Sarah H. CARR Glenn. He was a lifelong resident of Harrisville. Mr. Glenn was a 1933 graduate of Harrisville High School. He served in the Pennsylvania National Guard. Mr. Glenn worked for 37 years as a machinist at Cooper-Bessemer in Grove City, retiring in 1977. Prior to that he worked at Brenneman Hardware in Harrisville. He was a member of Bethel Presbyterian Church in Slippery Rock Township and was a former elder in the church. He was a member of the Slippery Rock Grange and the Slippery Rock AARP. Mr. Glenn was married Sept. 15, 1934, to Amber L. HUTCHISON, who survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Leon E. (Norma Lea) THOMPSON of Slippery Rock, Mrs. Burdette W. (Waneeta G.) KELLY of Harrisville and Mrs. Sturgis E. (Susan J.) SHIPLEY of Struthers, Ohio; one son and his wife, Chester M. and Deborah L. Glenn of Harrisville; nine grand children and 11 great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a sister, Ethel WIGTON of Ellwood City; and a brother, Clair A. Glenn of Butler. Edward L. Glosser, 58, of Leeper HCR 1, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, in Clarion Hospital. Born Nov. 18, 1941, in Lucinda, he was a son of Frederick S. and Margaret W. COWLES Glosser. Mr. Glosser worked briefly at the Marienville Glass Co. before he entered the U.S. Navy for three years, having served on the USS DesMoines. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving with the 101st Air borne Division. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam, earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Sgt. 1st Class Glosser was the Army recruiter for several years in the Oil City and Clarion areas, retiring after 21 years of service. Upon his retirement, he worked for Car Mate in Leeper. Mr. Glosser also worked as a tractor-trailer driver for Ron Glosser of Shippenville and Kephart of Clearfield. He owned and operated his own semi tractor-trailer and retired from that business in 1998. He was married Oct. 10, 1970, to Evelyn RODGERS of Shippenville. She survives. Also surviving are one son, Steven E. Glosser of Shippenville; and one daughter, Melinda Rena Glosser of Shippenville. He also is survived by three brothers, Frederick A. Glosser and Ronald E. Glosser, both of Shippenville, and Thomas S. Glosser of Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Patricia GATESMAN of Erie, Mrs. Glenn (Delores) BEST of Union City and Mrs. Joseph (Donna) CAMPBELL of Pittsburgh; one good friend, Shirley Bradley of Leeper; numerous nieces and nephews; and numerous greatnieces and great-nephews. Walter B. '' Tubby'' Cyphert, 92, of Chestnut Street, Clarion, died Friday, Nov. 19, 1999, at Allegheny Valley Hospital in Natrona Heights. Born Jan. 28, 1907, in Kingsville, Clarion County, he was a son of Barton and Gertrude SMITH Cyphert. Mr. Cyphert was district inspector for the State Public School Building Authority until his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clarion, Clarion Masonic Lodge No. 277, F. & A.M., Coudersport Consistory, Clarion American Legion and Clarion Senior Citizens Club. Mr. Cyphert enjoyed golf and bowling. He first was married to Wanda RADER, who died in 1930. He later married Ruth McCAMANT, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Boyd (Mary) WOLFGANG of Vandergrift; four grandchildren, Ronald and William Wolfgang and Susan NICHOLAS, all of Vandergrift, and Cathy STOVER of Fayetteville, Ga.; five great-grandchildren; one great-greatgrandson; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and first wife, Mr. Cyphert was pre ceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Dale and Glenn Cyphert; and two sisters, Rebecca and Beuleh. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Goble Funeral Home of Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home with Don Dininny of the First Baptist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Clarion Cemetery. Marian Georgetta Sampsell Carrier, 79, formerly of Oil City and Highland Oaks, Shippenville, died Saturday evening, Nov. 20, 1999, in Beverly Healthcare-Clarion, where she resided. Born June 10, 1920, in Oil City, she was a daughter of John Frank and Clara Belle STEVENSON Sampsell. Mrs. Carrier was a faithful Christian throughout her life and supported the Red Cross and children's hunger prevention organizations worldwide. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Carrier was married in Christ Episcopal Church, Oil City, Nov. 1, 1941, to Stanley George Carrier Sr., who died April 1, 1979. Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Carol Carrier STEINHEBEL, and a son, Stanley George Carrier Jr., both of San Leandro, Calif., and both of whom resided in Oil City during their younger years; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. She also is survived by two brothers, Archibald Sampsell of Girard and Robert Sampsell of Corry; and two sisters, Evelyn LYTLE of Oil City and Dorothy WHITE of Franklin. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Carrier was preceded in death by two brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the First Presbyterian Church of Clarion. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the church with the Rev. Thelma K. Hoffman, 91, formerly of Harrisville RD 1, died Sunday, Nov. 21, 1999, in Slippery Rock Personal Care Home where she had resided for the past four years. Prior to moving to Slippery Rock, she had lived in the Harrisville area for more than 50 years, moving there from Smith field, W.Va. Born Feb. 15, 1908, in Wetzel, W.Va., she was a daughter of Walter C. and Anna Erigay HILEMAN PHIPPS. She was a graduate of Smithfield High School in Smithfield, W.Va. Mrs. Hoffman had been a cook for 19 years at Victory School. She was a member of Calvary Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Harrisville and was a former member of Wesley Methodist Church. Mrs. Hoffman was a member of the Wesley Grange and the Clintonville Women's Club. She was married in Maryland on Sept. 9, 1926, to John Earl Hoffman, who is deceased. Surviving are one son, Paul E. Hoffman of Harrisville; two grandchildren, David E. Hoffman and his wife, Holly Haldeman Hoffman, of Fenton, Mich., and Diana L. Hoffman of Oil City; and four great-grandchildren, David, Jacob, Michael and Andrew Hoffman of Fenton, Mich. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Hoffman was pre ceded in death by a brother, Glenn Phipps; and three sisters, Goldia GARLAND, Eva CLOVIS and Opal BONNELL. Dorothy P. Donahue, 95, a resident of Beverly Healthcare Titusville for the past year and a half and a former Pleasantville resident, died at 1:30 p.m. Fri day, Nov. 19, 1999, in Titusville Area Hospital. Born May 10, 1904, in Cranberry Township, Venango County, she was a daughter of Henry and Catherine DOUGLAS PERRETT. Mrs. Donahue graduated April 14, 1919, from Welch's Business College, Oil City. She formerly worked for six years at Petroleum Telephone Co., Pennzoil for two years and Pleasantville Borough as a tax collector for 36 years, holding that position from 1958 to 1994. Mrs. Donahue was a member of Pleasantville United Methodist Church. She was a former member of Pleasantville Lioness Club and former secretary for Pleasantville Borough Council. She was recognized by the Pennsylvania State Senate on her 90th birthday. Mrs. Donahue was married in Oil City July 3, 1931, to Thomas C. Donahue, who died May 16, 1957. Surviving are two children and their spouses, Diane and Charles BELL of Columbus, Ohio, and Thomas and Beverly Donahue of Woodbury, N.J.; seven grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Opal THOMAS of Detroit, Mich.; a brother, Reid D. Perrett of Bugtown Road, Pleasantville; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Donahue was preceded in death by a sister, Beulah MASTERS; and four brothers, Eugene Perrett, Richard Perrett, Homer Perrett and Clifford Perrett. Mary Bolton Webb, 99, of New Bethlehem, formerly of Branchville, Va., Southampton County, died Sunday morning, Nov. 21, 1999, in Jefferson Manor Nursing Home in Brookville. Born Dec. 6, 1899, in Southampton County, Virginia, she was a daughter of J.Q. and Mary Ellen ROSE Bolton. Mrs. Webb married Hershel Webb, a successful peanut farmer in Southampton County. The Webbs moved to New Bethlehem in June 1979 and Mr. Webb died in December of that year. She was a member of Branchville Baptist Church where she was very active, serving as Sunday School teacher, pianist and organist. She played a major role in the construction of a new center of worship. She also belonged to First Baptist Church of New Bethlehem. In addition to being a homemaker and mother, Mrs. Webb served at a local bank in Branchville and was named postmaster of the Town of Branchville by the late President Franklin D. Roosevelt. She retired from that post after 30 years of dedicated service. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Barbara ANDREWS of New Bethlehem; two granddaughters and their husbands, Susan and Bruce ROSENDAHL of Key Largo, Fla., and Sally and Paul BARBEE of Ruther Glen, Va.; and three great-grand children, Tana Rosendahl of Jamestown, N.Y., Andrew Rosendahl of Miami, Fla., and Paul Barbee III of Ruther Glen, Va. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Webb was preceded in death by a sister; three brothers; and her son-in-law, Tom T. Andrews. Clarion News, Monday, November 22, 1999: MELVIN E. HEPLER PUNXSUTAWNEY -- Melvin E. "Muz" Hepler, 78, of Punxsutawney, formerly of Distant and a bus driver in Clarion County for 50 years, died at 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, November 9, 1999, in Punxsutaney Area Hospital.
