Catherine E. Lumley Black, 88, a resident of Hillview Manor, 2801 Ellwood Road, New Castle, for the past five years, died at 9:10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, after an extended illness. She formerly resided at 42 Bryson Mill Road, New Castle. Born June 11, 1911, in Fenelton, Butler County, she was a daughter of Robert and Hatti THOMPSON LUMLEY. Mrs. Black was a member of Clifton Flats Missionary Alliance Church in New Castle. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Black was married to Raymond W. Black, who died July 30, 1990. Surviving are two daughters, Norma Jean PARKER of Polk and Elaine CALLAHAM of New Castle; one son, Norman R. Black of New Castle; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by one sister, Hazel BOWERS of Brent; and two brothers, Dubbs Lumley of Brent and Roy Lumley of Harrisville. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Black was preceded in death by three brothers, George Lumley, Ralph Lumley and John Lumley. The Smith Funeral Home, Village of Leesburg, 1778 Perry Highway, Volant, is in charge of arrangements. There will be no public visitation. Private funeral services will be held Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Fats Cubellis of Mahoningtown officiating. Interment will be in North Plain Grove Cemetery, Plain Grove Township, Lawrence County. Memorial contributions may be made to Hillview Manor, 2801 Ellwood Road, New Castle, Pa. 16101.

Jean Davis Buchanan, 85, of Akron, Ohio, formerly of Franklin, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, in Akron City Hospital. Mrs. Buchanan had resided in Akron for the past four years. Born Sept. 16, 1914, in Franklin, she was a daughter of James Evan DAVIS and Jessie McMILLAN Davis. Mrs. Buchanan was of the Mormon faith. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, James E. and Debra Buchanan of Akron; a daughter, Joanne HILDEBRANDT of Las Vegas, Nev.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter. There will be no services. Burial will be in the Crestview Cemetery, Grove City. The Hopkins-Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, Ohio, is in charge of arrangements.

John W. McCrea, 68, of Mount Lebanon, formerly of Oil City, died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at his residence. Born Dec. 3, 1930, in Oil City, he was a son of Col. Earle D. and Lois M. STANLEY McCrea. Mr. McCrea was a 1948 graduate of Oil City High School and a 1952 graduate of Allegheny College, Meadville, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army from December 1953 to February 1956, attaining the rank of private first class. Mr. McCrea served as a pension plan administrator for Westinghouse Corp. for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. Surviving are one son, John McCrea Jr. and his wife, Robbie, of Lebanon; three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Steve DOBIES of Oakdale, Janet and Tom LUKETICH of Hudson, Ohio, and Jennifer and Tim BARENDSE of St. Louis, Mo.; and eight grandchildren, Michael McCrea of Lebanon, Katherine, Thomas and Alexander Luketich of Hudson, Ohio, and Andrew, Benjamin, Emily and Carolyn Dobies of Oakdale. Also surviving are one brother, Earle McCrea of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and three sisters, Frances E. McCrea of Meadville, Ruth A. GORDON of Lakewood, N.Y., and Jean MOORE of Jamestown, N.Y. Mr. McCrea was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dorothy McCrea of Meadville. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Osenider Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home with the Rev. Janice C. Duncan, rector of Christ Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. The family suggests memorials be made to Christ Episcopal Church.

Geraldine '' Jerri'' Meier Sefton of Phoenix, Ariz., a former Clarion businesswoman, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in Phoenix following an extended illness. Born in Ashland Township, she was a daughter of Jesse and Mildred Meier. Mrs. Sefton opened and operated Jerri's Dress Shop in Clarion and after selling the business, moved with her family from Clarion to Phoenix in July of 1967. She was a member of the Clarion Chamber of Commerce and was the first woman elected president of that organization. She also was involved in many community functions. Mrs. Sefton was married in Sligo July 22, 1955, to Kenneth W. Sefton, who died in April 1973. Surviving are two daughters, Geri Ann Sefton and Mrs. Patrick J. (Nancy) McNAMARA, both of Phoenix, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Tammy McNamara of Phoenix; and a niece, Janet Meier ZEIGLER of Clarion RD. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Sefton was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Meier of Sligo. A private service was held Monday, Sept. 27, at Green Aces Cemetery in Phoenix.

James Lewis Mitchell, 72, of Hartford, Tenn., a Utica native, died Friday, Nov. 5, 1999, in the Veterans Hospital in Johnson City, Tenn. Born May 28, 1927, in Utica, he was a son of Ray V. and Daisy BOUGHNER Mitchell. Mr. Mitchell was a 1945 graduate of Franklin High School. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Mitchell was retired from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources where he was employed as a chemist. He was a member of D.A.V. Post 102 of Newport, Tenn., was a 32nd Degree Mason and was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 17. Mr. Mitchell was a member and an elder of the Newport Presbyterian Church in Newport, Tenn. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Diane LANG Mitchell; three daughters and their husbands, Sally and Rob JENNINGS of Birmingham, Ala., Monajane and David LIPPITT of Dacula, Ga., and Jenalee and Chuck THOMPSON of Marietta, Ga.; a son and daughterin-law, Ray K. and Cindy Mitchell of Lawrenceville, Ga.; and 10 grandchildren, Lindsay, Leslie, Ally and RJ Jennings, Tim and Kyleen Mitchell, Katie and Addy Lippitt and Charles and Sara Thompson. He also is survived by a sister, Daisy GILMORE of Port Arthur, Texas; a brother and his wife, Charles and Ann Mitchell of Neederland, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Mitchell was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis EDMONDS. Funeral services were conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Newport Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Union Cemetery in Newport, Tenn., where military rites were conducted by the D.A.V. Post 102 of Newport. The family requests memorial donations be made to the D.A.V. Post 102, P.O.
