The Progress News, Tuesday, November 2, 1999: DONNA CARLSON FUNFER Donna Carlson Funfer, 71, formerly of Butler and Eau Claire, died at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Orchard Manor in Grove City. She had been ill for nearly 20 years. Born in Butler, March 22, 1928, she was the daughter of Clayton and Edna ZIMMERMAN CARLSON. In her early years, she had worked at her mother's restaurant, Carlson's Lunch Diner, in Eau Claire. She later was a personal healthcare services provider in Arizona. She was a Catholic. Surviving are a son, John "Bill" Funfer of West Sunbury, two brothers, John "Jack" Carlson of Clearfield and James Carlson, of Kennerdell; two grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. Her husband, John A. Funfer, and a brother preceded her in death. There was no public visitation. Privated funeral services and burial were held at the Eau Claire Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Arrangement were handled by H. Jack Buzard Funeral Home, Eau Claire. Debra E. '' Debbie'' Spence Pereira, 49, of Brewer Place, Westfield, N.Y., formerly of Oil City, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in her residence. Born July 22, 1950, in Oil City, she was a daughter of Richard and Beatrice N. SOLLE Spence. She resided for 20 years in Westfield. Mrs. Pereira attended school in Oil City, Robert Morris College and Jamestown Community College where she earned an AAS in both business and human services. She worked as a waitress with her late husband, John Pereira, who was a chef at the former Kelly Hotel in Ripley, The Bark Grill and the former Portage Inn, both of Westfield. Her husband died May 10, 1996. Mrs. Pereira greatly enjoyed children and was employed for the past 10 years by the Westfield School District as a teacher's aide, retiring this past school year due to ill health. She had worked at Westfield Academy and Central Schools. She was active with the Rainbow Bereavement Council of the school district. Mrs. Pereira was a member of St. James Major Roman Catholic Church where she had been an active Sunday school teacher. She also was a member of Eta Beta Sorority of Westfield. She enjoyed gardening and her home had an open door policy to many of the youth of Westfield. Surviving are a son, Joshua Pereira at home; and two daughters, Kendra Pereira BILLS of West field, N.Y., and Jessica N. Pereira at home. She also is survived by her mother, Beatrice N. Spence of Oil City; and a brother, Gary R. Spence of Oil City. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her father in 1979. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Ma son Funeral Home, 37 Clinton St., Westfield, N.Y. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. James Major Roman Catholic Church, 15 Union St., Westfield, N.Y. The Rev. Richard Flaherty, O.F.M., of Saint Bonaventure University will preside. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Oil City. Memorials for the family may be made in care of the funeral home. Charles Donald '' Chuck'' Brand, 56, of Kellettville, died Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, at his home. Born Nov. 2, 1942, in Detroit, Mich., he was a son of John and Virginia REESE SABO, who survive in Campbell, Ohio. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Brand was employed for the last 13 years by GPU Energy in Oil City. He was married in Wampum March 14, 1964, to Arlene Chrissman, who survives. Surviving, in addition to his parents and wife, are a son, Charles Donald '' Chuck'' Brand Jr., and a daughter, Cheri Brand, both of Erie; many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Norman J. Wimer Funeral Home, Tionesta. Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home with the Rev. Randy L. Evans, pastor of the Tionesta Church of God, officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of one's choice.

Howard T. Clark, 79, of Corsica, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in DuBois Regional Medical Center. Born Oct. 11, 1920, in Union Township, Jefferson County, he was a son of Albert and Agnes AARON Clark. Mr. Clark was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Air Corps in the American theater. He was a retired employee of the Pennsylvania Bureau of State Parks where he worked as a construction engineer. Mr. Clark was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Brookville, the Clarion VFW and the Strattanville American Legion. He was the oldest active member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 983 of Brookville, having be longed there for 58 years. He was married in California July 1, 1945, to LuElla GEARHART, who survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Patsy Lou) CONANT of Mesa, Ariz., and Mrs. Donald (Peggy Lee) CARPER of Corsica; two grandchildren; two great-grand children; two stepgrandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren. He also is survived by a brother, Arthur Clark of Corsica; and two sisters, Anna Mae THEISS of Sharon and Jane MOHNEY of Corsica. In addition to his parents, Mr. Clark was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Clark; and an infant sister, Mary Alice Clark. Wilbur D. '' Bill'' Cotterman, 73, of Franklin Star Route, died at 3:29 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the emergency room of Northwest Medical Center at Franklin. Born Oct. 30, 1926, in Hannaville, he was a son of Walter '' Red'' and Leona ORR-PRESSLER Cotterman. He was a tech sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. Cotterman retired Nov. 1, 1988, from Joy Manufacturing after 33 1/3 years as a machinist. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Mr. Cotterman was married Dec. 6, 1952, to Rose JOHNSON, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Staff Sgt. Jeffrey David Cotterman of Camp LaJeune, N.C.; a brother, Clifford Cotterman of Linesville; an aunt, Ruth DEETER of Franklin; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cotterman was preceded in death by two brothers, Virgil Cotterman and Wayne Cotterman. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Robert W. Interment will be in Peters Cemetery. LEO A. KENDZIOR Leo A. Kendzior, 82, of 17 Deer St., died at 1:35 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, at his residence following an extended illness. Born June 28, 1917, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was a son of John and Helen WYDRO Kendzior. At an early age, his family moved back to Oil City where he attended Oil City schools. Mr. Kendzior was employed as an insulator at the Koppers Plant in Rouseville for 33 years, retiring in 1980. He had held the position of president, vice president and chief steward of the OCAW at Koppers during his tenure there. He was an active member of St. Joseph Church where he had been an usher for 35 years and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was one of the founders of the Primetimers of the parish. Mr. Kendzior was a life member of the Polish National Alliance, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Knights of Columbus and the Fourth Degree Assembly of the Knights of Columbus. He was married in St. Joseph Church April 19, 1949, to Rose M. CAPANARO, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, John Kendzior and his wife, Kathleen, of Rochester, N.Y., and Greg Kendzior of Akron, Ohio; and two grandsons, Phillip Kendzior of Charlotte, N.C., and David Kendzior of Rochester, N.Y. He also is survived by a brother, Frank Kulasza of Oil City; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Kendzior was preceded in death by two brothers, Matthew '' Lefty'' Kendzior and Thomas Kulasza. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in the Reinsel Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Joseph Church with the Rev. John W. Swoger, pastor, as the presider. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Church Development Fund.

Ruth Ebbert Walker, 85, formerly of Tippery, died at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, 1999, in the Oil City Presbyterian Home where she had been a resident. Born Feb. 16, 1914, in Cold Water, Mineral Township, she was a daughter of Clarence "Andy'' and Katie HENDREN EBBERT. Mrs. Walker was a 1931 graduate of Rocky Grove High School. She was married Aug. 27, 1938, to John Downing Walker, who survives. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Walker worked at Quaker State Oil Refining Corp. and Oil Well Supply Co. in Oil City. During the war, she returned to work at Oil Well Supply and later at Pennsylvania Grade Crude Oil Association. Following the war, the Walkers moved to Bradford. After her children were raised, Mrs. Walker returned to work as parish assistant at the First United Methodist Church in Bradford and later as executive director of the Bradford Chapter of the American Red Cross. During those years, she also hosted a homemakers program twice a week over radio station WESB in Bradford. In 1973, Mrs. Walker and her husband moved to Fertigs where she was an active member of the Fertigs United Methodist Church. While living in Fertigs, she worked for several years as executive director of the Oil City Chapter of the American Red Cross. In 1996, they moved to Tippery to make their home with their daughter and her husband, Ann and James Pollock. Surviving, in addition to her husband, are one daughter, Ann, and her husband, James POLLOCK of Tippery; two sons and their wives, James and Marcia Walker of Union Bridge, Md., and Thomas and Sandra Walker of Burbank, Calif.; eight grandchildren, John Walker, Kenneth Walker, Kathryn BORRA, Deborah Pollock, Kathrine Pollock, Thomas Pollock, Ian Walker and Morgan Walker; and three greatgrandchildren, Jesse PALMER, Aaron Walker and Sabrina Borra. Also surviving are three brothers, Robert Ebbert of Oil City, Walter Ebbert of Reno and Harold Dean Ebbert of Stoneboro; and four sisters, Margaret PRICHARD and Hazel Ebbert, both of Seneca, Mrs. John (Clara) MITCHELL of Franklin and Sarah Walker of Michigan. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Walker was preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth LeRoy Ebbert and John Ebbert; and a sister, Ina CULP. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Morrison Funeral Home, Oil City. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday in the first floor social room of the Oil City Presbyterian Home. The Rev. James E. Bartholomew, pastor of the Fertigs United Methodist Church, will officiate. Interment will be in the Heckathorn Cemetery. The family suggests memorials be sent to the Fertigs United Methodist Church, RD 1, Venus, Pa. 16364; the American Red Cross; or to the Oil City Presbyterian Home.

John Hunter Lyons, 62, of Cottageville, S.C., formerly of Oil City, died Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, in his residence. Mr. Lyons was born in Oil City, the son of Thomas C. Lyons and Florence HUNTER Lyons. He was a 1956 graduate of Oil City High School and also was a graduate of Charleston Southern University. Mr. Lyons was a retired Air Force technical sergeant and was awarded the Vietnam Service Metal. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving are his wife, Edith Mae SMITH Lyons, of Cottageville, S.C.; two daughters, Dawn M. CORNATZER of Cottageville and Linda M. BARNES of Bossier City, La.; and five grandchildren. He also is survived by his mother of Tampa, Fla.; and a sister, Connie FRITZ of Jacksonville, Fla. Burial was in Plantation Memorial Gardens, Moncks Corner, S.C.

K.C. Nunemaker , 16, of 20552 State Highway 8, Centerville, an 11th grade student at Maplewood High School, died Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, from injuries received in a one-vehicle accident in Plum Township, Venango County.

Thomas W. Pyle Sr., 85, of Grand Valley RD 1, died at 8:45 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 31, 1999, in the Warren Manor. Born March 29, 1914, in Franklin, he was a son of Harry and Maude ARBUCKLE Pyle. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He also served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Pyle was a former farmer. He originally retired from Fisher & Young where he was a high lift operator. He last was employed by Cytemp Steel in the security department. He was a member of the Cleo J. Ross American Legion Post No. 368 and the Tidioute VFW Post. Mr. Pyle enjoyed working in his yard and pitching horseshoes. He was married in Franklin April 14, 1934, to the former Mary BARNES, who survives. Also surviving are three sons, Thomas Pyle of Grand Valley RD 1, Clinton Pyle and his wife, Sandy, of Wilmington, N.C., and Jerry Pyle and his wife, Linda, of Youngsville; four daughters, Mrs. Gene (Margaret) CEVAER of Branford, Fla., Mrs. Terry (Beverly) STOVER of Garland, Mrs. Jeff (Mary) FARGO of Erie and Barbara Pyle of Grand Valley RD 1; several grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He also is survived by one brother, Leonard Pyle of Angola, N.Y. In addition to his parents, Mr. Pyle was preceded in death by one daughter, Nancy LEWIS; four grandchildren; six bothers, Earl Pyle, Melvin Pyle, James Pyle, Gus Pyle, Earnest Pyle and John Pyle; and two sisters, Mrs. Maude STANTON and Mrs. Erma PETERSON.
