Walter Leroy "Roy" Hockman, 96, of Cranberry, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Beverly Healthcare-Oil City. Born Jan. 26, 1903, in Apollo, he was a son of the late William and Mae SNYDER Hockman. Mr. Hockman moved to the Oil City area when he was nine. He was a dairy farmer in his early years, and later, he was a self-employed painter and carpenter. He was a member of First Free Methodist Church in Oil City. He enjoyed watching religious programs on Sunday--including Billy Graham--and reading his Bible. Mr. Hockman was first married in 1928 to the former Lila Rose OAKES in Jamestown, N.Y. She preceded him in death on March 1, 1976. He later married Susan KELCHNER in 1979, and she preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 1981. Surviving are two daughers, Mrs. Charles (Carolyn) RITHMAN of Cranberry and Norma CONFER of Cranberry, with whom he made his home since 1992; and one brother, Howard Hockman of Cranberry. Also surviving are 12 granddaughters, one grandson, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and two wives, he was preceded in death by two sons, Walter L. Hockman Jr. and Gale Hockman; two daughters, Janet BROWER and Joyce Hockman; four brothers and six sisters. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Funeral home with the Rev. Byron R. Oakes, a brother-in-law of Mr. Hockman, officiating. Oakes was raised by Mr. Hockman and his wife, Lila. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Area Agency on Aging or the Visiting Nurses Association of Venango County.
Paul E. Whitehill, 86, of Knox, died at 1:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at the home of his sister, Kathryn E. LAUFFER, following a short illness. Born June 17, 1913, in Philadelphia, he was a son of Charles A. and Elizabeth HANST Whitehill. Mr. Whitehill was a graduate of Shippenville High School. He earned a bachelor's degree from Clarion University and a master's degree from Columbia University, and he had a year of advanced study at Harvard. Mr. Whitehill was a teacher at Sligo, Ludlow and Coudersport. He spent the greater part of his career in Olean, N.Y., and retired from there in 1966. Mr. Whitehill and his wife returned to Knox following his retirement. He was first married to Amolia WENSTRAN, who preceded him in death in 1942. He was married again Aug. 25, 1948, to Maybelle MYERS. She preceded him in death on Oct. 18, 1997. Mr. Whitehill was very active in the Knox Lions Club, where he was a past president and past secretary. He also published a monthly newsletter and chaired the sight committee for more than 20 years. He received the Melvin Jones award and the Honor Roll of Lions in addition to many other local Lions awards. Mr. Whitehill also served on the Knox Public Library board, assisted the Boy Scouts and belonged to the Knox Nature Club. He worked with the Campfire Girls and the Torch Club while in Olean. He enjoyed reading, woodworking and gardening. Mr. Whitehill is survived by a sister, Kathryn E. Lauffer of Knox. He was preceded in death by his parents and wives. Zula I. Buzard, 90, of Siegel RD 1, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at Brookville Hospital. Born Jan 31, 1909, in Hawthorne, Clarion County, she was a daughter of Clyde and Carrie BROCIOUS MILLER. She was married April 26, 1933, in Brookville to Ray Buzard, who survives. Mrs. Buzard was employed as an operator and supervisor for Bell Telephone of Pa. from 1930 to 1970. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Siegel Homemakers, Kahletown Community Church and Telephone Pioneers of America. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Buzard is survived by one daughter, Sue MARTONIK of Pittsburgh; one granddaughter, Susan SUSIE; and several nieces. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Buzard was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers. Allen Rhines Pfaff, 60, of Jacksonville, Fla., formerly of Oil City, died Monday Oct. 25, 1999, at his home following a brief illness. He was born Dec. 3, 1938, in Oil City and resided at Jacksonville Beach for more than 28 years. Mr. Pfaff was a member of the Morroco Temple, the Royal Order of Jesters and the J. Wendell Fargis Lodge #356 F&AM. Mr. Pfaff is survived by his wife of 36 years, Lillian Pfaff; his mother Evelyn ROTH of Atlantic Beach, Fla.; two daughters, Kimerlee Tena AMATO and her husband Paul, of Roswell, Ga., and Valerie Ann SCROGINS and her husband, Bill, of Atlantic Beach; and four grandson, Anthony Paul and Scott Allan Amato and Benjamin James and Luke Palmer Scrogins. Paul Joseph Garey, 67, of Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at his residence. Born Nov. 13, 1931, in Pittsburgh, he was a son of Joseph C. and Anna M. (GUETTHEFF) Garey. On June 24, 1972, he married Edna (CAREY) Garey and she survives. Mr. Garey was a security guard for Firm Security Systems. He served in the Army from 1953 to 1955. Mr. Garey was a member of American Legion Post 5 in Pittsburgh and of the St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Pittsburgh. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two brothers-in-law, John R. Carey of Pittsburgh and James F. Carey of California. Friends will be received from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in the Goble Funeral Home of Clarion. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion with the Rev. Frank Przepierski officiating.
