Albert G. Roode, M.D., 87, of 219 Five Points Road, Utica, died at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, 1999, at Sugar Creek Station. Born April 2, 1912, in Donora, he was the fifth of 10 children to the late Archie F. Roode and Sarah (SPEAKMAN) Roode. During the Great Depression, he worked his way through Muskingum College and then through medical school at Western Reserve, now Case Western Reserve Medical School. He graduated from medical school in June 1939. He had lived in the Polk/Utica area the past 37 years. He worked for the Polk State School and Hospital from 1962 to 1975. He then became an emergency room physician at the Franklin Hospital, from where he retired in 1982. On June 11, 1939, right after his medical school graduation, Dr. Roode married Ruth Esther GOEHRING. They were married for 55 years. She preceded him in death on Dec. 14, 1994. He was a member of the Polk Presbyterian Church. In 1946, he and his family went to Sudan, Africa, as medical missionaries for the United Presbyterian Church. He served in that capacity until 1962, when all missionaries were expelled from Sudan because of a civil and religious war. He helped establish and build a new mission station for an untouched tribe which now has seven ordained ministers and thousands of Christians. He served four years as a medical officer in the United States Navy Reserve during World War II. He served combat duty for two years aboard a destroyer in the North Africa and Sicily campaign and then on shore duty for two years at Great Lakes Naval Station. Dr. Roode is survived by two sons, Peter G. Roode, M.D., of Gainesville, Fla., and Philip J. Roode, M.D., of Franklin; a daughter, Janet Roode EARNHARDT of Utica, a sister, Ethel STONE of Brandenton, Fla., seven grandchildren and one great granddaughter. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by son, John Roode, who died at age 17 in a camping accident; four brothers, four sisters; and two infant grandchildren. Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Hutchinson Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Polk Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Alex Wilson, a retired missionary, presiding. Interment will be in the St. John's United Evangelical Protstant Church Cemetery in Rochester. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the charity of one's choice.
Ruth Pauline Winger, 85 formerly of Alcorn Avenue and Riverside Drive, died at 5:50 p.m. Friday, October 15, 1999, at the Oil City Presbyterian Home, where she had been a resident. Born May 1, 1914, in Oil City, she was a daughter of the late Daniel Camel and Mary Elizabeth SAYLOR SCHRUM. On May 3, 1936, she was married to Paul E. Winger, who preceded her in death April 7, 1973. Mrs. Winger was a member of the First Church of God. She was a past president of VFW Auxiliary and a past VFW district president. She is survived by a son, Daniel Winger of Oil City; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Samuel Winger; a daughter, Berta Marie GOULD; two brothers, Charles Schum and Sam Schrum; two sisters, Blanche LONGSTRETH and Anna PORTER; and one grandchild. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Funeral home with the Rev. Mark Hall, pastor of First Church of God, officiating. Interment will be in Lamey Cemetery. The family suggest memorial donations be made to the First Church of God.
