Eleanor L. Daubenspeck, 82, former head librarian of the Oil City Area schools and life-long Emlenton resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 1999, at Wesbury United Methodist Community in Meadville after a lengthy illness Born July 2, 1917, she was a daughter of a local banker, Harry M. Lynn Sr., and Nora GIERING Lynn, both of Emlenton. She was married in 1937 to Paul J. Daubenspeck, a former professional baseball player and Quaker State employee. He preceded her in death in 1976. Widely known as "Mrs. D" to several generations of Oil City High School students, she was widely traveled and had a broad range of educational interests involving area youth. Those included training student librarians from several local colleges. Mrs. Daubenspeck was a former farm wife who went to work after her husband became disabled. She managed the Emlenton High School lunch program for a number of years. She then had a 35-year professional career as a public school librarian at Oil City. While commuting daily to a full-time job and taking college classes at night or during summer sessions, she also provided essential care for several declining family members at the same time. Mrs. Daubenspeck eventually earned a bachelor's degree at Clarion University and a master's degree at the University of Pittsburgh, both in library science. Later, she designed and relocated the senior high library to its present location on Lynch Boulevard in Oil City. Always a bright, energetic person who provided a remarkable example of educational achievement under difficult personal conditions, she thoroughly enjoyed holiday shopping with her granddaughtes in the Seattle area. As a family matriarch with a rollicking personality, she loved to visit Hawaii on short notice. At home, her favorite activities usually involved quilting and reading. Mrs. Daubenspeck is survived by a son, retired Army Maj. Lynn Daubenspeck and his wife, Arden; and two granddaughters, Mrs. Barbara D. HESS of Tacoma, Wash. and Ms. Lynne E. Daubenspect of Steilacoom, Wash. Private funeral services were held Sept. 22, at the Emlenton Cemetery. Arrangements were in charge of the Christopher M. Hile Funeral Home in Emlenton. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Oil City High School Library.
William O. Wilson Sr. 79, of Johnny Diamond Road, Franklin RD 2, died at 4:50 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at his residence Born Dec. 30, 1919, in Dayton, Armstrong County, he was son of John William and Carrie PONTIOUS Wilson. Mr. Wilson was a veteran of the U. S. Army, serving in World War II with the Timber Wolves during the European Theater for five years, seven months. He was employed by Oilwell Supply and then by the Oil City School District as a bus driver, retiring in 1978. Mr. Wilson was a member of the Victory Heights United Breathren Church. He enjoyed fishing, flowers, playing the guitar and being outdoors. On Aug. 18, 1949, he married the former Esther M. HOLLENBAUGH and she survives. In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons and their wives, Bill and Pat Wilson of Meadville, Dave and Debbie Wilson of Oil City and John and Penny Wilson of Seneca; two daughters, Mrs. LeRoy (Mary Ann) HEAVEN of Waterford and Lois Jean Wilson of Seneca; 12 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchldren; and numerious nieces and nephews. He is also survived by two sister, Doris McCLELLAND of Hazelhurst and Sara KING of Texas. In addition to his parents, Mr. Wilson was preceded in death by four brothers. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Roger Overmoyer, pastor of the Victory Heights United Brethren Church, officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Hill Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Hospice, Amerian Cancer Society or the the Victory Heights United Brethren Building Fund.
Travis James Blauser, infant son of Catherine E. WALLS and James A. Blauser of Oil City RD 2, was stillborn at 7 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Northwest Medical Center in Franklin. In addition to his parents, Travis is survived by his maternal grandparents, Charlie and Nancy Walls of Emlenton RD; maternal great-grandfather, Robert E. BEALS of Emlenton RD 1; his paternal great-grandparents, LeRoy and Liz Blauser of Oil City RD 2; his paternal great-great-grandmother, Phyllis PERRY of Cranberry; his paternal great-great-grandfather, Arthur James Blauser of Oil City RD 2; four aunts, Robin Walls of Manheim, Caren Walls of Emlenton RD, Melanie Blauser of Oil City and Tina MYERA of Michigan. Private funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family. The Rev. Ralph Tanner, pastor of the Old Zion United Methodist Church in Emlenton RD 1, will officiate. Interment will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Emlenton RD 1. The David C. McEntire Funeral Home in Knox is in charge of arrangements.
Laurabel E. Cramer, 86, of Polk RD 1, died at 9 a.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the home of her sister, Helen DESKO. ANNA K. MORAN (includes picture) Anna K. Moran, 99, of 703 North St., Oil City, died at 7:10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Northwest Medical Center. Born Feb. 17, 1900, in Oil City, she was a daughter of John and Philamine STELLPFLUG KILROY. Mrs. Moran was an executive secretary for Joseph Barr Sr. and worked for many years at Barr's Insurance. She was a member of the Winnifred Tonkin Guild, the Ladies Hospital Auxiliary and was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. On Nov. 15, 1932, she married Thomas J. Moran Jr. at the Sacred Heart Church in New York City. He preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1987. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret K. DILLON. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Morrison Funeral Home in Oil City. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Stephen Church with the Very Rev. Jeffery J. Noble, VF, as celebrant. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Ralph E. "Burley" Porterfield, 100, of Oil City RD 1, died at 6:50 p.m. Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at The Caring Place in Franklin following a short illness. Born April 10, 1899, in Oil City, he was a son of James B. and Margaret VARNER Porterfield. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oil City. Mr. Porterfield worked at the National Transit Pipeline Company in Oil City for 50 years, retiring in 1964 as the production agent. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also was a sports enthusiast and participated in baseball, football and boxing at the local YMCA in his youth. Mr. Porterfield took pride in having a large garden every year and delivered Meals on Wheels for 10 years. He was a life long member of the Bucktails and the Izaak Waltons. Mr. Porterfield Married the former Helen C. McKEAN Nov. 3, 1926, in the Franklin Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on Jan. 18, 1999. He is survived by four children, James Porterfield and his wife, Abbie of Dempseytown, Norma L. OVIATT and her husband Will of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Margaret P. "Peg" PRICE of Dempseytown and Ralph J. Porterfield and his wife Mary Ann of Cooperstown; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, John Porterfield; three sisters, Ruth CONTINO, Irene P. LAUFFER and Norma HEILER. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Morrison Funeral Home in Oil City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Presbyterian Church in Oil City. Interment will be in Lamey Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the First Presbyterian Chuch or to the Visiting Nurses Association of Venango County.
