Dennis Lehman, a former resident of Oil City along with his wife and son of Mechanicsburg, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 1999, in a plane crash in the Green Mountains near Worcester, Vt. Visiation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday in Mount Calvary Episcopal Church, 125 N. 25th St., Camp Hill. Funeral and committal services for the three members of the Lehman family will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church. Dennis Lewis Lehman, 43, was born Jan. 30, 1956, in Oil City, a son of Paul F. and Lavinia LEWIS Lehman. Mr. Lehman was a graduate of Oil City High School and Thiel College, Greenville. He worked for Price Waterhouse, Inc., in Pittsburgh, Oklahoma and Texas. He also worked for Continental Medical Systems, Inc., in Mechanicsburg. At the time of his death, he was president and CEO of Classic Residence by Hyatt in Chicago, Ill. Mr. Lehman was a member of the Mount Calvary Episcopal Church in Camp Hill. He was an experience pilot and avid fisherman and coached various sports teams for youth. Mr. Lehman had delivered The Derrick for a number of years in the Oil City area. He was married July 18, 1982, to Joanne AUSTIN of Pittsburgh. He had a son, Nathan Austin Lehman, born June 15, 1989. Surviving, in addition to his parents of Oil City, are a brother, Fred R. Lehman and his wife, Bobbe, of Butler; two sisters, Peggy BORLAND and her husband, Frank, of Cranberry, and Barbara DITTMAN and her husband, Gary, of Shippenville; and serveral nieces, nephews and cousins.
Joanne Austin Lehman, 47, was born Jan. 5, 1952, in McKeesport, a daughter of the late Harry Austin and Rita Austin. Mrs. Lehman was a graduate of West Virginia University. She was a word processor, and she worked for the Humane Society in Mechanicsburg. Mrs. Lehman was a member of Mount Calvary Episcopal Church in Camp Hill. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking and baking. She was devoted to the care and concerns of animals. Mrs. Lehman was married July 18, 1982, to Dennis Lewis Lehman. Her son, Nathan Austin Lehman, was born June 15, 1989. Surviving are her mother of Monroeville; two brothers, Harry Austin Jr. of York and William Austin of Los Angeles, Calif.; a sister, Sue Ann WOLICICH of West Palm Beach, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Nathan Austin Lehman, 10, was born June 15, 1989, in Austin, Texas, the son of Dennis Lewis and Joanne Austin Lehman. He attended elementary school in the Cumberland County School District. He was a member of the swimming team, the soccer team and the baseball team and held a black belt in Tai Kwon Do. He was an accomplished pianist. He was a member of Mount Calvary Episcopal Church in Camp Hill. He enjoyed camping and fishing. His constant companion, Riley, the family pet, also perished in the plane crash. The family suggests memorials be given to a church of one's choice, food banks or to the humane society.
Harry Robert Beatty, 63, of 32 Chestnut St., died Sunday, Aug. 15, 1999, in his home. Born Feb. 8, 1936, in Punxsutawney, he was a son of Augustus R. and Dorothy E. Beatty. He served from 1954 to 1957 in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Beatty lived in the Oil City area most of his life. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Surviving are a son, Richard R. Beatty of McKean; two daughters, Melinda S. Beatty of Waterford and Shelly M. PERU of Oil City; and five grandchildren. He also is survived by three brothers, Donald R. Beatty and his wife, Nancy, of Mount Pleasant Mills, James L. Beatty of Union City and Charles E. Beatty and his wife of Anchorage, Alaska; one sister and her husband, Babara A. and Joseph LANDAUER of Erie; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Timothy W. Beatty. The Hutchinson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangement. There will be no visitation.
D. Kathryn "Katie" Shaffer, 82, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of New Bethlehem, died Monday morning, Aug. 16, 1999, in Roanoke. Born Jan. 20, 1917, in Eddyville, Armstrong County, she was a daughter of John Doverspike KELLS and Della Catherine RUMBAUGH Kells. She was a graduate of Kittanning High School and Phillipsburg State Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Shaffer worked as a private duty nuse and held the same position at Brookville Hospital until her retirement. She was a former member of the First United Methodist Church in New Bethlehem and a member of Southview United Methodist Church in Roanoke. Mrs. Shaffer also was a member of the New Bethlehem Chapter No. 230, Order of Eastern Star. She was married April 17, 1941, to Vernon R. Shaffer, who died Feb. 8, 1995. Surviving are a son and daughter-in-law, Dean P. and Barbara A. Shaffer of Roanoke; three grandchildren, Christopher J. Shaffer of Clearfield, Matthew D. Shaffer of Blacksburg, Va., and Kathryn A. Shaffer of Roanoke; two great-grandchildren, Alaina Nicole Shaffer and Richard John Shaffer of Clearfield. She also is survived by one sister, Maxine REYNOLDS of Altadena, Calif.; and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Shaffer was preceded in death by a son, Richard V. Shaffer, and four brothers. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Rupert Funeral Home, New Bethlehem Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home. The Rev. George Pearson, pastor of Southview United Methodist Church in Roanoke, and the Rev. Joseph Onder, pastor of First United Methodist Church in New Bethlehem, will officiate. Special music will be provided by Bruce Shaffer, Nephew of Mrs. Shaffer. Interment will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery at Beautiful Lookout. The family requests donations be made to a charity of one's choice or to the Building Fund of Southview United Methodist Church, 3539 Peters Creek Road, Roanoke, Va., 24019.
Evelyn L. Payne, 85, of Marienville West Apartments, Marienville, died at 3:40 p.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 1999, in Hamot Medical Center, Erie, following a lengthy illness. Born June 21, 1914, in Guffey, she was a daughter of Harry and Ethel YOUNG CALDWELL. Mrs. Payne was area foreman for Green Thumb. She was a member of Marienville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Payne also was a member of Tiona Diamond Gange, Marienville Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary and the Sheffield and Marienville Senior Citizens. She had been a Girl Scout leader for many years. Mrs. Payne was married in Brookville in 1938 to Frank Payne, who preceded her in death. Surviving are a son, Frank E. Payne of Marienville; three daughters, Martha A. BREWSTER of Venice, Fla., Dorothy L STAUB of Mount Juliet, Tenn., and Sherry J. STINEBISER of Marienville; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. She also is survived by a brother, Robert Caldwell of Warren, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Payne was preceded in death by a sister, Wilda BIRCH; five brothers, Blaine Caldwell, John Caldwell, Edward Caldwell, Harold Caldwell and Kahle Caldwell; and one grandson, Charles E. Payne. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Borden Funeral Home, 203 W. Main St., Sheffield, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday in Marienville United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the church with the Rev. John Hollis, pastor, officiating. Interment will be in North Forest Cemetery, Marienville. The family suggests memorial donations be made to the American Heart Association or to the local hospice.
Clair E. Huff, 82, of 318 Egbert St., Franklin, died at 5:55 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, 1999, in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh.
