Richard C. Lewis, 81, of East Liberty Street, Clarion, died Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, at his residence. Born June 12, 1918, in Clarion, he was a son of Roy Amos and Bertha RENNINGER Lewis. Mr. Lewis was an Army veteran of World War II, serving as a technician 4th grade, Battery A, 101st Field Artillery Battalion, 26th Division. He received the Bronze Star Medal with OCL Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal and EAME Service Medal with four Bronze Stars. He was a partner in the painting business with his father. In 1965, he was employed with Clarion University as a paint foreman until his retirement in 1981. Mr. Lewis was a lifetime member of both the VFW Post No. 2145 and the Clarion Moose. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church of Clarion. Mr. Lewis had many hobbies and enjoyed his family and helping others. He was married May 14, 1942, to Mary Elizabeth DRAYER, who survives. Also surviving are a son, Richard C. Lewis Jr. and wife, Rose Mary, of Clarion; two grandchildren, Michele CARROLL and her husband, Michael, of Virginia and Michael Lewis of Clarion; and one great-granddaughter, Mikayla Carroll. He also is survived by a brother, Donald Lewis of Fisher; and a sister, Mrs. Ann BUZARD of Jupiter, Fla. In addition to his parents, Mr. Lewis was preceded in dealth by two sisters, Mrs. Betty SAYLOR and Mrs. Louise DOLBY. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Goble Funeral Home of Clarion. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Immaculate Conception Church in Clarion. Interment will follow in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Clarion. Memorials may be made to the Clarion-Forest VNA or to a charity of one's choice.

Betty Jane Irwin Hanes, 71, a resident of Beverly Healthcare, Oil City, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 1999, in Northwest Medical Center, Oil City. Born Aug. 28, 1927, in Plumer, she was a daughter of Melvin T. and Florence DEITRICK Irwin. Mrs. Hanes had worked at GTE Sylvania in Titusville. Surviving are five children, one sister and one brother. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today in the Morrison Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Interment will be in Plumer Cemetery.

Betty L. Brown, 74, a former resident of 22 Spruce St., North Fork Heights, Brookville, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 1999, in Jefferson Manor, Brookville. Born Nov. 23, 1924, in Roaring Springs, she was a daughter of Clyde R. and Mary RICE WALTER. Mrs. Brown worked as a secretary/job information specialist for the U.S. government in Phoenix, Ariz., and had worked for the American Lung Association in West Palm Beach, Fla. She attended the Baptist Church. Mrs. Brown was a former member of the American Business Women's Association. She was married to Charles A. Brown, who died Feb. 6, 1963. Surviving are a son and his wife, Alfred and Marilyn Brown of Chicago, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Edward Jack (Carole Ann) CYPERT and Mary Ada Brown, both of Brookville; and two granddaughters, Amy Lynn Brown of Chicago, Ill., and Kimberly Louise Brown of Tulsa, Okla. She also is survived by a brother, Curtis Walter of Martinsburg; and several nieces. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by a son, Robert Brown. Visitation will be held at the time of services at 1 p.m. Friday in Meade Chapel Cemetery, Knox Township, Jefferson County. The Rev. Mike Garvey will officiate. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association or to the Meade Chapel Methodist Church. The McKinney Funeral Home, 345 Main St., Brookville, is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth E. Dunkle, 95, of 119 Crumlin Ave., Girard, Ohio, a native of Franklin, died suddenly of cadiac arrest at 6:31 p.m. Monday, Aug. 9, 1999, in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Youngstown, Ohio.
