DEATH OF RICHARD IRVINE HEARN

CAR PLUNGES THROUGH BRIDGE FATHER OF 5 CHILDREN DROWNS NEW LISKEARD
A father of five young children drowned when the car in which he was driving broke through wooden guardrails on a bridge, plunged 15 feet and ended up submerged under about 25 feet of water in the Wabi river near here Friday night or Saturday morning. Police have established no time or cause for the accident which occurred in Dymond township some four miles northeast of here. The body of Richard Irvine Hearn, 32, of Uno Park, was recovered shortly after four o'clock Saturday afternoon - eleven minutes after Constable Berry of the Haileybury OPP detachment began dragging operations in the murky waters of the river. An employee of the Northern Telephone Company, New Liskeard. Hearn was last seen by his brother Art, at about 11 p.m. Friday in New Liskeard before he set out to drive home. Hearn's wife, Juanita, 28, became alarmed when her husband didn't show up all night and called police here at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. OPP Constable Ralph Hopkins of the local municipal detachment received the call. An unidentified resident reported he noticed the guard rails on the bridge broken and Constable Hopkins sped out in the cruiser to take a look. He knew there was a car below because the rail showed blue paint scraped off and a small stream of oil was seen rising to the surface. Constable Hopkins put in a call. Constable Berry arrived on the scene with Corporal Sid Daley and Constable Dave Paul. It took four hours to recover the totally wrecked 1952 model car from the Wabi River, but it came up minus its driver. Dragging operations were started immediately and the body recovered from the same location as the car. Dr. A. C. Farlinger, coroner, New Liskeard, performed an autopsy and determined death was due to drowning. There were no signs of violence to the body and no bones were broken. "Police have advanced no theory on the cause of the accident," Constable Berry stated. It is believed, however, that the victim had been on his way home when the car plunged over the bridge. The condition of the road at this point was reported to be generally good with a steep decline to the bridge. Hearn was alone at the time of the crash, it is presumed. He was the father of five young children - Bryan, 10; Danny, 8; Randy 7; David, 4; and Ilene, 10 months old. He was predeceased by his parents but survived by a number of brothers and sisters. They are: Art Hearn, Haileybury; Ivan Hearn, Port Carling; Mrs. Delma Porteous, Noranda; Mrs. Mabel Meunier and Mrs. Ruth Hermiston, Bradford, and Mrs. Dorothy Black (sic), Sudbury. A member of the United Church of Canada, Hearn will be buried Tuesday at 2 p.m. in New Liskeard.
