OBITUARY OF THELMA MARION HEARN PHILLIPS

Thelma Marion Hearn Phillips
--------------

Thelma Marion Phillips died at the Temiskaming Hospital, on June 10, 2005, after a brief illness.
Born on January 25, 1924, in Harley Township, she was the daughter of George Hearn and Effie Hayes.
She was married to the late Lawrence Phillips of Uno Park in 1948, and resided in Kerns Township.
Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker, devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, knitting, sewing, and helping others. Mrs. Phillips was a generous woman who opened her home to others. She was very humble about her accomplishments and her ability to overcome adversity and challenges in her life. She loved her many pets and her home was always open to strays.
She was predeceased by her husband Lawrence Phillips in 2003.
She is survived by her children; Marilyn Phillips (Byron Nicholson), Darlene Beland (Norm), Sandra Willard (Eric), Lorna Phillips (Shaun Seabrook), Blair Phillips (Denise Ethier), Mark Phillips (Darlene Willard), Buddy Sterling (Shelley Lajoie); her grandchildren — Jason Willard (Michelle Landry), Lisa Nicholson (Jeff Doyle), Andrea Beland (Sarba Broderick), Michelle Nicholson, Melinda Willard (Sjoerd Ton), Jaclyn Beland, Sarah Beland (Shawn Keller), Kelli Nicholson, Brandon Phillips, Laura Phillips, Vanessa Phillips, Zachary Phillips, Jasmine Sterling, Jordan Sterling, Aaron Seabrook; great grandchildren — Jordie and Jenika Ton, Isabelle, Angelia and Julianne Willard; and dear sister Norma Dickinson.
The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard, and conducted by Fr. John Lemire. Cremation has occurred, with burial at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends from out of town who attended the services came from St. Catherines, Lake Kenogmai, Waterloo, Elmira, Oshawa, Barrie, Timmins, North Bay, and Vancouver BC.
Memorial donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or CAT Scan Foundation would be appreciated by the family.

North Bay resident Tamara Jane MacFarlane died suddenly as the result of an accident on September 11, 2004 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. Born in New Liskeard on March 18, 1969, she is lovingly remembered by her mother Barb VanRoboys and stepfather Bill Kelly of Chatham, father Dean MacFarlane of New Liskeard, daughter Lindsay Marie and sister Billie-Gail MacFarlane of Ottawa. Ms. MacFarlane gave the gift of life by choosing to be an organ donor. Cremation with interment of remains in Maple Leaf Cemetery, Chatham, will be at a later date. Diane Elizabeth Bernicky of RR#2 Thornloe died unexpectedly on March 22, 2004 at the Temiskaming Hospital. She was born to Walter Reliss Bernicky and Mary Germaine Murray on November 25, 1957 in Smiths Falls where she also received her education. A homemaker, Ms. Bernicky moved to New Liskeard in January of 1981 from Smiths Falls with her husband Rickey Sterling. She loved crocheting, cooking, baking, taking care of her family, card games and computer poker. A member of the Catholic church, Ms. Bernicky is survived by her husband Rickey Sterling; son Eric and daughter Rachel; sister Shirley Bernicky; brothers Freddy Bernicky and Joe Bernicky; nephew Donna (Miranda) Sterling and Mercedes and Donald; nieces Elizabeth Sterling (Kelsey, Patrick and Saphire), April Sterling and Trevor, Bunnie (Mat) Knott and Dillan, Abby-Gale and Kenneth; brother-in-law Bud Sterling (Shelley) and Jasmine and Jordan; sister-in-law Muriel Peddie (Garfield); niece Tanya Peddie (Pascal Maille) and Tryston and Maylin Maille; nephew Blair Peddie; brother-in-law Don A. Sterling; sister-in-law Peggy Suffel and daughters Angie Miron and Melanie Miron and granddaughter Emily. She was predeceased by her parents Walter and Mary Bernicky, brothers Walter, Larry and George Bernicky. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted by Father John Lemire on March 25. Pallbearers were Blair and Mark Phillips, Mathew Knott, Jim Dickinson, Joseph Dodge and Blair Peddie. A luncheon was held at the Harley Hall. Burial is in the spring at the Harley Township Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from Tillsonburg, North Bay, Smiths Falls and Montreal.

OBITUARY OF MIKEAL WAYNE HEARN

Mikeal Wayne Hearn died February 23, 1996 in Sudbury after a short illness. Mr. Hearn was born May 17, 1971 in New Liskeard to parents Bradley and Sandra Hearn. The resident of Thornloe was educated at Gwen School in New Liskeard and he was a member of the United Church. He is survived by his parents Bradley and Sandra; brothers Terry, Wally, Danny and Aaron Hearn; and sisters Alice Hearn and Sherry Hunting. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard on February 26, 1996. The service was conducted by Richard Hunting. Pallbearers were Terry Wally, Danny and Aaron Hearn; Garett Hunting and Sean Flannigan. Burial to follow at Harley Cemetery.

The junction of two seldom used, graveled country roads framed tragedy, early on Sunday afternoon. At this meeting place of the two roads little has happened of note, that is until Sunday and then in one day, in the span of seconds, four persons had been killed and nine others were being rushed to hospital in conditions varying from fair to serious. The head on collision which occurred at approximately 2:00 p.m., on Sunday afternoon claimed the lives of Donald Sterling aged 40; his wife Emily also aged 40; Mr. Sterling’s father Angus, 67; and Mrs. Alice Hearn, 40. All were from concession 4, Harley. In hospital in New Liskeard are the five, now orphaned, Sterling children. Peggy 15, Donald Jr 14, Muriel 11, Richard 9 and Buddy 3. Also hospitalized were the husband of Mrs. Hearn, George Hearn and their two children, Robert 6 and Pat 3. The driver of the other vehicle, Ralph Knott,23 of Hilliardton is in hospital but is not considered to be in serious condition. Dr. H.A. Dunnings of Cobalt had to be brought to the scene of the accident by police cruiser. He had been attending another fatal accident on Highway 65 west at the time. Most of the injured were transported to hospital in New Liskeard by private cards as an ambulance could not immediately be located.

Effie Hearn, 78, died June 27 at Temiskaming Hospitals, Haileybury unit. At the time of her death se was residing at the home of Mrs. Lawrence Phillips, RR 1, New Liskeard. Mrs. Hearn was born April 26, 1900 to parents William Hayes and the former Emily Wilkinson in Trout Creek. She was educated in Charlton. She married George Hearn Nov.3, 1919 in Haileybury. She was predeceased by her husband Aug. 17, 1961, in North Bay. A member of the United Church, Mrs. Hearn was a housewife during her married life. She is survived by one son, George Hearn Jr., two daughters, Norma, Mrs. Gordon Dickinson, and Thelma, Mrs. Lawrence Phillips, four sisters, three brothers, 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral arrangements were by Perrin Funeral Chapel, with a service conducted by Rev. Morley Mitchell of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Liskeard, June 30. Burial was at Hanbury Cemetery. Pallbearers were Miles Evans, Robert, Tony and Darcy Hearn and Mark and Blair Phillips. Relatives and friends attending the funeral included Mr. And Mrs. Alex Dingwall, Jim Catt and Elsie, Bertha Watters, Ed Donnelly, Burt Hayes and Gordon Knight.

OBITUARY OF LAWRENCE DAVID PHILLIPS

After a lengthy illness, Lawrence David Phillips of R. R. #1, New Liskeard died March 2, 2003 at the Temiskaming Hospital. He was born in Harley Township on October 27, 1920 to Lawrence Phillips and Anne Raymond. Educated at Uno Park, Mr. Phillips was involved in farming throughout his life in Kerns Township and also worked off of the farm driving truck. He was a charter member of the Kerns Central Lions Club and devoted many hours to helping individuals and charities throughout the area. He was also a life-long fan of the Montreal Canadiens. Mr. Phillips adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and looked forward to sharing in their hobbies and activities. He was affectionately known to his family as "Dear," "Fozz," "Poppa," "Grandpa P," and of course, Dad. Mr. Phillips was a well-read man who encouraged life long learning, which is evident in the success of his children and grandchildren. He loved the outdoors, fishing and gardening and had a special place in his heart for animals, especially strays. He believed that any task worth doing was worth doing well. Mr. Phillips had a tremendous love of people and life and was very generous to family and friends. Although he started out with a wife, and six children, there was always "room for one more" -- his nephew Buddy, his niece Peggy and his mother-in-law Effie Hearn all called his home "their home." Mr. Phillips had a tremendous sense of humour. He was always able to generate something positive, even from the most unfortunate situations in life. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Thelma (Hearn) Phillips, whom he married in Uno Park on June 17, 1948; children Marilyn Phillips (Byron Nicholson), Darlene (Norm Beland), Sandra (Eric Willard), Lorna Phillips (Shaun Seabrook), Blair (Denise Ethier), Mark (Darlene Willard) and Buddy Sterling (Shelley Lajoie); grandchildren Jason Willard (Michelle Landry), Lisa Nicholson, Andrea Beland (Sarba Broderick), Michelle Nicholson, Melinda Willard (Sjoerd Ton), Jaclyn Beland, Sarah Beland, Kelli Nicholson, Brandon Phillips, Laura Phillips, Vanessa Phillips, Zachary Phillips, Jasmine Sterling, Jordan Sterling and Aaron Seabrook; great grandchildren Jordie Ton, Isabelle Willard and Angelia Willard; sisters Lena Kuchar (Andrew Kuchar), Florella Leduc (Leo Leduc) and Doris Willard (Pearlie Willlard); brothers John Phillips (Jean Phillips) and Edward Phillips (Micheline Phillips); and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Phillips was predeceased by his sister Archimese Phillips, Olive Phillips, Mary Raymond, Josephine Raymond and Amelia Chapman. The funeral was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel in New Liskeard with the service conducted at Our Mother of Perpetual Help Church by Father John Lemire. Pallbearers were Brandon Phillips, Darren Hearn, Jason Willard, Rick Sterling, Terry Phillips and Merrill Dickinson. Spring interment to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending the service from out of town came from St. Catharines, Calgary, Boissevain (Manitoba), British Columbia, Waterloo, Windsor, Toronto, Barrie and Timmins.

OBITUARY OF GEORGE WESLEY HEARN

George Wesley Hearn

George Wesley Hearn died at his home in Harley Township on July 10, 1998 after a battle with cancer. Mr. Hearn was born in Harley on April 23, 1926 to George and Effie Hearn. Educated at King George School in Kirkland Lake, he worked as a crusher at Lakeshore Mine, farmed and also worked at Northern Telephone. On December 6, 1946 he married Alice Emma Hermiston in Kirkland Lake. Mr. Hearn is survived by his children Bradley (Sandra) Hearn; Frankie (Steve Marriott); Robert (Bonnie) Hearn; Patti (Smiley); sisters Norma Dickinson and Thelma (Laurence) Phillips. He was predeceased by his wife Alice in 1968; grandson Mikeal Hearn and sister Emily Sterling. The funeral for Mr. Hearn was arranged by Perrin Funeral Chapel. Reverend Robert McCarty conducted the service. Pallbearers were Wally, Terry, Danny, Aaron and Joshua Hearn, Gerry Marriott, and Art Marriott, all grandsons. Burial is at the Harley Cemetery.
