--------------- HEARN - HAYES
---------------
A quiet and pretty wedding was solemnized Wednesday 29th, inst. at the home of the bride’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Hayes of Dack Township near Charlton; when Eva Allice was united in marriage to Mr. Richard Harris HEARN, of Maybrook. The ceremony was performed by Rev. Wm. Farmer, of Englehart. The bride was given away by her father and looked charming. Mr. Wesley Hayes acted as groomsman and Miss Lila G. Chrysler, as bridesmaid.
After the ceremony a large company of friends sat down to a sumptuous dinner after which the health of the happy couple was proposed and responded to with many kind wishes.
Mr. and Mrs. HEARN left Englehart on the five o’clock train going south.

--------------- TEMISKAMING ACRE CROP COMPETITION IN POTATOES
---------------
During the past summer, the Ontario Department of Agriculture through the
local Agriculture Representative conducted an "Acre Profit Competition in
Potatoes. Eighteen (?) boys entered the Contest, and of those nine
submitted reports. Each contestant was required to have one acre of Potatoes, (any variety) and was also required to keep an accurate account of all work done commencing in connection with preparing the soil, planting, cultivating, harvesting, storing etc. The Department supplied blank
forms on which to tabulate all expenses, and no charge of any kind was
imposed in connection with this competition.
The number of awards granted, depends on the number of entries in
the competition, also on the number that send in final reports. If there are 12
entries and eight of the Contestants send in reports, a first and second prize
is awarded. This rule permits two boys to be sent to the Ontario
Agriculture College, Guelph, to attend one of the Two Weeks. Short
courses put on in Jan. and Feb. each year. Following are the names
of nine young men who sent in final reports in connection with their
work. The names are arranged in order of merit:
Chas H. Thomas, R. R. 1, New Liskeard, Ont. Variety, “Pioneer Pride.” Yield (Marketable) 617 bus. Cost of Production $80.20.
Bruce Irvine, Hanbury, Ont.-- Variety, “Eureka and Delaware” Yield (Marketable) 506 bus. Cost of Production $83.37.
Jno. A. Hall, R. R. 3, New Liskeard, Ont. -- Variety, “Early Sun Rise.” Yield (Marketable) 483 bus. Cost of Production $102.07.
RICHARD HEARN, Maybrook, Ont. --Variety "Mixed Seed". (Yield
Marketable) 439 bus. Cost of production $91.15.
David Gray, New Liskeard, Ont. Variety, “Pioneer Pride.” Yield (Marketable) 617 bus. Cost of Production $80.20.
Wm. F. Ball, New Liskeard, Ont. Variety, “Delaware Type.” Yield (Marketable) 367 bus. Cost of Production $55.85.
W.T. Guimane, New Liskeard, Ont. Variety, “Gold Coin.” Yield (Marketable) 377 bus. Cost of Production $79.00.
Eldred Morrow, R. R. #1, New Liskeard, Ont. Variety, Mixed, “Cobbler and Rose.” Yield (Marketable) 341 bus. Cost of Production $63.00.
Edward Healey, Hanbury, Ont. Variety, “Eureka.” Yield (Marketable) 282 bus. Cost of Production $47.55.
The first two names above list - viz - Chas. Thomas and Bruce Irvine, are now attending the Stock and Seed Judging Course at Guelph. The Course opened on Jan. 10th and continues for two weeks. Travelling expenses and Board are paid by the Dept. Jno. A. Hall, next high man has been awarded a “Scuffler” by Messrs. O’Grady Bros. of New Liskeard, Representatives of the International Harvester Company. The Department appreciates very much, the kindness and interest of Mr. O’Grady in this work.
In calculating the cost of production, the Dept. has set a rate of $6.00 per day for man and team, rent of $6.00 per acre is also charged against the land, plowing $4.00 per acre. Seed was charged for, at the rate of $1.00 per bushel, and the same amount was allowed per bushel for the crop. These prices are set by the Dept. and not by the Local Representative. The charge of $1.00 per bushel, for seed for last Spring is high, but does not affect the results, to the same extent as that of $1.00 per bus. for the crop, which is considerable more than market price. However, the principal and important phase of the work is to cause young men to give some thought to the cost of Production on the farm, and possibly influence them to keep an account of the of the cost of producing other crops as well.
Crop Competitions of different kinds are conducted by all Agriculture Representatives, throughout the Province each year. As a result there are upwards of two hundred young men sent to either the Kemptville School of Agriculture, or the O.A.C. Guelph, every year. Successful winners in these competitions are privileged to attend any one of the following two weeks courses -- Stock and Seed Judging, Farm Power, Poultry, Horticulture, etc.
Any young man over 16 or under 30 years of age is permitted to enter the contest. The Dept. is planning to conduct one or more competitions next year, and will be pleased to have a large entry.
Full information, in connection with this work may be had by applying to W.G. Nixon, Agricultural Representative, New Liskeard, Ont.

--------------- MILBERTA WINS DIAMOND DUEL ---------------
One of the highlights of the Kiwanis picnic for farmers and rural school children held at the New Liskeard Beach last Thursday was the ball game between Milberta and Thornloe. The game was quite spontaneous and teams were picked on the spot.
Although Milberta won by a 17-5 score and richly deserved the victory the game was not as one-sided as the score would indicate. One bad inning in which the Milbertans got 11 runs across the plate accounted very largely for Thornloe’s downfall. Apart from that one session play was pretty evenly matched.
The teams: Milberta - Willard, Caldwell, Phillips, Hillcoat, HEARN, Armstrong, Bray, Cook and JIBB.
Thornloe - Little, Rowman, HEARN, PORTEOUS, James, VELEY, Semple, O’Brien, Dodge.
