Mary Hearns was born June 10, 1810 to Darius David and Nancy Parks. Mary was baptised June 10, 1810, according to the Registers of Reverend John Langhorn of Fredericksburg (in ONTARIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY, Papers and Records, Volume 1, Published in Toronto in 1899, reprinted in 1930. Pages 14-70, shown as 'Herns'). This baptism took place two years after Darius’ second marriage to Nancy on January 12, 1808.
Mary married first George Bowers and second Augustus Huyck.
Mary Hearns and George Bowers had four children, namely: Mary Bowers, born 1835, died March 20, 1835 in Fredericksburgh, Ontario; George N. Bowers, born 1838, died February 25, 1839 in Fredericksburgh, Ontario; Willmotte Bowers, born 1841, died November 26, 1841 in Fredericksburg, Ontario and lastly, Victoria Bowers, born 1840, died August 20, 1851 in Fredericksburgh, Ontario.
Augustus Huyck was born about 1815, the son of Burger Huyck and Phebe Clapp. He and Mary Bowers were married November 12, 1866 in Lenox & Addington County.
It during this time that Darius Jr. went to Cramahe to work with the Perry’s that the 1851 census for Fredericksburgh Township shows Nancy Hearns living with her daughter Mary and son-in-law, George Bowers. She is listed as 62 years old, born in New York and she is recorded as being a member of the Methodist Church. This is contradictory to the inscription the gravestone which says she was 62 years old in 1853. Mary is registered as being 41 years of age and her occupation was listed as tailoress. George is listed as a carpenter, 42 years of age; both are shown to be born in Canada West. There are no children recorded of Mary and George on the 1851 census indicating that Victoria had passed away at that time.
In the 1861 census of Fredricksburgh Township (part 4, p.47, microfilm C-1046), Mary and her first husband, George Bowers (aged 53 and 50, respectively) were listed immediately below the following members of the Herns family, Catherine (aged 38, married), Lydia (aged 27), Nancy (aged 23), Mary (aged 18), Jerusha (aged 16), Jason (aged 14), Catherine (aged 6) and Sarah (aged 2). There was a Jason (aged 45, married) listed five pages earlier in the same census.
November 9, 1863 George Bowers, through his will, deeds the land on Lot 11, Concession 4 to his wife Mary, although it was not registered until after his death on March 22, 1865, that the land was transferred and registered on April 4, 1965. It appears that George knew of his impending death as early as November when he made his will. However, it was 1834 that Darius Sr. and Thomas actually sold parts of the homestead parcel over to Mary’s husband George.
In the 1871 census of Hinchenbrooke Township, Addington County (page 12, microfilm C-9997) Jason Hearns (aged 57) and his wife Catherine (aged 47) were listed with their children Jason (aged 18), Catherine (aged 14) and Sarah (aged 11). Based on the names and ages, this was the family of Jason and Catherine Hearns described in the 1861 census above.
Mary and Augustus Huyck are buried in the Carscallen Wagar Cemetery in Fredericksburgh near her parents, Darius Senior and Nancy Parks. Mary’s headstone, the one she shares with Augustus, records her date of death as February 25, 1890. Mary lived to be 80 years old and is buried in plot 19a next to her first husband and four children.
The children of Mary and George are buried together close to George in a space between the headstones of Mary and Augustus and Darius and Nancy in the Carscallen Wagar Cemetery in Fredericksburg. Their headstones have fallen, crumbled and are piled in a heap together. Their information is as follows:
George Bowers died about March 22,1865 in Fredericksburgh at the age of 71 years. Buried at Carscallen Wagar Cemetery Lot 12, Concession 6, Plot 18 North Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox & Addington County. His grave marker has engrossed “Father’s Grave.”
Mary Bowers Died age 1 month 30 days. Located at Lot 12, Concession 6, Plot 16a North Fredericksburgh Township, Lennox & Addington County. Buried in Carscallen Wagar Cemetery.
George N. Bowers Aged one year, 10 months and 25 days at Carscallen Wagar Cemetery, Plot 16b, Lot 12, Concession 6, North Fredericksburgh, Lennox & Addington County.
Willmotte Bowers aged 2 months, 7 days (4); at Carscallen Wagar Cemetery, Plot 16c, Lot 12, Concession 6, North Fredericksburgh, Lennox & Addington County.
E. Victoria Bowers, aged ten years, 1 month, 24 days at Carscallen Wagar Cemetery, Plot 16d, Lot 12, Concession 6, North Fredericksburgh, Lennox & Addington County.
Augustus Huyck and Mary Hearns were shown as joint tenants on the land known as Lot 11, Concession 4 in 1879. They held on to this piece of real estate until, at least, 1885.
The map of Fredericksburgh, estimated to be between 1879 and 1885, the time-frame that Augustus was shown on the land records, reveals the piece of property that was the original land grant from Thomas Sr. While one half of the piece now belonged to Augustus, the other half was in the name of Wm. Hambly. Mr. Hambly obtained this property no earlier than 1874. Next to it are two parts of Lot 12, Concession 4, belonging to the Carscallen family. It is on this piece of property, on the side next to the Napanee River that the Carscallen-Wagar Cemetery is located.
