GEORGE ELGIN HEARNS

George Elgin Hearns, third child of Darius Hearns and Dorothy MacDonald, was born on June 28, 1836; place of birth unidentified, however, we believe it to be somewhere in Northumberland or Newcastle District. The 1901 Census indicates George's date of birth as November 28, 1836. On his marriage record George indicates his place of birth as "Canada." This notation is seen quite often and may refer to “Canada West” or the “Province of Canada” both of which no longer exist.

We do know that he died December 12, 1906 and is probably buried in Owenbrook Cemetery, although a headstone does not exist.
George married Sarah Ann Hawkins, daughter of George H. Hawkins and Mary Ann Clarke, on April 20, 1861 in Cramahe Township, the marriage register reading as follows:
“George Harns (sic) age 25, of Cramahe, b. Canada, parents Darius & Dorothy, married Sarah A. Hawkins, age 18, of Cramahe, b. US, parents George & Mary Ann. Witness Jas McDougall of Cramahe, April 20, 1861. Source: MS248, Reel 11, Vol. 39“
Sarah was born June 27, 1843; one source indicates Ireland, another indicates USA. It is more likely the Ireland reference relates to her heritage than her place of birth. The 1901 Census records Sarah's date of birth as January 27, 1844. There is no indication that the family ever lived in Ireland at the time of her birth. She died on January 17, 1922 in Chandos Twp. Peterborough County. The death registration stating she was buried in Owenbrook Cemetery. No grave marker exists.

Census information:
In 1851 Sarah Ann and her family are recorded in the 1851 Census of Cramahe.

In 1861 George leaves the family residence to start a new life with his wife Sarah Ann Hawkins. Together they had the following children:
William Albert Hearn, born October 11, 1869 or December 3, 1861
George Washington Hearn, born August 5, 1863
Henry Munroe Hearns, born November 28, 1868
Malvina Hearns, born September 20, 1870
James Henry Hearns, born April 13, 1874
Charles E. Hearn, born February 18, 1875, and
Ellen Bertha Hearns, born February 18, 1878

On June 30, 1891 an incident occurred that was described as a scandal. The incident, which closely involved family members, was of such a degree as to cause the family to leave the Northumberland area and move to Peterborough County. We know the family was in Northumberland to be registered in the 1891 census, however when Henry Munroe met and married Bertha Terrell they were living in Chandos Township.

George Elgin is believed to be buried in Owenbrook, Peterborough County. He does not have a headstone.

A family bible has survived this family and is in the possession of one of his descendants. Inside the cover we read that the bible was given to S.A. Hearns by Mr. G.E. Hearns, Colbourne, December 19, 1886. The following is contained on a page and a half of inscription:

GEORGE WASHINGTON HEARNS

Not too much is known of George Washington Hearns. He was born August 05, 1863, possibly in Northumberland County and he is recorded as having died in a house fire at The Ridge in Coe Hill, Wollaston Township, Hastings County on December 5, 1939.
George Washington was involved in the scandal that may have precipitated the family’s move from Northumberland to Hastings County.
The 1901 Census for Peterborough East has George living alone in Chandos Tp. He lists his birth as August 5, 1870; his age as 30 years.
George is buried in the
United Church Cemetery, Rusaw Road, Glena Alda, Chandos Township, Peterborough County beside his wife "Jennie" nee Hubble. Jennie was previously married to Charles Wesley Kelsh and has a number of children. The grave is marked by a simple wooden cross with the following a name plate attached, simply engraved "G. Hearns". There is no date of birth or death on the marker. Beside this cross is another cross with the name plate engraved "J. Hearns" and no other information provided. At the base of the cross is a footstone inscribed "Mother."

HENRY MUNROE HEARNS

Henry Munroe Hearns was born November 28, 1868 at Colborne, Ontario and died 1935 in Castleton, Ontario. Henry was living in Brighton in January of 1891, so it states on his sister’s marriage record. Henry married Bertha Maud Terrill, daughter of Simon Peter Terrill and Catherine Almira Hoard on March 15, 1898 in Coe Hill, Ontario.

JAMES HENRY HEARNS

The information we have on James is very brief and uninformative. James was born April 13, 1874 and died at the Rockwood Hospital, apparently in Kingston, Ontario. "Rockwood Asylum, now vacant, became an annex of the Kingston Psychiatric Hospital in the 1890s"
I‘ve been told that if an inmate there died and the body was not claimed by the family for burial he may be buried at Cataraqui Cemetery. A search of Cataraqui on the OCFA did not bring up any information.

CHARLES E. HEARNS

Charles was born February 18, 1875 and died in Colborne, Ontario.

MALVINA HEARNS

Malvina J. Hearns was born December 5, 1870 at Salem, Ontario and died in 1920 in Colborne, Ontario. Malvina married Rowland Yates on November 15, 1893 Port Hope, Durham Co. At the time of their marriage Rowland lived at Welcome, Ontario and Malvina lived at Cramahe. Rowland listed his occupation as a Farm Labourer. Rowland Yates was born August 25, 1866 at Bedfordshire England the son of Joseph Yates, born England, and Mary Odell, born England.

Malvina (Alvina) and Rowland had four children of this union. Malvina had one child, prior to her marriage to Rowland Yates, a son, that died in 1891 at the age of approximately four weeks.

ELLEN BERTHA HEARN

Ellen Bertha Hearns was born February 18, 1878 at Brighton, Ontario. Ellen married Johnathan B. Hawley on January 6, 1891 at Brighton Village. Johnathan who was born about 1852 at Percy Twp., he lived in Brighton at the time of his marriage to Ellen and was previously married. He is the son of Charles Hawley and Harriet Mix.
Ellen secondly married Allen Coones, a farmer from Burleigh Township, on November 9, 1903. The 1911 Census for Burleigh Township, Peterborough Co. shows a Sarah A. Hearns, widow, her mother, living with them.

Marriage Registration: "Marriage Register Peterborough County, 015601-03 , Allen COONES, blank, farmer, widower, Canada, Burleigh Tp., s/o parents not given, married Bertha HEARNS, blank, Canada, Anstruther Tp., d/o parents not given, witn: Albert SMITH of Burleigh Tp. & Lilly BULLIED of Chandos Tp. on Nov. 9, 1903 at Anstruther Tp."

Charles and Harriet Hawley had two children. The other, a daughter, namely Mary Hawley. Mary was born about 1859 in Cramahe. She married Benjamin Carl on October 13, 1876 at Lakefield. Benjamin was born about 1854 at Cramahe the son of John Carl & Mariah Puffer. Source: Peterboro Marriage register # 009116, registration year 1876

SARAH ANN HAWKINS

Sarah Ann is at this point a bit of a mystery. She was born June 27, 1843 to George Hawkins and Mary Ann Clarke. She married George Hearns on April 20, 1861 in Cramahe Township and died January 17, 1922 in Chandos Township, Peterborough County.

Sarah died on January 17, 1922 at the age of 77 years. The death record describes her as a domestic and a widow. However, this was not always the case. Sarah remarried two years after George passed away, to a Samuel J. Smith, resident in Coe Hill (Wollaston Township, Hastings County), a nearby community. At the time she recorded that her occupation as a farmer, indicating that she was still running the family farm. However, whether intentional or not, she listed her marital status as Spinster instead of Widow on the marriage record.

Although Sarah has indicated on many census’ that she was born in the United States, she must have been very proud of her Irish roots as her son George Washington indicates her origin as Irish.

Sarah passed away at the age of 77 years, on January 17, 1922 in Coe Hill. The informant was her son George. However, in 1911 Sarah had returned to the Peterborough area and was living with her daughter Bertha and son-in-law Allen Coones.
We do know, from the Death Registration for her, that Sarah was buried at Owenbrook, however a search of the cemeteries in the Owenbrook area failed to locate a headstone or marker of any sort.

Joseph Samuel Smith was born April 22, 1854 in Sophiasburgh, Prince Edward County, son of Samuel Smith and Sophia (Phebe) Tompkins. He was previously twice married. On October 14 1877 he married Margaret Ann Cole in Demorestville, Prince Edward County; the daughter of William and Sarah Cole. Margaret Ann was born May 31, 1859 in North Fredericksburgh, Lennox & Addington Co. and she died March 18, 1907 in North Marysburgh, Prince Edward Co.
Together they had the following children:
Sarah Ethel Smith, born January 23, 1881, Sophiasburgh, P.E. Co., died March 15, 1913 in Faraday, Hastings Co. Sarah married William T. Vance on February 7, 1894 in Picton, Ontario. William was born about 1864 in Picton, he died October 1915 in Prince Edward Co.
Irena May Smith, born January 2, 1883
Nellie Maud Smith, born June 2, 1890. Nellie married George Albert Carey. They had a daughter Mary Margaret Carey born 06 Jun 1907 in North Marysburgh, Prince Edward Co.
Ellen Smith, born about 1888 Ellen married George Carey

Sarah Smith and William Vance had the following children:
George Herman Vance, born 25 Jan 1896 in Prince Edward Co.
May Catherine Vance, born 18 Aug 1898 in Prince Edward Co.
Carrie May Vance, born 18 May 1902 in Prince Edward Co.
Francis Earle Vance, born 15 Aug 1906 in Prince Edward Co.

Following the death of Margaret, Sam Smith married Elizabeth Hicks on July 16 1907 in Picton, Ontario daughter of John Hicks and Mary Denike. It appears they did not have children and Sam remarried the following year to Sarah Ann Hawkins Hearns.

GEORGE H. HAWKINS

George H. Hawkins was born between 1818 and 1820 in the United States; he died January 1, 1901 in Colborne, Ontario. George married Mary Ann Clarke. Mary Ann was born in 1821 in Napanee and died July 24, 1869 in Haldimand Twp. Northumberland & Durham County.
George Hawkins and Mary Ann had three children:
1. William Albert Hawkins, born about 1840 at Buffalo NY; he died February 22, 1890 at Colborne
2. Sarah Ann Hawkins, see above
3. George W. Hawkins, born abt 1852, he died December 22, 1899

On the 1871 Census, George Sr. notes his occupation as “gentleman.” George was registered at the Post Office at Colborne, Cramahe Twp., Northumberland County. The registration shows that he settled there in 1847, his origin American, this according to the Canadian Country Atlas.

Death Certificate of George Hawkins: #020134, Occupation: Farmer, Address: King Street, Colborne

Death registration of Mary Ann Clarke: Page 212, General No. 1269, Cause of Death: Apoplexy; Dr. A. Bethune, Registrar: A. Vars; Registered Aug. 3, 1869, Religion: Presbyterian

William Albert Hawkins married Mary Ann Casey on May 27, 1869. Marriage registration reads as follows: “Name & age: Hawkins, William A., 2?; residence: Colborne; born: USA; Parents: George H. & Mary Ann; spouse name & age: Casey, Mary Ann, 22; residence: Colborne; born: Canada; parents: Patrick & Catherine; Witness name & residence: Benjamin Hale, Cramahe; date: 27-May-69, Source: Microfilm MS248, Reel 11, vol 39, Page: 83a
On the 1851 census William is recorded as living at Cramahe Township, his residence when he married was Colborne. Mary Ann also lived in Colborne when she married.
William and Mary Ann had one child that we know of: 1. Peter Hawkins born about 1889, he died January 10, 1890. Peter’s death certificate reads as follows: “#012638, Cause of Death: Whooping Cough, age: 23 days old.”
