Descendants of Darius Hearns Jr.

The first instance where the two Darius’ were mentioned together was the Militia list from the 1st Lennox Regiment 1818. The book titled the Men of Upper Canada Militia Nominal Roll for the year 1818 for Lennox County shows listed "Derius Harnes" and "Derius Harnes Junior" along with George Harnes and Thomas Harnes. It is also stated here, one had to be at least 16 years of age to join the Militia, therefore, Darius Junior would have to have been born by 1802 to be 16 years old in 1818. This would make him the son of Mary Gould and Darius Hearns Senior.
Darius Jr. lived in Cramahe Township and married Dorothy Macdonald on February 5 1826 at St. Peter‘s Anglican Church in Cobourg. The ceremony was solemnized by Reverend William McCaulay; another minister, David Turney, and an unidentified person witnessed the proceedings. Dorothy was born in 1807.
Darius Hearns Junior makes his appearance in the federal census records for Newcastle District, Cramahe Township in the years 1841, 1848; he is described as a labourer and had a large family. The 1841 Census shows Darius with the following in the household: males under 16: 1; males over 16: 1; females over 16: 1; females under 16: 3; for a total of 6 in the household. No religious denomination is given.
In the Ontario 1850 Census Darius is recorded on the Cramahe, Northumberland County Census as residing on Lot 16, Concession 3 with 8 persons in the household. He does not own the property. He is also recorded in the 1841 Ontario Census for Cramahe with four children under the age of 16; one son and three daughters.
The 1848 census for Cramahe Township shows Darius and Dorothy with three children between the ages of 5 and 15.The census shows that the family was sharing the lot in Cramahe Township with one "Avery Perry", lumber dealer. Darius is described as a labourer.

William shows up on Simcoe South, subdivision Innisfil, age 26, occupation farmer. Born in Ontario, Wesleyan Methodist with his origin as English. The known children born to Darius Hearns Junior and Dorothy MacDonald are Mary L. (born 1828), Elizabeth Jane (born 1831), George Elgin (born 1836) and Ellen (born 1839).
In 1828, Darius Junior and Dorothy MacDonald had a daughter whom they named Mary who was born approximately 1828 in Fredericksburg. Mary L. Hearns first married an “unknown” Coan. She secondly married George Howkins, born about 1823. This information was found in the Hastings County Marriages for 1869 to 1875 Volume 1, page 95 where it reads:
"George Howkins, 51, widower, residing in Thurlow, born Adolphustown, son of Robert Howkins and Mary Ford, married Mary L. Coan, 46, widow, residing in Thurlow, born Fredricksburgh, daughter of Darius Herns and Dorothy MacDonald. Belleville, August 8, 1874".
William was born about 1843. He first shows up in the 1861 Census in Cramahe. In 1871 William is located in Simcoe County, Innisfil Township, identified as a farmer but not on his own farm. However, In 1890 he is no longer a tenant but a land owner as we next locate William in Sunnidale Township, registered with the Sunnidale Corners post office. He is recorded as being a freeholder on Concession 10, Lot 12 (west of Sunnidale Road) ref: Farmers Directory for the County of Simcoe 1890.
Elizabeth Jane Hearns born approx. 1831 died June 2, 1920 in Colborne. Information provided, but not proven, is that Elizabeth died at the age of 89 years. She is believed to be in the Morrow family plot in Colborne, Ontario.
It also appears that after Darius passed away, and after the 1871 census, Elizabeth moved to Simcoe County. It is recorded in the Farmers Directory for the County of Simcoe 1890 that E.J .Hearn was registered with the Allandale Post Office. She is listed as a freeholder (not tenant) on Concession 14, Lot 7.
In the 1901 Census for Northumberland East, Colborne Village, Elizabeth is recorded as living with her sister-in-law Bertha Morrow. The entry states "Jane Harnes, sister-in-law, born September 8, 1830, age 70"
Ellen M. Hearns born January 25, 1840 according to the 1901 census for Northumberland East, Colborne Village, died August 18, 1928 in Colborne, Ontario. Ellen married Alexander Morrow on February 13, 1868. Ref: MS 248, reel 11, vol 39, Alexander's parents are: David & Jane.

In 1905 William and Charity were enumerated in Dayton, Waupaca County, Wisconsin and giving his birth year as 1843. In 1910 he is still residing in Dayton, Wisconsin (shown as Hurn). William died in November 1924 in Oshkosh Wisconsin and is buried in the Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh.
William married Charity Truax on September 21 1869 in Newmarket, York Co. Ontario. Charity was the daughter of Jane and John Truax born about 1833 in Clarke Ontario and died in October 1916 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Charity Hearns is also buried in Riverside Cemetery in Oshkosh.
William Hearns and Charity Truax had one daughter named Ida Ann Hearns who was baptized on July 14 1872 in Innisfil, Ontario according to Simcoe County Branch, Ontario Genealogical Society. A note in the Daily Northwestern newspaper (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) dated March 16, 1917 states "Mr. Hearns, formerly a Waupaca resident, now a resident of Oshkosh, is visiting here", indicated that William moved to Oshkosh after Charity's death to live with Ida Ann and William Genske.
Following the death of her husband William, Ida Ann continues to live with her sister-in-law Clara as shown in the 1930 Census. At this time Ida’s occupation is “gift studio” with a value of her home set at $9,000. Ida is also listed as owner. Ida was also honoured with prizes every year, including a nickel plated coffee urn, for her homemade bread as noted in the Daily Northwestern newspaper in 1917. Both Ida and William were church officers; William a trustee and superintendent of the Sunday School and Ida a member of the Prudential committee and the Ladies Missionary Society of the Plymouth Congregational Church in October of 1906.
In May of 1917 this same church honoured William and Ida with a program on their departure to reside in Chicago. On the 1900 census, for Midland Michigan, she shows her immigration year as 1872. For whatever reason, in this census she gives her name as Emily Chapman, a widow, living with her son Lewis. However, in the 1910 census for Midland, Michigan, she is still living with her son Lewis, but gives her name as Emily Hearns. Also in the same household is Hazel, age 17.

MORE TIDBITS ON DARIUS
An interesting item of note on Darius and another probable link between the Fredericksburgh and the Cobourg Hearns (daughter Mary‘s birth being another).
Ebenezer Perry Senior was born in Bath September 29, 1788. He had relatives
living all over the area including Fredericksburgh. Darius Hearns Junior,
we believe, was born in Fredericksburgh around 1800. The fathers of both men
were UEL. Ebenezer moved to Cobourg and became an accomplished business man who owned a lumber company and other businesses there. Darius Hearns Junior moved to the Cobourg area as well.
The 1848 head of household census record shows that Darius was living on the same lot as the lumber dealer Avery Perry. It appears to be more than a coincidence that Darius found work with the saw mill which the Perry's owned. The saw mill was called "Perry's Mill" and later was renamed "Pratt’s Mill". It is located near "Solomon Creek". Today, Pratt’s Mill has been converted to a restaurant called "The Mill Restaurant" that overlooks a nine-hole golf course. Ebenezer Perry died in Cobourg May 1st, 1876.
Please visit
An Historic
Walking Tour of Cobourg to learn more about Pratt’s Mill and its historical significance of the area.
Should this Avery Perry be related to Ebenezer Perry it would go a long way in explaining why Darius left Fredericksburg to find work in Cramahe with the Perrys. When you look at the 1848 census, you will see that both Avery Perry and Darius Hearns were living on the same lot, although neither appear to have held title to the land. Avery Perry is listed as a Commissioner of the Peace for Cobourg 1856 along with Joseph Keller and George Tice.
George Tice being a probable relative of Catherine Tice who married Thomas Hearns (Harnes) and a distant cousin.
