INTRODUCTION "How do you spell that name" Theres not one of us who hasn't been asked that question hundreds of times. According to Mrs. Laura Turnbow Williams, there are at least thirty different American spellings of this name. This listing includes the following:
The author has elected to write about the "Turnbough/Turnbow/Turnbo" families because that's the name that evolved in his family. While attempts have been made to locate the first Turnbo family to come to America, we've had little success. This is partially due to the frequent changes in spelling which are well illustrated above. There's a story that's circulated among family members that the first Turnbough to come to America was studying for the priesthood. If he had continued his studies, it certainly would have cut down on the population and this confusion on the family name; Figure #l - From Europe to Texas, the first four American Generations of the "Turnbo" family. |
