This is a collection of old photos of various people bearing the Tullis (or similar) name. If you would like to submit an old Tullis photo for inclusion, please email it to TomTullis@aol.com. It should have been taken before about 1925 or should be of someone born before about 1900. Please include complete names of any individuals, approximately when the photo was taken, and any known genealogical information (e.g., parents, children, dates, etc). JPEG photos are best, but I can handle almost any format. If you have better versions of any of these photos, please let me know. These photos are arranged in approximate date order. Recent additions or changes are flagged with a or icon.

JMTullisFamily.jpg About 1850 Dr. James Monroe Tullis (1822-1886) and his wife Patience (1830-1865). James was the son of Moses Tullis and Mary "Polly" Blalock, grandson of Moses Tullis and Letitia ?Newell?, and great-grandson of Moses Tullis and Mary Elizabeth Van Dyke. He was born in Edgefield Co, SC, lived in Marion Co, GA, and received his medical degree from the Georgia Medical College in Augusta. Their children were Mary C., Susan F., and Newell Gibson. The baby in the picture is probably either Mary or Newell. This is a daguerreotype.
AaronTullisJr.jpg About 1858 Aaron Tullis, Jr (1782-1859) and his third wife, Elizabeth Tullis (1793-1874). Aaron was the son of Aaron Tullis and Jean, and grandson of Moses Tullis and Mary Elizabeth Van Dyke. Aaron was born in Kentucky and died in Troy, OH. Children: Benjamin Franklin, Eliza, Miriam, Aaron Brandiff, and Anne Emeline.
CaptJamesTullis.jpg About 1860 Captain James Tullis (1805-1882) and his wife, Jeannet Shaw (1809-1882). James was the son of Moses and Lydia Tullis and grandson of William Tullis and Mary Platts. They lived in Bridgeton, NJ. James was a Ship's Master for 50 years. Their children were Lydia Parvin, James Smith, Hester Shaw, William, Sarah, George, James Aston, Mary Elizabeth, Hetty, Eugenia, and Wilbert.
ThomasSummersetTullis.jpg About 1862? Thomas Summerset Tullis (1835-1912), son of Moses Grooms Tullis and Mary Summerset. During the Civil War, Thomas served for the Union Army in Company "C", 5th Regiment of the Kansas Cavalry. He married Henrietta Clay Ogle and had one child, Walter Hercules. That marriage ended in divorce and he then married Mary E. Horner. They had four children: Loren, John, Mary, and Pearl Marie. (This photo is very unclear and appears to have been poorly touched up in the past. If anyone has a better version, please let me know.)
JamesMarshallTullisFam.jpg About 1867 James Marshall Tullis (1815-1878), his wife Mary Smith Tullis (1817-1901), and four of their children. James was the son of Aaron Tullis, Jr, and Mary Mackey. Mary, his cousin, was the daughter of William Tullis and Sarah Barbee. Both James and Mary were grandchildren of Aaron Tullis, son of Moses Tullis and Mary Elizabeth Van Dyke. The family lived in Ohio and Indiana. Children pictured: Esta Lou, Martha Augusta, Ada Bell, and Anna May. Other children: Sarah Angeline, Laura Louise, Sophronia E., Orange Scott, Francis Boucher, Edgar Prindle, Mary Alice, and Emma Eliza.
JamesTullisFamily.jpg About 1870 James Tullis (1827-1893), his wife Mary Elizabeth Ward (1838-1904), and their children Annie and Cyril. Subsequent to this picture, they had another son, Frank E. The family lived in Centralia, WA, where James was Postmaster and a farmer. He also served as a Lt. in the 1885 Indian War.
MosesGroomsTullis.jpg About 1875 Moses Grooms Tullis (1805-1879) and his wife Mary Summerset (1803-1880). Moses Grooms was a son of Amos Langdon Tullis and Elizabeth, and a grandson of Moses Tullis and Mary Elizabeth Van Dyke. The children of Moses Grooms and Mary included James Wesley, Rebecca Ann, John S., Thomas Summerset, Isaac, Nancy Elizabeth, William Henry, Sarah Catherine, George Maley, Amos Langdon, and Mary Ann. Moses Grooms and Mary lived in Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa.
AnnieTullis.jpg About 1882 Annie Tullis (1864-1885), daughter of James Tullis and Mary Elizabeth Ward, was born and died in Centralia, Lewis Co, WA. She married Peter Church and had one child, Carrie.

About 1888 Alexander Tullis, (1819--1891), eldest son of William Tullis and Janet Fitchie, born in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. Moved to Preston, Lancs. England in 1835 with his mother and siblings. He became the senior partner in the building contracting business of Cooper & Tullis with his brother James. The company built many of the prominent buildings in Preston. (See Preston a Century Ago by Stephen Sartin, extracted from a survey of the Industries of Lancashire 1888--1889.) He married twice, first to Isabella Watson (1829--1850) and then to Ann Ashton (1831-- 1876). They had nine children, two dying in infancy. About 1888 David Tullis (1822--1902), second son of William Tullis and Janet Fitchie, born in Cupar, Fife, Scotland. He joined his brothers in Preston in 1835, becoming an apprenticed stonemason. In the years ahead he first worked with his brother Alexander at Cooper and Tullis; later he formed his own contracting company with his eldest son William (1848--1902) and later his second son Alexander (1854--1924). They constructed many of the fine buildings in Preston. At his death the company was engaged in the construction of the County Sessions House. About 1888 James Tullis (1824 - 1901) was born in Cupar, Fife, Scotland, and moved to Preston with the rest of the Tullis family following the death of their father, William Tullis, in 1835. In 1845, when the firm of Cooper & Tullis was formed, he became a partner in the firm along with his older brother, Alexander. A quote from the newspaper of his death is as follows: "The work done by the firm of Cooper & Tullis was marked by the thoroughness and finish. We need only to point to such buildings as Whittingham Asylum, the new buildings at Stonyhurst (School), Preston Town Hall, Fulwood Barracks, the well-known Parish Church of Bolton, and, above all, to the Harris Free Library and Museum, to show something of the solidity and sound workmanship displayed by the firm". Also in the newspaper report it states; "in private life he was helpful and generous to a fault, in the old-fashioned way, however, for it was his habit to give largely in such a way that no one should know".  Thanks to Derek Wrathall (DWrathall@Totalise.co.uk) for providing this photo and information.
JamesTullis.jpg About 1890 James Tullis (1827-1893) was born in Carthage, Rush Co, Indiana, on December 19, 1827, a son of Isaac Tullis and Ary Odle. James went west by wagon in 1850 with his brothers John and Amos. He became the Postmaster in Centerville, WA Territory, in 1867. James served as a Lt. in the 1885 Indian War in Washington Territory. He married Mary Elizabeth Ward (1838-1904) and had children Annie, Cyril, and Frank. Thomas Jefferson was the son of James Moses Tullis and Sarah Ann Smith, and the grandson of Moses Tullis and Mariah H. Maddox. The family lived in Bienville, LA. See later photo of the family below.

Sarah Ann Smith Tullis (born 22 Oct 1844 in Muscogee Co, GA; died 17 Jan 1899 in Jamestown, LA), wife of James Moses Tullis (1842-1880) and mother of Thomas Jefferson Tullis, John Moses Bailington Tullis, William Newell Tullis, James Philemon Tullis, Cornelia F. About 1904 William Tullis (1856--1933), eldest son of Alexander Tullis and Ann Ashton with his 2nd wife Margaret Bulkeley (1864--1940) and the first three of five children, (L--R) Alexander (1900--1969), Janet (b. 1904) and Mary (1901--1941). His first wife Ann Kendall (1858--1889) bore him two children who survived to adulthood, Douglas (b. 1886) and Leah (1888). Alexander Tullis (1854-1924), son of David Tullis (1822--1902), was the second son in the company of David Tullis & Sons of Preston, Lancashire, England. In 1904 he became the President of the Preston Master Builder's Association, which later became the Preston & District Building Trades Employer's Association, following in the footsteps of his uncle, Alexander Tullis Sr. (1819-1891), who was the first President in 1890 when the Association was founded. The eldest son of David Tullis, William, served on the committee of the Association from its inception in 1890 to his death in 1902, whereas Alexander Jr. only appears in the minute books from 1897 to 1905.  Thanks to Derek Wrathall (DWrathall@Totalise.co.uk) for providing this photo and information.

Annie B Tullous About 1906 Annie B. Tullous (born October 29, 1890, and died Feb. 19, 1992), a descendant of Claudius Tullos. Her father was Anslum Tullous, born 6-4-1840 in Mississippi (son of A. Willoughby Tullous and Lucinda Van Zandt). Her mother was Martha Merchant, daughter of William Columbus Merchant and Belinda Smith. Annie B. Tullous married Andrew Spiller in Robertson County, Texas, October 27, 1907.

Joshua Leonard was a son of Leonard Benjamin Gurley Tullis (1836-1864) who died at Andersonville Prison as a prisoner of the Confederates during the Civil War. He is buried there. Joshua Leonard was a grandson of Corbin Tullis and Frances Roebuck of Mercer Co, Ohio.

L-R: William Davis Tullis, Millard Carey Tullis, John Calvin, Frances Mae Tullis (married William Scott), Francis Emma, Maggie Allene Tullis (married John Otis Banks), and Walter Lawton (probably a relative of John Calvin's, since his mother was a Lawton). John Calvin was a son of John M. Tullis and Sarah Jane Lawton, grandson of John Blalock Tullis and Sabra Key Martin, and great-grandson of Moses Tullis and Polly Blalock. Their older children, not pictured, included Minnie Lee (married Benjamin Franklin McKittrick), John Albert, Essie Quailer (married George Edgar Albea), Vertie Naomi (married Thomas Robert Goldman), Theodore Octavius, and Grover Cleveland. Photo taken about 1915 in Lincoln County, GA. The descendants of this family have an annual Tullis Family Reunion every October in Lincolnton, GA.

James was the son of William Newell Tullis and Ella Ann Norris, and the grandson of James Moses Tullis and Sarah Ann Smith. They lived in Bienville and Caddo, LA. Children: Lorene Clyde, James Clyde, and Francis Newell.
David Ronald TULLIS About 1918 David Ronald Tullis (born 24 Sep 1899 in Partick Glasgow Scotland; died 16 May 1964 in St Brelade JSY CHI), son of David Keil Tullis. Occupation: Metallurgist. About 1920 Thomas Brazilia Tullis (1888 - 1970) was born in Jamestown, Louisiana, the eldest child of Thomas Jefferson Tullis and Lillian Evans. He married Rena Elmira Wiggins on March 24, 1907, and they had seven children.  Thanks to Gary Tullis (gtullis@bellsouth.net) for this photo of his great-grandfather.

David Keil TULLIS About 1938 David Keil Tullis (born 26 Dec 1866 in Calton Glasgow Scotland; died 2 May 1942 in Colintraive Scotland), son of John Keil TULLIS and Elizabeth Crawford YOUNG.
