Tucker Brown founded in 1906 by Andrew Bigmore, Stanley Tucker, Joe Cole and George Brown.Their original idea was to look after the yachting requirements of an increasing number of wealthy yacht owners who were spending their leisure time sailing in Burnham. They bought the freehold of a piece of land on the riverfront, together with what had previously been a store building for builders Ted and Charles Read.
The business restricted itself at first to providing moorings and winter storage for their yachtsmen clients. The first World War saw the business survive as only a skeleton but the former service was resumed after the war ended.
In the 1930s, Tucker Brown aquired neighbouring boat builder J. King and Co and the business developed to encompass boatbuilding.
Another war intervened, World War 2. Storage was provided, as required by their clients, and the boat building output was turned to admiralty work ie lifeboats, whalers etc.
Business returned to normal after the war and continued to flourish under the care of Bob and Sonny Cole, the sons of co founder Joe Cole. Wooden boats, of various sizes, including 32 of the very successful Stella Boats, were built by Tucker Browns craftsmen. Many are still sailing today.
The 1960s saw the rise in popularity of fibreglass boats. These could be made by anyone with a suitable factory. The skills of craftsman boat builders were not in such demand as a result. Tucker Browns found their skills were being used only to finish boats made in factories elsewhere.
In 1980 the business was sold. In the short term, it continued to be involved with servicing the requirements of yachtsmen but very soon much of the former Tucker Brown site was redeveloped for housing. The old office area, closest to the river, and the stores behind, now house the local Museum.

March 1941 Bob was serving in the Royal Navy. His ship was on mine patrol spotting in the River Humber. The boat hit a mine. Bob was one of two survivors. They were rescued only after having spent two hours in the cold water. He was invalidated out of the navy 11 months later. He returned to Burnham and became involved in Tucker Browns war effort.
