Beneficiaries – Elizabeth Horsington (intended spouse), Sarah Hamblyn sister - £50,

Property  owned in Bradpole, Bridport, Bothenhampton, Walditch (PROB11/966) and other places in Dorset. Lands  “given in xxxx by and under the last will of my late dead Father and otherwise subject only to such change in my lands in Walditch as in my dead fathers will mentioned”. There is also mention of a marriage settlement.

Looks as if creditors George Tucker and revd Henry Sherive were creditors and got to will first.

Will of Catherine Tucker 1761-1841 Spinster of Bridport , Dorset 22 October 1842 PROB 11/1970

spinster, daughter of John Tucker and Catherine Northover.

 

Bequeaved to nephew William Cleeves Tucker all monies and securities in trust to be divided into three equal shares after debts and expenses. One share to brother Thomas, or if deceased to niece Catherine, daughter of Thomas. One share to nephew John Chilcott and Sarah Robert Chick son and daughter of late sister Ann Chilcott to share and share alike. One share unto nieces, daughters of late brother Richard Tucker, Harriet, Susan, Sarah, Anna and Frances to share and share alike. Household furniture to John chilcott and Sarah Robert Chick to be equally divided at the direction of SR Chick. I also give to niece *Mary Stanley a mourning ring with initials on it of A T ?. William cleeves Tucker appointed executor.

The will states that in 1834 Thomas disposed of his land and house to his son John for an annuity of £80 year. Catherina was to receive an annuity of £25 a year. Martha was already provided for by her own lands.

Second of wife of  above Thomas Tucker, South St.(son of John and Catherine)

 

Financial matters had been settled by marriage settlement. A ring for niece Ann Burrough to remember her by. Other assets divided between nieces Elizabeth Barkhouse of wells and Martha wife of revd. xxxx Thomas.

Executors Richard and Thomas Tucker the brothers and Ann Chilcott, sister.

Sisters -  Catherine and Ann Chilcott widow of Robert. (late brother)

Also - Stephan Whetham married late brother John’s older daughter Jane or  Jenny.

Josiah Vowler married late brother John’s younger daughter.

Nieces and nephews -  sons and daughters of late brother Abraham - Thomas John alias Thomas John, Anna, Marianne? Emily. (They were in Tuckenhay)

 

Assetts  - Estate named Abbotts Hill in xxxxxxxx in county of Somerset held by a lease granted by Right Honourable? Earl Poulett for her lifetime (left to Mary, wife). Some sort of interest in Netherbury involving Mr George Hart. Property at Eype. Annuity of £40 to Isaac and Catherine. Bequests to rest of family as mentioned above.

Will of Richard Tucker the elder  (1756 – 1837) of Bridport PROB 1875

 

Executors -  Richard Tucker and William Cleeves Tucker, sons and William Pearce              

Stanley of the City of Exeter, a Commander in His Majesty’s Navy. Married to daughter Mary.

Sons  - Richard and William Cleeves (George and Henry had died by then)

Daughters – Harriet, Susan, Sarah, Eliza, Anna, Frances and Mary wife of William

Pearce Stanley

 

Assetts       He mentions his lands, messauges, mills, tenements and herediments.  He mentions a house in Tuckenhay, “now in the occupation of my son Richard Tucker and others” and a share in the Bay Horse used in connection with his trade in Tuckenhay. The house in Tuckenhay, his wearing apparal, the share in the Horse, furniture,etc were to be divided between Richard and William Cleeves. Eight of the children, ie all except Mary, were to receive £200 each. The residue of the estate was to be divided between all of the children including Mary. It is not clear whether any of the lands, messauges, mills, etc were in Bridport. It is known that Richard Tucker  tradde and /or manufacturde for a while in Tuckenha,y as well as Bridport and Southwark.

Wife of John Tucker son of John and Catherine.  Maiden name Golding.

 

Daughters - Jenny Whetham wife of Stephan Whetham; Elizabeth dau. late wife of Josiah Vowler Selwood

 

Sister  - Sarah wife of Wm. Downing Pitcher (Sarah Hunsell m Wm Downing Pitcher 1796 Merriott)

Executors – B-in-law George Tucker of Bridport gentleman  and nephew John Chilcott of Bridport, twine manufacturer.

 

Assets – gives the use but not the disposing power all her linen, plate, china and glass and all other household goods and furniture to Stephen Whetham and Jenny  his wife. After their decease gives and bequeaths it equally amongst their children.. Also gives to Jenny all her wearing apparal . To the children of Josiah Vowler selwood by his late wife Elizabeth gives £100 to be equally divided for when they are 21. Money etc. to be collected, debts and funeral paid then put into government stock to provide a weekly payment for sister Sarah Pitcher  and for Susanna Hounsell of Bridport. Residue to be kept in trust for Josiah and Elizabeths children.

Executors William Swatridge and William Swayne the younger(William’s daughter Mary married a John Swatbridge)

Wife Sarah second wife, first wife and mother of children Mary Whetham daughter of Stephan Whetham and Jane or Jenny Tucker)

Children mentioned as a group, none named.

 

Assets   none specified. Estate to be sold and converted to money for use of wife and children. Wife asked to treat children as her own.

There is a will for Richard 1802 but I have not been able to get it. Probably at Dorset Record Office. Is not at the PRO.

 

I also have the will of Elizabeth Buncombe nee Budden, mother of Richard 1802’s wife Jane Draper Buncombe. Jane received a legacy.

 

 

The next three Tuckers are of Bridport but tenuously related.

 

They have a large family of descendants in Canada for whom I  researched fairly extensively but, although I found  a family connection with us through the Ewens family, I could not connect our Tucker families. This does not mean that they are not related, simply I could not find the connection. I have several pages of research re this family.
