Hi Sue, Jane Whetham md Henry Denziloe and our line comes through their dau Mary who md a Welshman John Jenkins. I have researched Jane`s ancestry back to Hugh Golding 1709. But I am interested in your line and where you fit in which you obviously do. Do you have a father for Stephen Whetham b. 1780 Netherbury? I will send you my line shortly. Thanks for replying.

i Find it so exciting to find living relatives.

Keren.

Anglesey (Angleseyville)

Dateline 1875

A chapelry. in the parish and incorporation of Alverstoke, Southern division of the county, and county court district of Portsmouth, is a beautiful village of modern date, commanding extensive views of the Isle of Wight, Spithead, and the Motherbank. The earliest building, Uxbridge House, was erected in 1826, the first stone having been laid by the Marquis of Anglesey. St. Mark's chapel is in the Elizabethan style, and was opened in the year 1844: it is a brick building, with stone dressings. There is a large hotel with assembly room; also another building containing reading room and baths, with pleasure gardens attached. The situation is elevated, and the surrounding scenery commands universal admiration for its beauty and great variety. The Gosport terminus of the South Western railway is about 2 miles north. The Gosport Road station of the South Western railway is about 1 mile north, and Stokes Bay station and free pier on the same railway are contiguous to the village, and i» the shortest route for the Isle of Wight. Forts Gilkicker and Monckton are also contiguous.

"the Sheriffs Elect - Mr whetham is the son of the late Mr Stephen Whetham, of the well known firm of S.Whetham and Sons, flax and hemp manufacturere, of Brdiport, of which he is now the senior partner. The father of the Sheriff elect married Miss Jenny Tucker, a daughter of the gentleman by whom the works were previously conducted. Their son Charles was born on the 23rd May 1812, and after receiving his education at the Rev. Matthew Austin's Grammer School, in his native town, came early in life to the metropolis to win his way, as so many who have distinguished themselves as merchants ans men of business have done before him. He married the only daughter of the late Mr George Langley, and is father of a large and united family. His career, it is understood, has been fortunate and prosperous, mainly the result too of ability, great industry and strict integrity, evinced in all the relations of life. Mr charles whetham has for many years been a Justice of the Peace, as were his father and elder brother and is aslo a Deputy Lieutenant of London. In 1842 he was elected a member of the court of Common Council for the ward of Bridge; subsequently he was chosen deputy of the ward; and on the death of the late Sir Joseph Causton, then alderman of the ward, he was invited to assume the aldermanic gown, and consenting to do so, he was unanimously elected alderman of the ward by those who best knew his qualities as an indepnedant, upright citizen and an honourable man of business. Mr Alderman Whethem has long been a liveryman of the Leathersellers Company and a few days since was appointed master of that corporation. In addition to the business of his private firm, both at Bridport and in London, he has found time and telent to render good service to various undertakings of a m ore public nature, being deputy chairman of the National Providnet Institution, and chairman of some other important companies in the city. In whatever duties he has been called upon to share, he has been found ready and able to take a dcided and active part, and we cannot do otherwise than congratulate him, and those who have elected him to the shrievalty on the further step in a well earnt position.".

"Short story about the Home Guard (source unknown)

Major William Townley Whetham of 67 Victoria Grove, Bridport, the pre-war commander of the Bridport Rifles, formed a Town Guard. The determined septuagenarian found other old soldiers who were beyond call-up age and launched an

appeal for funds to buy rifles. Calling themselves the Bridport Company they later opened the ranks to younger non-military volunteers and became ‘a broader civil defence corps that could respond to any emergency.’ Captain J. Suttill and

Second-Lieutenant F.W. Knight were its principal officers.

There were moments of hilarity. One band of coast watchers at Seatown went to sleep on the job and were put to shame by having their fish dinner stolen from under their noses. Constant rumours of U- boats surreptitiously slipping into the inhospitable shore around Lyme Regis for supplies, all proved groundles,s but in the process wasted much police time. The only alleged traitor caught on the cliffside turned out to be a fossil collector. Similar false alarms came from the watch ships in Lyme Bay which kept an eye on the shore as well as shipping movements in the English Channel. Their sighting of someone at Eype who was signalling to U-boats in Morse code was found to be a lady ‘arranging her tresses before retiring to bed, oblivious of the fact that she had not drawn the blind.’

A harmless crippled man attracted suspicion after making his home in the empty Coastguard Station at Burton Bradstock. One evening he was being kept under police surveillance when a military unit was alerted to something strange going on. They sealed off the coast road and arrested cyclists and pedestrians passing through the village. Among their catch was the police sergeant from Bridport who headed eastwards when he received a secret message that his constable from Burton Bradstock was missing. On his own initiative the man had decided to keep watch upon the disabled man in the Coastguard Station and had himself been observed hiding in the bushes. He was then watched by soldiers. When Sergeant Frank Bishop peddled towards him they closed the net. The muddle was not resolved — and the policemen and other suspects released — until two o’clock in the morning. ".
