Bob Quigley, did what most of us wanted to do, took a snooze, I was really bushed by this point of our trip. |
I believe this is a church that George Gallagher pointed out that has some American military men buried in. |
Penrhyn Castle Sunday, May 14th, 2006
I wont be doing a lot of commentary, as we were not allowed to take pictures inside. But I will say that this place had the LARGEST Flower Bush I have ever seen. Note in one of the pictures some of the WGS members behind it on the side walk it will give you a perspective of how large this bush was!!
This enormous neo-Norman castle sits between Snowdonia and the Menai Strait. Built by Thomas Hopper between 1820 and 1845 for the wealthy Pennant family, who made their fortune from Jamaican sugar and Welsh slate, the castle is crammed with fascinating things such as a 1-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria. Hopper also designed its interior with elaborate carvings, plasterwork and mock-Norman furniture. The castle contains an outstanding collection of paintings. The Victorian kitchen and other servants' rooms, including scullery, larders and chef's sitting room, have been restored to reveal the preparations for the banquet for the Prince of Wales' visit in 1894. The stable block houses an industrial railway museum, a model railway museum and a superb dolls' museum displaying a large collection of 19th- and 20th-century dolls. The 18.2 hectares (45 acres) of grounds include parkland, an extensive exotic tree and shrub collection and a Victorian walled garden.
