Mayor Phillip was nice enough to arrange lunch for all the members who would be staying in hotels/cottages and would not have hosts. As there was not time for him to cook with picking us up at the airport he made arrangements to host lunch at the Picadilly Inn. Thank you Mayor Phillip! |

Caerwys Primary School
Ysgol Yr Esgob Voluntary Aided Primary School asked the WGS to come and speak to the children. We elected to not only visit with the children but also to bring them things from America. Most brought books about their state that would interest primary aged school children, others brought Lincoln pennies, or Chocolates from Hershey, etc. The Students were wonderful and enjoyed our visit as much as we did.
The Primary School has a grade range from R - Y6. When we questioned Tony Allen, the Head Master about the grade range of the children he answered in an age range, instead of year range as we do. I have found that the Primary school uses a common system of numbering year groups from the start of compulsory schooling to 18 years of age.
The term "R" or Reception refers to the year group of pupils in a primary school who attain the age of 5 during the academic year, where we use the term Kindergarden. Year 1 refers to the group of pupils who attain the age of 6 during the academic year and so on. Year 13 is the year students who attain the age of 18 during the academic year finish schooling. The Primary school we visited with in Caerwys handles children from R [Reception] through Y6, which are children aged 5 through age 10-11. Then they move on to the Secondary phase, which is Y7 [aged 11-12] - Y13 [aged 17-18]. If I remember correctly, Tony said when they leave the Primary school to go to secondary school they have a choice whether to attend a totally Welsh speaking school or a English speaking school.
I found this information on an inspection report via the internet about the school. Ysgol Yr Esgob Voluntary Aided Primary School is situated in the town of Caerwys, which is between Mold and Denbigh. The school served the town, and a small percentage of the school population comes from the surrounding semi-rural area. Most children are admitted to the school in the September following their third birthday. During the inspection, there were 7 children admitted in September attending the nursery class part-time and a further 3 children who were admitted after their third birthday in the spring term and attend under the Early Entitlement Scheme. There were 70 pupils in full-time education. English is the day-to-day language of the school and the main medium for teaching and learning. Ninety seven percent of pupils come from homes where English is the first language. Three percent are learning English as an additional language, which is low. These pupils come from an Indian heritage and speak Marathi as their first language. Welsh is taught as an additional language. I used a translator to find out what Ysgol Yr Esgob means and it gave me "School He Drives Bishop", what I found from the inspection report is that the school is a non-denominational school.
